Father Ed Broom gives a retreat talk on what St. Ignatius calls Holy Indifference. When we understand why we are here… why we were created, we have the freedom to live the life God wants us to live. Holy Indifference helps us to order the disorder in our lives and to be totally open to God’;s love.

“Holy indifference is of the nature of pure love which directs the will to that which is most perfect and destroys every obstacle.”

–St. Vincent de Paul

God summoned Jonah to go to a place he did not want to go, to visit a people he did not particularly like, and to give a message he literally detested—all this to the pagan city of Nineveh! Jonah’s response to God’s call? A flat and unequivocal “No!” “I will not go!” Do we have the Jonah Complex? Send someone else, Lord. Send me later, Lord. I’ll do it my way, Lord.

Father Broom continues his topic of priestly vocations. God does not have laryngitis! He is calling men to the priesthood but many do not hear – some hear but do not answer. What are the obstacles? Materialism, fear of commitment, and family objections are a few of the obstacles. We must pray for all priests and for those whom God has called and haven’t answered yet.

Mary has promised us many blessings when we are wrapped in her armor – the Brown Scapular. Our Lady of Mount Carmel gave this powerful sacramental to Carmelite St. Simon Stock. To this day every Carmelite in covered by Mary’s Scapular. Father Broom explains her promises and gives many examples of the miracles gained by her intercession for those who are enrolled in her Scapular and wear it. Her protection will never fail us!
