God summoned Jonah to go to a place he did not want to go, to visit a people he did not particularly like, and to give a message he literally detested—all this to the pagan city of Nineveh! Jonah’s response to God’s call? A flat and unequivocal “No!” “I will not go!” Do we have the Jonah Complex? Send someone else, Lord. Send me later, Lord. I’ll do it my way, Lord.

PRIESTLY VOCATIONS, WHAT ARE THE OBSTACLES TO HEARING GOD’S CALL?

Father Broom continues his topic of priestly vocations. God does not have laryngitis! He is calling men to the priesthood but many do not hear – some hear but do not answer. What are the obstacles? Materialism, fear of commitment, and family objections are a few of the obstacles. We must pray for all priests and for those whom God has called and haven’t answered yet.

Mary has promised us many blessings when we are wrapped in her armor – the Brown Scapular. Our Lady of Mount Carmel gave this powerful sacramental to Carmelite St. Simon Stock. To this day every Carmelite in covered by Mary’s Scapular. Father Broom explains her promises and gives many examples of the miracles gained by her intercession for those who are enrolled in her Scapular and wear it. Her protection will never fail us!

PRIESTLY VOCATIONS , GOD IS CALLING MEN TO THE PRIESTHOOD

Father Broom in his Friday Evening Perseverance Group explains the call to the Priesthood. Every vocation story is unique…. and often men are called to the priesthood by the heroic example of other priests. The young actor/scholar/poet, Karol Wojtyla was called to the priesthood by the heroic example of St. Father Maximilian Kolbe.

We have a role in encouraging our sons, grandsons and other men we know to consider God’s call to the holy priesthood.

Father Broom presents the fruits of a deep prayer life as written by St. Peter of Alcantara… a Franciscan priest who was a spiritual director of St. Teresa of Avila. She is the Doctor of Prayer…..if he could direct the greatest authority in history on prayer…. surely we could use his insights
