The grisly film – made for about $2 million – stars Thornton as homicidal

‘This shows Hollywood that we need to start making movies
that take risks again.
The star said he had yet to see the panned Joker sequel,
saying: ‘I was shocked too as the first Joker film
I loved, I’m curious to see why people aren’t as crazy about the second one.’
Terrifier 3, written and directed by Damien Leone, is an un-rated
blood fest, which has received a 78-percent rating from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences have ‘certified’ it ‘hot’ and given it a healthy 90-percent on the popcornmeter.
The film earned $18.3 million at the box office according to The Numbers.
Landing in third place was Joker: Folie à Deux. After winning the box
office competition during its debut weekend could not overcome the bad reviews, enduring an 82-percent
decline in ticket sales.
The movie collected only $7.055 million, in spite of being in more than four thousand theaters across the US.

A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report, saying ‘Any estimates suggested by anonymous «insiders» or «rival executives» are grossly wrong and continues a trend where
rumor is reported as fact.’
‘The film continues to play in theatrical release, included with
this week’s opening in China, and will continue to earn revenue
throughout its home viewing and ancillary run.’
So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has grossed
$51.5 million domestically and $165 million globally after two weeks of release.

Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first time author dreams of – massive amounts of free publicity online, in newspapers and on TV and
radio.
And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack
on Aston over what was written in his book, The Chairman’s Lounge
– The Inside Story of how Qantas sold us out.
Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which has led
to him being called ‘upgrade Albo’ – and calls for
an inquiry, Aston told Daily Mail Australia his book is ‘not a hit job on Anthony
Albanese’.
Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’,
but reiterated that the Prime Minister ‘had a direct line to Alan Joyce’.
The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy
on Qantas flights by personally requesting them from the airline’s then CEO Mr Joyce – which the Prime
Minister has categorically denied.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese got upgrades
for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu.
But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose to shoot the messenger and, in turn, shot
himself in the foot.
He said Aston was using the accusations to sell books and said he was hiding his employment
history.
‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal
Party staffer… I don’t see declarations he’s a former Qantas employee,’ the Prime Minister said.
But before the book even gets to the contents page there is a photo of Aston that refers to
him as the then-Qantas corporate communications senior adviser.

And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked for
then-Liberal MP Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney seat of Cook
before Scott Morrison.
‘My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed, it’s in the first
line of the first page of the book,’ Aston said on Tuesday night,
just before his book launch.
Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese’s response
gave the book, Aston was still ‘staggered’ at the untrue claims about him the Prime
Minister made.
‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this many times
with public figures and leaders who struggle to see their own part in it, the terrible circumstances that they create,’ he said.

Asked if Mr Albanese had been poorly advised in his attack, Aston, who is a former
Australian Financial Review columnist, wonders if the Prime Minister ‘even listens
to advice at this point’.
‘All he’s doing is talking around the issue and he’s blaming
me and he’s blaming other MP’s for also taking upgrades (on Qantas flights).
‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk
about, which is, did you ask Qantas for confirmed upgrades on your
private holidays when you were the Transport Minister?
The answer is «yes» and he’s desperately trying to avoid saying it.’
Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the Prime Minister should refer himself to the anti-corruption commission over the flight upgrades.
Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase of a $4.3million clifftop mansion while so many
people are struggling to pay their mortgage or rent, the latest blow to his credibility has led to calls for him to resign.
Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though.
‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this part to get this far.
I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.

‘So to the extent that it has, I would say … anyone who
reads the book will learn that this book is not a
hit job on Anthony Albanese. This book is about Qantas.
‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences politicians on both sides of
the aisle, Labor, Liberal, National, you
name it. They’ve been doing it for more than a generation.
‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia. I’m not here trying to get a
scalp. That’s not what this book is about and
it never was.’
But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the conversations being had across Australia
and eventually winds up back on Mr Albanese.
‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public is with the freebie mindset of politicians,’ he said.

‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a long time and that
kind of behaviour is quite normalised to him, is what I’ve seen.
‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at the front row
of the Australian Open Tennis.
‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every year for 12 years and he was
the only Prime Minister (I saw there).
‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the front row
of the International Grand Slam. He’s the first Prime Minister who I’ve ever
seen do that.
‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it looks like to others when he’s on the
gravy train. And I think (the claims in the book are) just another example
of that.’
In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s travel to be booked in economy, then someone in their office phones the airline and asks if their flight can be upgraded.
The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he had a
very direct line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.
‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where it’s in the booking and if the
seat’s empty when the flight closes, you’ll get upgraded.
‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where the ticket is converted and
you are guaranteed. You’re not going to the airport crossing your fingers going «Geez, I hope there is a spare seat».
‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat and the only person at Qantas who can issue those types of upgrades
is the CEO. No other executive can do that.
‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades (for Anthony Albanese).’
Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes during his time as a travel journalist,
and understands the attraction for politicians to get up there.
‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too. Once you’ve experienced the front of the plane,
it’s very hard to go back.
‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff and
they’ve got chauffeured cars and they fly in business, but they don’t get paid like CEOs …
‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford to go
flying around in the front of the plane on personal travel.
‘A normal person would say «Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’
Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.
But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events.
Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.
‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

An invitation to lunch at Caviar Kaspia was, once upon a
time, an offer you simply didn’t refuse. Providing, of course,
that the bill was on someone else. Because caviar, smeared on blinis or
piled high on baked potatoes, sure didn’t come cheap. There may have been other
things on the menu, but no one paid them much heed.
This was all about lashings of the black stuff.
Caviar Kaspia’s signature baked potato and caviar: ‘there are few better dishes on earth…only the price,
at just under £150, is ridiculous’
Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades back.
And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews,
was taken over by Gavin Rankin (who used to be the boss),
and transformed into the brilliant Bellamy’s. It
prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand, went quiet.
Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club in another Mayfair backstreet.
But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning the doors were opened to the
great unwashed.
Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit
near empty – dining room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze of a stern painting of a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by
the glare of table lamps, indecorously bright, while a loud soundtrack of indolent,
indeterminate beats throbs in the background. The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.
Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous couture.
They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone.
Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.
We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur that tastes
far better than it ought to. Next door, a large table fills with a
glut of the noisily, glossily confident.
We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent charm and charisma
that had she burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’, we would have barely blinked.
Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with butter and
sour cream, are a study in tuber art. A cool jet-black
splodge of oscietra caviar, gently saline, raises them
to the sublime. Only the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous.
But there are few better dishes on earth. I’d eat this every day if I could.
But I can’t. Obviously. That’s the problem with caviar. One
taste is never enough.

Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first time author dreams of –
massive amounts of free publicity online, in newspapers and on TV and radio.
And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack on Aston over what was
written in his book, The Chairman’s Lounge – The Inside Story of how Qantas sold us
out.
Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which has led to him being called ‘upgrade Albo’ – and calls for an inquiry, Aston told Daily Mail Australia his book is ‘not a hit job
on Anthony Albanese’.
Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’, but
reiterated that the Prime Minister ‘had a direct line to
Alan Joyce’.
The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy on Qantas flights by personally requesting them from the airline’s then CEO Mr Joyce – which the Prime
Minister has categorically denied.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11
of the 22 flights Mr Albanese got upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome,
London, Los Angeles and Honolulu.
But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose
to shoot the messenger and, in turn, shot himself in the foot.
He said Aston was using the accusations to sell books and said he was hiding his employment history.
‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal Party staffer… I don’t
see declarations he’s a former Qantas employee,’ the Prime Minister said.
But before the book even gets to the contents page
there is a photo of Aston that refers to him as the then-Qantas corporate communications senior adviser.

And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked
for then-Liberal MP Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney seat of Cook before
Scott Morrison.
‘My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed, it’s in the first line of the first
page of the book,’ Aston said on Tuesday night, just before his
book launch.
Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese’s response gave the
book, Aston was still ‘staggered’ at the untrue claims
about him the Prime Minister made.
‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this
many times with public figures and leaders who struggle to see their own part in it,
the terrible circumstances that they create,’ he said.

