Why did our new Holy Father take the name Francis? His friend, Cardinal Hummes, told him before the Papal vote was final: “Don’t forget the poor”.
St. Francis of Assisi embraced the most outcast member of society, the poor, the abandoned, and even the lepers who no one would touch.

Pope Francis chose the name so he would never forget that he was here to serve the poor, and to embrace the lepers of our world. Last year on Holy Thursday he washed the feet of AIDS victims and kissed their feet. He is another St. Francis.
