unit? These are just two of the unusual sexual fantasies social
media users have confessed to trying.
A hilarious Reddit thread, named ‘what is a sexual fantasy you do
not recommend’, features the bizarre sexcapades of commenters
— many of who bitterly regret their risqué acts.
The thread began with a question from user u/Fantastic-Ant-4429, who asked:
‘What is a sexual fantasy you do not recommend fulfilling?’
Having sex in the desert, a library and on a plane were some of
the most upvoted responses, Huffpost reported.
Reddit user u/ElPresidente714 admitted to trying to have sex in the desert at night when coming back from Vegas.
But in reality, they were met with ‘creepy crawly desert things don’t sleep at night’.
Another, u/DonSmitty said a ‘buddy in high school’ covered his girlfriend (including her genitals) in chocolate syrup.
But it didn’t end well — she got infected with a ‘crazy’ yeast infection.
Doing it in a storage unit was another unusual fantasy which ended
badly. User u/isthisfark wrote: ‘There’s a closing time and if you miss it you’ll get stuck behind the gates
for the night. Then the people who live there start rustling.’
Not everyone pursues or even plans to act on their sexual
fantasies in real life. But a handful of those who have tried to
make their browser history a reality have confessed they didn’t quite go to plan — a
thread on Reddit revealed

Another user u/odysseus-23, warned against trying to have
sex in a library due to the likelihood of getting ‘caught
on the cameras’.
And while joining the Mile High Club — engaging in sex acts while aboard an airplane — might sound exciting, some warn that it is anything but.
‘Mile high club. Trust me, these bathrooms are getting smaller
and smaller. And people notice, they always notice,’ u/bigindianenergy29
commented.
Some people came to the conclusion that the bed is the best location. u/Mundane-Garbage1003 wrote:

All six senior members of the new federal anti-corruption watchdog
have accepted Qantas Chairman’s Lounge memberships as

Gift disclosure logs for the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) leadership positions show commissioners are all part of Australia’s ‘most exclusive club’ the Chairman’s Lounge membership extended by invite only by the Qantas
chair.
This has raised concerns over how impartial the body would be when dealing
with Qantas matters.
If Mr Albanese has requested flight upgrades from former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce directly, as reported in a new book, he may have fallen foul of the strict Ministerial Code
of Conduct which prohibits ministers from seeking ‘any kind of benefit’

An NACC spokesperson confirmed the Commissioner, three deputy

A job ad for the Canberra Qantas Chairman’s Lounge sets out the requirements to serve the high and mighty
Applicants must ‘have experience working in a fine dining environment and the ability to work a seven-
day rotating roster.
The claims Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy when booking Qantas flight by personally requesting them from Mr Joyce are made in a
new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review columnist
Joe Aston.
Aston alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce while in his various parliamentary jobs,
which included Minister for Transport to ask for special upgrades that only the CEO
could dole out for himself or his family.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of
the 22 flights Mr Albanese received upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas
trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu.
The book also revealed that as well as son Nathan having a ‘plus one’ Chairman’s Lounge membership Mr Albanese’s partner Jodie Haydon did as well.
Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that all were ‘declared in the appropriate way’.

Nothing signals the start of winter quite like the return of the
Fair Isle knit. Once considered ‘ugly’ knitwear we’d only pull out from the back