Asked if Mr Albanese had been poorly advised in his attack, Aston, who is a former
Australian Financial Review columnist, wonders if the Prime Minister ‘even listens to advice at this point’.
‘All he’s doing is talking around the issue and he’s blaming me and he’s blaming other MP’s for also
taking upgrades (on Qantas flights).
‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk
about, which is, did you ask Qantas for confirmed upgrades on your
private holidays when you were the Transport Minister?
The answer is «yes» and he’s desperately trying to
avoid saying it.’
Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the
Prime Minister should refer himself to the anti-corruption commission over the flight upgrades.
Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase of a $4.3million clifftop mansion while so
many people are struggling to pay their mortgage or rent, the
latest blow to his credibility has led to calls for him to resign.
Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though.
‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this
part to get this far. I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.

‘So to the extent that it has, I would say … anyone who reads the book will learn that this book is not a hit
job on Anthony Albanese. This book is about Qantas.
‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences politicians on both sides of the aisle,
Labor, Liberal, National, you name it. They’ve been doing it
for more than a generation.
‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia.
I’m not here trying to get a scalp. That’s not what this book is
about and it never was.’
But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the conversations being had across
Australia and eventually winds up back on Mr Albanese.
‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public is with the freebie mindset of politicians,’ he said.

‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a long time and that kind of behaviour is quite normalised to him, is what I’ve seen.
‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at the front
row of the Australian Open Tennis.
‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost
every year for 12 years and he was the only Prime Minister (I saw there).
‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the front row of the International Grand Slam.
He’s the first Prime Minister who I’ve ever seen do that.
‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it looks
like to others when he’s on the gravy train. And I think (the claims in the book
are) just another example of that.’
In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s travel to be booked in economy, then someone in their office phones
the airline and asks if their flight can be upgraded.
The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he had a very direct line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.
‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where it’s in the booking and if the seat’s empty when the flight closes, you’ll get upgraded.
‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where
the ticket is converted and you are guaranteed. You’re not
going to the airport crossing your fingers going «Geez, I hope there is a spare seat».
‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat and the only person at Qantas who can issue those types of upgrades
is the CEO. No other executive can do that.
‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades (for Anthony Albanese).’
Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes during his time
as a travel journalist, and understands the attraction for politicians to get up there.
‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too.
Once you’ve experienced the front of the plane, it’s very hard to go
back.
‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff and they’ve got chauffeured cars and they fly in business,
but they don’t get paid like CEOs …
‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford to go flying around in the front of the plane on personal travel.
‘A normal person would say «Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’
Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.
But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events.
Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.
‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

Wednesday’s queues were caused by many technical problems, including issues with tablets used to register

The 21-year-old student said he had waited in line until 11:00 pm on Wednesday but left before being able to vote as he had exams the next day.

Amid tepid returns at the box office for Joker: Folie à Deux, a number of fans of
the sequel took to social media over the weekend in defense of the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.
The film, which sees Joaquin Phoenix return to the lead role of The Joker/Arthur Fleck,
debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic
box office, good enough for the weekend’s top spot, but less than projections,
and half that of its predecessor.
Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for
the movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature
of sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.
‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100% as divisive as people
are making it out to be. I love that the film didn’t try to be a
traditional sequel, and fully committed to the storytelling they presented.
It never deviated to be a film full of Easter eggs or any other crowd pleasing aspects.’
Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how it
was structured as a meta-exploration of the first film’s fandom
and the musical elements were a lot of fun.’

The movie’s box office collapse was swift and has many in the industry wondering:
How did the highly anticipated sequel to an Oscar-winning, billion-dollar film with the same creative team go wrong?
Just three weeks ago, tracking services
pegged the movie for a $70 million debut, which would still have been down a fair amount from Joker’s record-breaking $96.2 million launch in October 2019.

