Father Broom’s Sunday Homily on November 11, 2012 – Mark 12:38-44 – The Widow’s Mite

The poor widow is remembered and exalted by Jesus Christ for all eternity! God can do great things with small people like us who have small gifts if we have hearts of great generosity. If little people like us have generosity with courage to give all to God like this widow and the widow who met Elijah, God can make us into great Saints! But we must trust in Him…. be not afraid! Give Him everything… hold nothing back! ‘

Father Broom has spoken often about our Pope Benedict’s call for us to live a Year of Faith. He issued that call on October 11, 2011 in his Apostolic Letter, “Porta Fidei”. That document is available here:
http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/benedict_xvi/motu_proprio/documents/hf_ben-xvi_motu-proprio_20111011_porta-fidei_en.html

Father talks today on the practical steps to implement this Year of Faith. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has issued its document on Recommendations for the Year of Faith. Their recommendations are available here:
http://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_con_cfaith_doc_20120106_nota-anno-fede_en.html

Their recommendations are broken down into four categories with ten recommendations each:
1) Universal Church
2) Episcopal Conferences
3) Diocesan
4) Parish

Father Broom today explains the ten recommendations for the Universal Church.

FATHERHOOD

Father Broom talks to a group of fathers at St. Dominic Savio Church in Bellflower, California on November 10, 2012.

Our children are falling into lives of sin, addiction, confusion and even suicide. Many of these young people are fatherless in one way or another. Many fathers are physically absent. Others are emotionally absent. Some have forgotten or never knew what it means to be a good father.

If we are to be good holy fathers, then our fatherhood must follow the example of the Heavenly Father. We must have strength, determination, and purpose yet have the merciful heart of the father in Luke 15 who welcomes home the prodigal son with many gifts.

If we are to be good fathers ourselves then we must be good sons of our Heavenly Father. We must have a growing spiritual life, we must be men of prayer. We must be men of obedience if we want to be obeyed. We must be men of love and mercy if we want to be loved.

If we want to be good shepherds to our sheep, then we must be good sheep of the true Good Shepherd.

TEMPLE OF THE LIVING GOD

Father Broom preaches on the Gospel of John 2:13-22 on the Feast Day of the Dedication of Saint John Lateran. Stop defiling the Temple – Stop making my Father’s House a marketplace. Father explores the many meanings and usages of “temple” in Scripture and in our Faith.

We ourselves are a Temple of the Living God by the grace of our Baptism. Because we are that Temple we must remember the two D’s – our dignity and our destiny. Our dignity as sons and daughters of the living God and our destiny which is Heaven!

LITTLE PEOPLE WITH SMALL GIFTS BUT GREAT HEARTS BECOME GREAT SAINTS

Father Broom speaking to his Friday evening Perseverance Group tells us how even little people with small resources and generous hearts can become great saints. He uses examples from the Bible – the Widow’s Mite, Gideon, and little David against mighty Goliath, and lives of the Saints, St. Therese and Blessed Mother Teresa to show how even the small and insignificant can do great things got God. We might be small people with few talents and resources but with a generous heart we can be great saints!