Island in Scotland and uses a traditional knitting technique to create those

Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is at the heart of their reason for entering Parliament in the first place hear themselves?
In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against
proposed electoral reforms that the major parties look set to come together to support.
The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate, caps on the
amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to prevent
the equivalent of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what any party can spend at an election – actually less than the major parties currently spend.
The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations,
thus increasing the transparency of who makes political donations
in the first place.
So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their cash to influence election outcomes – and the extent to
which they can use their wealth at all will be limited.
The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed and frequency that
disclosures of donations need to be made.
At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made – but you
only find out the details of who has given what to whom many
months later, well after elections are won and lost.
In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much greater
transparency and far less big money being injected into campaigning by the wealthy.
Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’ with the policy and warned the reform would ‘not stop the rot’
Greens senate leader Larissa Waters (left) fired a warning shot –
saying if it serves only the major parties ‘it’s a rort, not reform’. Teal independent ACT senator David Pocock (right) said:
‘What seems to be happening is a major-party stitch-up’
Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to $16,000 under the current rules, will need to disclose having done so.
And how much they can donate will be capped.
Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed new
laws, labeling them a ‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not a reform’.
They have lost their collective minds after finding out that
Labor’s proposal just might secure the support of the
opposition.
I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write
this column.
Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency measures stamping out the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or
the corruption-fighting Teals, in a united crossbench effort to drag the
major parties closer to accountability.
More fool me.
The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put forward by Labor
and is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.
It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply, the Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.
Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors such as Clive Palmer
Another potential target of the laws is businessman and Teal funder Simon Holmes à Court
The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations
rules (Greens leader Adam Bandt and Senator Mehreen Faruqi are pictured)
The major parties have long complained about the influence the likes of Simon Holmes à Court
wields behind the scenes amongst the Teals.
And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the
wealthy in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules.
Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are running a mile from reforms that will curtail dark art of political donations.
The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to take effect immediately, by the
way. It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power play before the next election designed to catch the
crossbench out.
They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough time to absorb and understand the changes before
preparing for them.
Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the Coalition. I imagine
the opposition want to go over the laws with a fine tooth comb.
As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to
include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which would create loopholes only the unions are capable
of taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the years to come.
But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get these proposed laws implemented,
the crossbench should offer their support, not cynical opposition, to what is being advocated for.
They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could
be incorporated in the package.
To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false
commentary about being in politics to ‘clean things up’.

The movie studio spent about $200 million to produce
the film and about $100 million on marketing and distribution, according to the report.
It would need to gross about $450 million at the box office
to break even — when factoring in the cut taken by theaters —
though Warner Bros. sources claim the number
is $375 million.
A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report, saying ‘Any estimates suggested by
anonymous «insiders» or «rival executives» are grossly wrong and continues a trend where rumor is reported
as fact.’
‘The film continues to play in theatrical release, included with this week’s
opening in China, and will continue to earn revenue throughout its home viewing and ancillary
run.’
So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has
grossed $51.5 million domestically and $165 million globally after two weeks of release.
In comparison, the first Joker grossed $96.2 million domestically and
$248.4 million globally after three days of release.
The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 billion dollar Oscar-winning

an agent familiar with director Todd Phillips’ process telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during the making
of the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month.
A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy
in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150
[million] worldwide. Not a billion. People showed up because
that guy was Joker.’
In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of
the film does not include a DC Studios logo.
A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end
of the Joker sequel, while Phillips declined to comment to the publication.
Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner- with claims that
Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros. Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.
It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy
rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control
of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.
Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this
is kind of a Warner Bros. movie.’
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia
and Discovery merged in April 2022 and was
‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at a lower price point.’
The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20
per cent less.
A source directly involved with the film recently shared: ‘The one thing about genre stuff:
If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re going to fail’; director Todd Phillips

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget
remaining static.
A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the decision to film in Los Angeles’.
A source directly involved with the film said: ‘No one could get through to Todd.
And the one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are,
you’re going to fail.
Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to
premiere the film at the Venice Film Festival, but Phillips
pushed back – with a Warner spokesman saying the studio
‘fully supported the decision to bring the film to Venice.
Along with Gaga and Phoenix, other stars that had appeared in the sequel include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beatz and Steve
Coogan.

He added: ‘I know I was responsible last time
for talking about it, but it’s difficult to do so.
‘That becomes your obsession because you’re working the
entire time to get to a certain weight.
‘So then you end up talking about it, and then it just sounds
like an actor going on and on about how much weight they lost.
‘By the end of that run I was so sick of myself
and angry at myself for making such a big deal about that
part, because you just do what you’re ****ing supposed
to do. So this time I was like, ‘I’m not going to do that’.’
He then whispered: ‘It was 47 pounds,’ before adding: ‘No,
I’m joking. I don’t know.’
Co star Lady Gaga, who plays a music therapist at Arkham Asylum, said: ‘We rehearsed the waltz
in the film for two months which kind of falls apart.
‘When Joaquin was too hungry we fed him blueberries.’
Phoenix said: ‘Part of the joy for me was to take standards and find a way that was specific to the characters.
‘That was part of what was interesting for us. We started off with references like Frank Sinatra and
Sammy Davis Jr and we started to emulate that sound.’

