“LIFTING UP YOUR MIND AND HEART TO GOD!”
This is the definition of prayer written by St. John Damascene in the 7th Century.
Father Broom explains the brilliance and holiness of this great saint. He is known as the Thomas Aquinas of the East and is one of the Eastern Fathers of the Church. He wrote brilliantly on many subjects. His devotion to Mary under the title Mary, Help of Christians, was profound.
He is most famous for his stirring defense of the use of images in the Church… he helped defeat the Iconoclast Heresy. He said we do not worship image but venerate them as a reminder of whom they represent. These images “lift our mind and heart to God” – they help us pray. What a book is to an educated person an image is to anyone who can not read. Catechism could be taught with no books but with just images.
We owe so much to this great saint.
