San Juan de Letr\u00e1n es la iglesia m\u00e1s antigua del mundo, y recibe por ello el t\u00edtulo de Cabeza y Madre de todas las iglesias. Cuando a comienzos del siglo IV cesaron las persecuciones contra los cristianos, el emperador Constantino cedi\u00f3 al Papa el Palacio de Letr\u00e1n (preexistente a la iglesia), para que fuera su residencia oficial. Letr\u00e1n fue la sede central de la Iglesia Cat\u00f3lica durante m\u00e1s de 1.000 a\u00f1os, hasta que en el siglo XIV los Papas se trasladaron al Vaticano.<\/strong>