Gaga said: ‘The way music is used is to give characters a way to express
themselves because the dialogue is not enough.’
She had to forget her professional training: ‘It was about unlearning technique and forgetting how to breathe.’
Director Todd Phillips said that he felt the pressure after the success of The Joker.
He said: ‘I’m more nervous of this one than the first one.
The first one we were under the radar, this one
everyone was writing on the internet about it.’
The Warner Bros film is released on October 4th.
After the release of the first film, Joaquin shut down rumours he only ate an apple a day to achieve his astonishing
weight loss, telling Access Hollywood that he consumed
more food than that — though not much more.
‘It wasn’t an apple a day. No, you’ve also got lettuce and steamed green beans,
‘ he said of what he ate in preparation for the role.
The actor previously admitted that ‘you start to go mad when you lose that amount of weight in that amount of

While speaking with Access Hollywood, Joaquin explained he consulted with a doctor to ensure he lost weight as safely
as possible
Although Joaquin has lost weight for roles before, he admitted that
‘Joker’ director Todd Phillips didn’t make it easy on him.
The Her star recalled how the producer always had the one food item he craved on hand, which made his diet a
bit more of a struggle.
‘Todd did have these f*****g pretzels that I love. And he’d
just have bags of them in his office!’ he said.
‘And that was difficult.’
Joaquin’s character is wearyingly thin in the film, and he
admitted that he had reservations about taking on such a drastic
weight loss.
‘It’s a horrible way to live,’ he told the New York Times.
‘I think [the Joker] should be kind of heavy. Todd was like, ‘I think you should do the
real thin person.»
Joaquin previously said his extreme diet helped him prepare for the role in more ways than one.
‘The first thing for us was the weight loss — I think that’s really what
I started with,’ he said of working with the film’s director.
‘And, as it turns out, that then affects your psychology.

Look at skin tints or moisturisers or foundations with
serum. These are light and don’t sink into wrinkles.
Ruby Hammer MBE, 62, is one of the best-known and respected make-up
artists in the industry
Any woman over 50 needs a decent concealer. It’s
a multipurpose product; skin might be a little crepey around the eyes,
you might have a breakout or you might be a bit more ruddy around
the nose.
A top tip is to use two shades for different areas of the face
— I use a lighter one around my eyes. I love Laura Mercier Secret
Camouflage (£28.35, lookfantastic.com), which is a palette with two colours.
The texture is slightly thicker, which scares people, but
actually if you’ve prepped your skin well, it dabs on and doesn’t
wear off.
For youthful glow and long-lasting vibrancy, I recommend Ruby Hammer Cheek Colour (£24,
rubyhammer.com). Everything loses its bloom with age,
and the complexion can appear a bit dull and grey. I would suggest the red, whatever your skin colour.
You just need a tiny bit — dab onto the apple of your cheek and blend with your fingers.
Build up if you need to — if you’re darker skinned, add more; if you’re fair,
just use a smidgen.
Clarins Lip Oil (£25, clarins.co.uk)
Don’t be scared of red but don’t be heavy-handed.
There are so many lovely lipstick products. Go for a hybrid one that gives comfort for dryer
lips and has a hint of colour. Clarins Lip Oil (£25, clarins.co.uk) has both qualities.
You don’t need a mirror to apply it, just whip it out for a
top-up.
Eyes can look less bright but a really good mascara will
open them up so you look wider awake.
My Mascara & Brow Duo (£28, rubyhammer.com) has a tubular
formula, which means it wraps around lashes, stops smudges and comes off with hot
water. One end tidies the brows and the other is a mascara.
Use one layer for daily running around and then build
up to a couple in the evening.
Either use a primer at the beginning or a setting spray at the end of your make-up.
Try Nanoset from Indeed Labs (£24.99, indeedlabs.com) which you just spray onto the face.
It’s long-lasting, has blurring properties, and gives older faces a bit of a
soft-focus look.
Don’t…feel there are any rules. Enjoy experimenting with looks.

Midlife women hate powders. They can sit in your skin and make it look matte and old, settling in pores
and revealing tiny wrinkles. That’s why I created my bestselling

It’s almost like a filler because of its blurring properties.

I like Lisa Eldridge’s lipsticks, (£27, lisaeldridge.com); she understands makeup and application. These have a velvety texture and last well but aren’t
drying on older lips.
Brows lose definition and hairs so can look sparse. Try Graphite Brow pencil by 19/99 (£22, spacenk.co/uk).
It’s an age-inclusive company, and this gives a soft, natural look.
Use the brush to tidy brows and then fill in with
the pencil at the other end.
Don’t… overdo it. Avoid heavy contouring and keep coverage light and fresh.
Don’t hide and try to conceal wrinkles
Sandy Linter is in her seventies and her clients include Elizabeth Hurley, Christie Brinkley,
Debbie Harry and Cheryl Tiegs. In the ’70s she was part of the Studio 54 crowd and now
her YouTube make-up teach-ins for older women are
legendary.
Sandy says: You need to like what you see in the mirror, whether you age naturally or not.
But don’t hide yourself. There aren’t any make-up rules for older women, but
don’t try to conceal wrinkles, because you’ll just draw attention to them.
Kevyn Aucoin Glass Glow Face (£30, sephora.co.uk) is fabulous.
You have to use it discreetly — a little on cheekbones, a little on lips and a little on the eyelids — but it gives your face a
lovely glow which is what fades as we age. The main thing I’ve noticed
is that your eyelashes get messy, thin and dry. Everyone
uses plumpers, but I’ve never had any success.

