Speaking of the paralytic that Jesus heals in the Gospel, Father Ed Broom says that first and foremost in our spiritual life we have to recognize we are all paralytics. The paralyzed man on the mat is Fr. Broom – and it is you. We have to admit that. That is original sin – that is personal sin! So the best seller in the 60’s “I’m OK – You’re OK” is wrong. I’m not OK and you’re not OK! Unless we recognize we’re sinners, we will not turn to the Divine Physician for healing! What is the first thing Jesus does with the paralytic? He says, “Your sins are forgiven.” Then He says, “Take up your mat and walk.” Jesus heals the soul, then He heals the body. We have to ask ourselves, where are our priorities? What is more important to us, our body or our immortal soul! The answer to that question will determine our eternal destiny!
Father Ed Broom, OMV, serves as Associate Pastor at St. Peter Chanel Church in Hawaiian Gardens, California. He is a member of the Religious Order, Oblates of the Virgin Mary, and was ordained by Saint John Paul II in St Peter’s Basilica on May 25, 1986. Fr. Ed is a Retreat Master and teaches Catholic Ignatian Marian Spirituality through articles, podcasts, a radio show, retreats and spiritual direction. He is the author of three books: From Humdrum to Holy, Total. Consecration to Jesus through Mary though the Mysteries of the Rosary and Road Map to Heaven, A Catholic Plan of Life.
