Father Broom preaches on the Gospel of John 1:35-42.

St. John the Baptist is forming the soon to be Apostles. They are prepared by him to recognize Jesus and as soon as he points Him out, they follow Jesus…. come and see, Jesus says. St. John the Evangelist notes the exact hour of meeting Jesus. There is an enthusiasm in these new followers. They immediately bring others to Jesus. They have found a great treasure – the Messiah – and they spread the word with fervor.

Jesus calls… they say “YES” and they are filled with joy. They leave everything to follow Jesus. Nothing holds them back. What is holding us back from accepting His call… what are we unwilling to let go of? Peter dropped his nets and followed and was filled with joy.

Let’s focus on Jesus…see where He lives, see how He lives, walk with Him
on the path of eternal joy.

Father Broom in his Friday evening Perseverance talk gives us an Igantian contemplation: Traveling with the Kings. As the Feast of the Epiphany approaches, we journey from Persia with the Kings…. looking for truth, searching in nature, bringing gifts.

They find Truth in the person of Jesus Christ and they recognize that he is the King of Kings – prostrating themselves in adoration, reverencing Him.
These mighty astronomers, kings from Persia are humble in this manifestation of the One true God present in the babe in Mary’s arms.

“Wise men still seek Him in the arms of Mary”

ST. ELIZABETH ANN SETON | AMERICAN SAINT

Who is the 1st American born Saint? Who founded the first American Catholic parish school? Who founded the first Catholic orphanage in America? Who founded the first religious community of women in the United States? Who was a spouse, a parent, and religious sister and a foundress? And who did all of this before dying at the age of 46? Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton! Mother Seton!

She was born an Episcopalian and a member of a very well to do New York family. By the good example of others, her discovery of the truth of the Holy Eucharist, and the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary she converted to Catholicism at the age of 31. All of those accomplishments were done in fifteen short years. Her conversion caused her to be disowned
by her family and thereby thrown into poverty. She persevered nonetheless.

If we cooperated with God’s graces the way she did, we would all be super saints!

HOLY NAME OF JESUS

Father Broom gives an inspirational homily on January 3rd – the new Feast Day of the Holy Name of Jesus. The official day of recognition may be new but the devotion is not new. St. Paul says that at the Name of Jesus every knee on the earth, below the earth, and above the earth must bend. St. Bernardine of Siena spread devotion to the Holy Name far and wide. St. Ignatius promoted reverence for this Name by the name of his community and by its famous symbol which is posted here.

The reverential speaking of the Name of Jesus is a prayer in itself.

Father Broom preaches on the Feast Day of St. Basil the Great and St. Gregory Nazianzen – Both Doctors of the Eastern Church and best friends.
These men – with completely different personalities and temperaments – had a spiritual friendship that helped both of them become Saints.

Father Broom gives the qualities of spiritual friendship and explains how we can lead each other to Heaven. Spiritual friends pray for each other, are humble, are willing to give and receive fraternal correction. Such friends share spiritual treasures, strive to sanctify each other and most of all encourage each other especially in times of desolation.

Basil and Gregory, Francis and Clare, John Bosco and Joseph Cafasso, Francis de Sales and Jane Frances de Chantal, Paul and Timothy, Ignatius and Francis Xavier. Let’s form spiritual friendships for the Love of God, to Become Saints, and to Save Souls!
