The Gospel passage is about the Rich Young Man. Jesus looked at him with love and said you are lacking only one thing. “Go sell all you have and give to the poor, then come follow Me.” And the rich young man went away sad. Father Ed Broom begins his homily with an endearing story of a little boy who in 1938 rode his bike 5 miles to serve as an altar boy and then 5 miles back home, in freezing weather – 10 degrees weather or even colder. Father Ed goes on to talk about the rich young man in today’s Gospel passage.  Obviously this is a call to vocation. The rich young man was good, very good, but not good enough for Jesus Christ – that’s the problem. Giving a brief historical overview, Father Ed asks this question, why don’t we have more vocations today? He goes on to give three significant and insightful reasons why we have a drought in vocations, and ends with why we should be concerned about it!

Jesus said, “Whoever would be first must be last and the servant of all.” Father Ed Broom illuminates the virtue of humility by presenting three incredible manifestations of the humility of Christ: Christ in His Incarnation; Christ in His Passion and Death on the cross; Christ’s Presence until the end of time in the Church, His Mystical Body and especially in Holy Communion which truly is the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ! Father Ed then gives us three ways we can grow in humility in imitation of Jesus and Mary. Humility is recognition of the truth! We grow in humility by praying, which acknowledges the supremacy of the Creator over the creature. We grow in humility through humiliations. We grow in humility through devotion to Mary: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done unto me according to your word.” Let us grow in humility by listening to this inspirational homily by Father Ed.

Father Ed Broom talks about how faith saves us! The disciples in today’s Gospel could not drive the demon out of a boy. Seeing Jesus, the boy’s father beseeches Him, “If you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.” Jesus repeats, “If you can!” Then Jesus says, “Everything is possible for one who believes!” Immediately the boy’s father exclaims, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” That could be our prayer! “Lord, I believe, help my unbelief!” Prayer strengthens our faith. Praying is an act of faith! Father Ed  goes on to explain three ways we can grow in faith. 1) Thankfulness; 2) Praying well; 3) Trials!