NARS Air Matte Blush (£24.30, lookfantastic.com)
The only mascara I recommend is Chanel Volume Mascara (£27.90, boots.com).
It will never disappoint you. And always use black to frame the eyes, which lose definition. It’s a myth that older women can’t use black.
I love NARS Air Matte Blush (£24.30, lookfantastic.com).
I scoop a little out with my finger, rub it on the back
of my hand to melt it down and apply from my hand to my cheek.
It’s smooth on midlife skin and gives a gentle glow.
And actually, the best liquid eyeliner is by NARS as well —
the Climax Liquid Eyeliner (£20.82, boots.com) has the best feathered tip point I’ve ever used.
You cannot make a mistake using this as a liquid liner.
Apply from the inner corner of the eye to the outside.
I always hold my fingers on the end of the eye and pull slightly so that the skin is
firm. And I use a Q Tip to create a little flick upwards at the end.
Finally, we can’t leave out MAC. All make-up artists love MAC.
Some products deliver more than others, but I’ve
been using the Studio Fix Fluid Foundation (£34,
maccosmetics.co.uk) since it was created. It’s a standout product.
Go a shade or two darker than your natural skin colour.
Don’t . . . use heavier foundation thinking it will cover up imperfections.
As you get older less and lighter is better. You cannot cover wrinkles with makeup.
Use blush subtly, to create healthy glow
Make-up artist Florrie White, 50, has worked with Uma Thurman,
Gillian Anderson and Meg Ryan.
Florrie says: I work with some very beautiful older women, and what’s important is that you aren’t
showing off the make-up, you’re showing off the individual and enhancing their beauty.
I’m flattered they ask me to do their make-up, because by this age you know what you want to look like.
I turned 50 myself this year and I’ve noticed that you do need to tweak your make-up.
I use the same amount, but I’m using far lighter
products on my skin — tinted moisturiser rather than foundation. Shiseido
Revitalessence Skin Glow foundation, SPF30 (£49, lookfantastic.com) gives a luminous glow and you can still see your
skin, which is what you want.

It looks healthier and fresher. Covered-up skin is very old-fashioned.

The tinted moisturiser I’d recommend is Trinny London BFF SPF30 Cream (£39, trinnylondon.com).
You can get sensitive eyes as you get older, and I recommend dyeing eyelashes
and brows. There’s a good dye called RefectoCil (£5.95, justmylook.com) which
makes them look thicker and you don’t need mascara.
It’s also smudge and waterproof.
I’ve had a lot of comments about Gillian Anderson’s make-up this awards season, and I’ve been using
green around her eyes, which might seem surprising.
I’m a big fan of Victoria Beckham’s Satin Kajal Liner (£30, victoriabeckhambeauty.com).
Smudge these deep purples, blues or greens into
the roots of the lashes then black mascara, and that will add
light around the eyes.
The brand Violette FR does amazing lipsticks that are more like stains and last a long time without sinking into lip wrinkles.
Apply its sheer matte lipstick called Bisou Balm (£29,
violettefr.com) with a lip brush.
Don’t . . . make your blush a ‘feature’ unless you want to look like a doll or are slightly desperate to hide
tiredness. Think of it as adding a warmth or a healthy glow to your complexion.

Get an outdoor glow, it’s all about hydration
Oscar-nominated Amber Sibley, 55, has worked with Annie Lennox,
Thandiwe Newton and Willem Dafoe.
Amber says: Ideally you’ve adapted your make-up
over the years, but for me working on older skin is about hydration — a well-hydrated complexion creates a healthy base for make-up.
I always start with a serum called Rainforest Dew
by Tropic (£44, tropicskincare.com), which improves skin hydration as you wear it.
Pat all over the face and neck, decolletage, and especially
the hollow at the base of the neck. Blush-wise,
I always use lipstick on the cheek in a plum or blood-coloured shade such as Amaryllis by Dr Hauschka (£20.50, drhauschka.co.uk), so it looks
as though you’ve walked through a forest or field
and have got a lovely outdoor glow.

