San Juan de Letrán es la iglesia más antigua del mundo, y recibe por ello el título de Cabeza y Madre de todas las iglesias. Cuando a comienzos del siglo IV cesaron las persecuciones contra los cristianos, el emperador Constantino cedió al Papa el Palacio de Letrán (preexistente a la iglesia), para que fuera su residencia oficial. Letrán fue la sede central de la Iglesia Católica durante más de 1.000 años, hasta que en el siglo XIV los Papas se trasladaron al Vaticano.
