Father Broom preaches on St. Raymond on his feast day – January 7th. Some saints die young but some live a long time – 100 years for St. Raymond and he used all of those years well for the honor and glory of God.
He was a great scholar and university teacher who entered the Dominicans in his 40s. He had a great desire to preach and teach but the Church called him to work for many years writing a four volume guide for confessors. He wrote the 1st systematic treatise on Canon Law. He compiled and synthesized all the writings of the Popes for the previous 100 years. He wanted to preach but he obeyed. He even was the Provincial General of all the Dominicans an administrative post… still no preaching.
Finally in his 60s he was able to become a preacher and he ws one of the most eloquent and effective preacher of his time. His life, holiness, and preaching led to the conversion of 10,000 Moslems in Spain. He co- founded the religious community of Our Lady of Ransom (Mercedarians) to work to save Christians who had been enslaved by the Moslems.
He was an active productive apostolic worker his entire life. He shows us the value of obedience, developing our intellectual talents, and how to continue to grow in holiness our entire life even if we love to be 100!.