Lipstick stays put and the sheen looks fresh and natural.
Dab on the apples of your cheeks where you’d blush if you were embarrassed.
My main tip for the over 50s is to use concealer in the middle of the crow’s feet at the outside
corner of the eye. Most people have a pinker area there that goes downwards.
Tap some Tropic Illuma Light-Diffusing Concealer (£18, tropicskincare.co.uk)
into that corner.
It gives the illusion of lifting the eye. Use a shade a tiny bit lighter than your own skin tone.
Concealer is more important than foundation — you can also use it at the deepest
point on either side of the bridge of the nose and
under the bag beneath the eye.
Mascara is vital for defining the eye. You need to get right to
the roots of the eyelash to emphasise them. Start in the middle and work to the
outside, then do just a few going towards the nose.
Green People Volumising Mascara (£21.50, greenpeople.co.uk), is great for sensitive
eyes. Or Tropic Fixing Gel Mascara (£18, tropicskincare.co.uk),
stays on in the rain but isn’t waterproof so comes off easily.
Use the same principle with eyebrows which
get thinner and paler. Fill in just a little with a creamy pomade to
make a big difference. Ensure the main body of the brow
is parallel to the arch and then tapers off. Natural

Don’t . . . put concealer over your whole under-eye area like
the Tik-Tokers. Don’t forget your inner light is what shines through your face and makes
you beautiful.

Christmas markets, once considered a cornerstone
of seasonal shopping, may have lost their festive sheen a little.
Shoppers have been reporting underwhelming visits to the nation’s pop-up
yuletide stalls at towns and cities across the UK this
year.
Consumer complaints have taken a common thread, with some saying that for
every artisan seller you find, there’s another type
of vendor, selling ‘overpriced tat’ – including merchandise that might have been picked up online via sites including Amazon, Shein, Temu
and Etsy.
Others have complained that the markets themselves are sparse, with little to peruse – and overpriced food items.
One TikTok user, @laura_leannne14 recently took to the platform to share a video of
her trip to Glasgow Fort Market.
Accompanying her video, she shared a caption that said:
‘I popped into the Fort today looking forward to
having a nosey around the stalls, to my disappointment there was barely
anything.’
Among the few items shown in the clip was a stall selling ‘personalised’ ornaments for a staggering £12 a piece.
Similar pieces can be snapped up online via sites like Not on the High Street starting at around just £3.

Birmingham: Swiss style chalets more than triple in price
A photo taken from a stall at Birmingham market this winter season revealed
traditional-style weather houses selling for between £30 and £85 –
but similar ones can be snapped up cheaper online
This version of a ‘wetterhaus’, styled around a German or Swiss chalet and featuring a thermometer,
is selling online at Amazon for less than a tenner
Chocolate box Swiss and German chalet decorations add an element of Alpine chic to seasonal decorations – but buying them
online as opposed to at festive markets could save shoppers almost a third.
A pretty-looking stall at Birmingham Christmas market is currently bedecked with
cuckoo clocks and mini chalets – the latter
often featuring thermometers and known as ‘Wetterhaus’.
The traditional-looking items sell for from between £40 to £85 at the market, but a similar version is available
on Amazon at a cut of the cost. A weather house currently retailing on Amazon via the brand
Masinies costs £9.96 before delivery.
Edinburgh: Paper stars up to £19 pricier than online
Another TikTok user who enjoyed their day out showed some of the craftier items on offer at Christmas markers, including wooden ornaments
of owls and candles made in vintage teacups.
The social media user, who uses the handle @cliosarahjackson, enjoyed
the occasion, accompanying the clip with a caption.
It read: ’10/10 we went in the day and was nowhere near as busy!
We had a walk through and seen all the stalls and as we had eaten before we didnt stop at
any of the food stalls but they looked soooo good […] Definitely recommend.’
However, while they enjoyed the market, the video showed paper stars
on offer, with a price tag that appeared to read £21.
While some of the decorations were very elaborate, the simpler ones are similar to ones that can be picked up via Temu for
just £2.

While York’s Christmas Market is now over, it is a hugely popular event that often brings in people from outside the city for a festive day out.
However, among the vendors’ unique items, one stall was spotted
selling ballet-themed keyrings that appeared to be the
same as some available on Temu.
The pointe shoe keyrings were priced at £12 at the market stall.

