CINCO VÍAS PARA CONQUISTAR LA PACIENCIA

“La paciencia es la más heroica de las virtudes, precisamente porque carece de toda apariencia de heroísmo”. La paciencia es una forma de enfrentar al mundo desde la esperanza de la vida eterna; es una de las formas más elevadas de darle su lugar al prójimo y confiar en Dios.

Ninguno de nosotros podría decir que domina perfectamente la virtud de la paciencia. Cuando pensamos que hemos conquistado una victoria mayúscula en la adquisición de paciencia de pronto, tomados por sorpresa, volvemos a explotar y nuestra ilusión se convierte en humo.

La paciencia es importante para la salvación de nuestras almas, y siempre está poniéndose a prueba, incluso con Dios mismo, que nos aparece distante, que no escucha nuestras oraciones o se nos hace que es indiferente a nuestras súplicas.

Por ello, ofrezco cinco vías concretas para que podamos alcanzar la paciencia en nuestra vida de fe:

  1. REZAR. San Ignacio insiste en que debemos pedir la gracia. San Agustín, humildemente, nos recuerda que todos somos mendigos ante Dios. Dios está dispuesto a dar si perseveramos en pedir. Recordemos a la viuda que derrotó al frío corazón del juez por el simple hecho de mantenerse pidiéndole su ayuda. Como en Mateo (7:7), hay que tener presente que si pedimos recibiremos; si buscamos, encontraremos y si tocamos a la puerta, se nos abrirá.
  2. LA VIDA DE JESUS. Él el camino, la verdad y la vida y nadie va al Padre si no es a través de Él. Hay un refrán muy popular que señala lo siguiente: “Dime con quién andas y te diré quién eres”. Si ocupamos tiempo meditando sobre el Evangelio, las palabras, los gestos y las acciones de Jesús, será como encender una luz en nosotros. Vamos a empezar a imitar más y más a Jesús, sobre todo en la virtud de la paciencia.
  3. LA PASION DE CRISTO. Muchos santos han tenido un magnetismo particular en la Pasión, llevando a sus corazones la meditación sobre la más grande historia de amor del mundo. “No hay amor más grande que aquel de quien da la vida por sus amigos”. Una meditación constante de la Pasión, el sufrimiento, la crucifixión y la muerte de Jesús, puede llegar a ser una fuente infinita de bendiciones y la clave para abrir la puerta de la paciencia a los corazones más endurecidos.
  4. JUICIOS Y OPORTUNIDADES. Cuando los juicios descienden sobre nosotros como un torrencial diluvio, llevemos a la mente algún elemento de la Pasión de Cristo, ya sea de los Evangelios o de obras como las de Anne Catherine Emmerick. El juicio, entonces, será visto en una más universal y supra natural prospectiva. El juicio sobre mí es doloroso, pero comparado a Jesucristo es una bagatela. También es que sufro por mis pecados y por mi pasado pecaminoso, pero Jesús sufrió siendo la epítome de la inocencia.
  5. MARIA, NUESTRA SEÑORA DE LOS DOLORES. El filme de Mel Gibson pone a María a lo largo de todo el curso de la Pasión de Cristo. Solamente detrás del sufrimiento de su hijo está el de su madre. Lo acompañó al Calvario y estuvo de pie ante la cruz, haciendo de la paciencia una virtud heroica. De hecho, practicó la paciencia toda su vida: en la huida a Egipto, buscando tres días a su hijo, perdiendo a su bien amado esposo, al pie de la cruz de su Hijo… Cuando nuestra paciencia sea puesta a prueba, volvamos los ojos, la mente y el corazón a Nuestra Señora, y ella nos hará conquistar la virtud heroica que necesitamos.

Ciertamente, como alguna vez dijo Giacomo Leopardi (1798-1837), “La paciencia es la más heroica de las virtudes, precisamente porque carece de toda apariencia de heroísmo”. Y de eso se trata el seguimiento a Jesús: de ir a contracorriente de la apariencia.

El padre Ed Broom, OMV (Oblato de la Virgen María), conocido también como Padre Escobita, fue ordenado sacerdote por san Juan Pablo II en 1986. Es asistente del párroco en la Iglesia de San Pedro Chanel en Hawaiian Gardens (California). Allí imparte retiros, da los Ejercicios Espirituales de San Ignacio de Loyola, organiza y dirige su propio programa de radio y televisión en Guadalupe Radio –Barriendo Conciencias.
