The conversion of Saint Ignatius of Loyola began when he was almost killed by a cannonball at the Battle of Pamplona. He was helping his countrymen – the Spanish- repel the French invaders. The Spanish lost the battle… he suffered severe wounds in his legs. It was the biggest failure of his life and the most painful and yet that was what God used to start him on the road to holiness.

Our greatest failures, losses, and defeats are sometimes the doorways to becoming a Saint.

What is your “Pamplona” experience? Father Broom helps us to see in his life and ours that God works in mysterious ways to bring His Will alive in our lives. He wills us all to be great Saints and will use whatever means necessary to get our attention.

Father Ed Broom OMV gave this homily on July 31, 2012 – the feast day of St. Ignatius. This was during the annual eight Day Retreat at Sacred Heart Retreat House in Alhambra, California for those who have done the Spiritual Exercises at his parish, St. Peter Chanel in Hawaiian Gardens, Calif.