Belfast: £9 mark-up on mug
It comes after it was revealed that a stall at a Christmas
market in Belfast was offering a ‘Just a Girl’ hamster meme mug for £14.
The item, which retails for £5 on Shein, was being offered alongside some illustrated reusable Starbucks
cups which were priced at a staggering £20.
Meanwhile, TikTok users have also spotted near identical garlic grater
plates on sale at Bristol and York Christmas markets – when they can be sourced for half
the price online.

Liverpool: £5.50 mark-up on Christmas decorations
Earlier this year, Liverpool Christmas market, which has been running for the past
18 years, opened its doors again.
In 2023, over 750,000 visitors flocked to the festive market – and its proving
to be equally as popular this time round.
TikTok user Lauren was among the first guests to return to the market and filmed a video browsing some of the Christmas tree decorations on sale.
In her video, the social media user paused to take a look at some personalised 2D wooden baubles, which
retail for £7 each.

On Etsy, an incredibly similar design – which can also

Bath: Paper lanterns £13 more expensive than Temu
Edinburgh was not the only market spotted selling
star-shaped paper lanterns at high prices – some were also on offer at a stall in Bath.
There, the ornaments were being sold for £15 – despite the similar designs that
can be found on Temu for as little as £2.
Giving the market one star out of five last year, one TripAdvisor
user wrote: ‘The items for sale (if you could actually access
the sheds) were generally very expensive.
‘The impression gained is that Bath is not a big enough location to
host this type of tourist attraction.’

In Belfast, one stall appeared to be making a killing selling items you can buy on Amazon and Etsy for an inflated price point.
Last month, the TikTok user Northern Ireland Traveller
posted a tour of the Belfast Christmas market – which ended with footage of the stall selling slippers, key chains,
mugs and Starbucks cups.

by putting the ‘sad hamster’ illustration on a mug, which they’re selling for £14.
On Shein, shoppers can pick up the same version –
complete with matching text and baby pink inside – for £5 on Shein.

Tide turns on pricey Christmas markets: Fans vow to boycott overcrowded ‘hell

In Edinburgh, the cheapest ornament appears to be
around the £27 mark. In contrast, a very similar version of the Christmas chalet
is only £13 on Amazon.
Writing on TripAdvisor, one Edinburgh local moaned the market has changed beyond all recognition.
They wrote: ‘I’ve lived in Edinburgh all my life (30 years) and the Christmas market used
to be one of my favourite events of the year in Edinburgh, it was truly magical and so much fun right
through until my early 20’s.
‘In the last 5-10 years it’s changed a lot, much more
expensive, the stalls feel less independent and more tat and
the main issue is the crowds. Makes it honestly unbearable to visit,
you queue for 20 minutes for 1 cup of overpriced mulled
wine and don’t bother with any of the rides because you’ll wait
all day to get on.’
Since Christmas markets have been opening, people have been sharing videos of the overwhelming crowds that have
gathered in city centres for the festivities.
Last month, one TikToker called Rachel shared a video of her walk into York when she found herself
in the hoards of people trying to get to the market.
She wrote: ‘Every year, I make the mistake of going into York centre on a Saturday in Xmas season.’
‘Literally forget how stressful it is every year,’ she added in the caption.
One viewer replied: ‘I simply do not go into town on weekends once
the markets start. Weekdays and evenings only.’
‘I live in York,’ another added. ‘This time of year is a nightmare.’
‘Imagine trying to get to work on time and having to walk through
that,’ a third said.
Social media users have also threatened to ‘boycott’ their local markets in York
and Birmingham During a visit, X user Jack spotted a stall serving steak and chips for £14 – while a single portion of chips with a sauce was £7.
He fumed: ‘Christmas markets need to be stopped.
It’s a shameless money grab from families (usually) and there’s f*** all traditional about it anyway!’
And Jack isn’t the only former Christmas market fan who is now
pledging to boycott them entirely over the food prices.

Around the same time, X user Alice fumed: ‘I never want to
go to a Christmas market in the UK. Stand around a grotty high street and pay £10 for
a cup of lukewarm wine? No thank you.’
Meanwhile, Birmingham Christmas market – which has
enforced a one-beer rule for visitors – was slammed last month for its ‘rip-off’ £9 hot dog
and £4.50 bag of almonds.
John Beard, 35, from Birmingham, said: ‘This will be the first time in ten years I’m not going to bother
[going].
‘It’s a combination of the rip-off prices and that
one beer rule is just daft. You can queue for half hour
there easily so sometimes you want to double up.
‘People are watching the pennies more than ever and don’t want
to spend nearly a tenner on a sausage. You can blow about £50
in ten minutes.’