It got a meager half star out of five possible.
‘That´s a double whammy that´s very difficult to recover from,’ said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior
media analyst for Comscore. ‘The biggest issue of all
is the reported budget. A $40 or $50 million opening for a less
expensive movie would be a solid debut.’
Joker: Folie à Deux cost at least twice as much as the first
film to produce, though reported figures vary at exactly how pricey it was
to make. Phillips told Variety that it was less than the reported $200 million; Others have it pegged at $190 million. Warner Bros.
released the film in 4,102 locations in North America. About 12.5 percent of its domestic total came from 415 IMAX screens.
Internationally, it’s earned $81.1 million from 25,788 screens, bringing its total global earnings estimate to $121.1
million. In the next two weeks, Joker 2 will also open in Japan and China.
Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s The
Wild Robot, which added $18.7 million in its second weekend,
bringing its domestic total to nearly $64 million. Globally, it’s made over $100 million. Warner Bros.’ Beetlejuice
Beetlejuice took third place in weekend five,
Paramount’s Transformers One landed in fourth and Universal
and Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil rounded out the top five.
The other big new release of the weekend,
Lionsgate’s White Bird, flopped with just $1.5 million from just over 1,000 locations, despite an A+ CinemaScore.
Overall, the weekend is up from the same frame last year,
but Joker’s start is an unwelcome twist for theater owners
hoping to narrow the box office deficit.
The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces,
some who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans of the first movie

The sequel added Lady Gaga into the fold , as a Joker superfan, and delved

alongside the film.
The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces, some who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans of the first movie.
In cruder terms, it´s been called a ‘middle finger.’ But fans often ignore the advice of critics, especially when it
comes to opening their wallets to see revered comic book
characters on the big screen.
‘They took a swing for the fences,’ Dergarabedian said.
‘But except for a couple of outliers, audiences in 2024 seem to want to know what
they´re getting when they´re going to the theater.
They want the tried and true, the familiar.’
Deadline editor Anthony D´Alessandro thinks the problem started with the idea to make the Joker sequel a musical.
‘No fan of the original movie wanted to see a musical sequel,
‘ he wrote on Saturday.
The first film was also divisive and the subject of much discourse, then about whether it might send the wrong message to
the wrong type of person. And yet people still flocked to see
what the fuss was about. Joker went on to pick up 11 Oscar nominations, including best picture and best director, and three wins.
It also made over $1 billion and was the highest-grossing R-rated film of all
time, until this summer when Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine took the crown.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S.
and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore.
Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

Hamas’ leader Yahya Sinwar could have given an order to execute
all the hostages who remain in Gaza if he died, a top Israeli negotiator has claimed.
Sinwar died on Wednesday after the IDF encountered him by chance,
sending a drone to kill the terror leader.
Gershon Baskin, the Israeli negotiator who oversaw Sinwar’s 2011 release from an Israeli prison, along with 1,026 Palestinian prisoners, in exchange
for the return of kidnapped soldier Gilad Shilat, said that his death was a ‘moment of either opportunity or a
moment of doom.’
‘A moment of doom because there are rumours that Sinwar instructed people holding hostages
that, should he be killed, they should kill their hostages,
‘ he told the Telegraph.
At the time of Sinwar’s death, just over 100 hostages remained in Gaza,
with 60 thought to still be alive.
Those who remain alive are at risk of never being returned to
their families, according Haaretz, which reported on Sunday that top US officials, including
Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, have assessed there is a
slim chance of a deal being brokered, given the tensions
between Israel and Hamas.

A senior Israeli official told the newspaper on Sunday,
several days after Sinwar’s passing: ‘There are currently no serious cease-fire talks, and
Blinken is fully aware of this.’

They added: ‘It’s unclear how Sinwar’s death will impact any potential
negotiations, if they even exist at this stage.’
While Baskin told the Telegraph that it wasn’t possible to confirm whether Sinwar had a kill order on the hostages,
he said the rumours ought to be taken seriously, given how little Hamas appears to care for them.
He cited the horrific killing of six hostages
in tunnels under Rafah in late August.
Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari said the six
were ‘cruelly murdered by Hamas just a short time before we
got to them.’
The six dead hostages were identified as Eden Yerushalmi,
24, Carmel Gat, 39, Almog Sarusi, 26, Alex Lubnov, 26, Ori Danino, 25, and Hersh Goldberg-Polin, 23.
Five of those who were recovered had been attending the Nova music festival when Hamas terrorists began slaughtering festivalgoers, while
taking others hostage. Gat was at her family kibbutz when she was captured.

He said the return of the hostages depended entirely on whether Israel is able to make a deal
with Hamas.
‘It’s a moment of opportunity where Israel should be issuing a
very clear call that anyone who’s holding
a hostage that releases them will be given free passage for themselves and their family out
of Gaza to another country, as well as a lot of money.
‘In order to encourage them to do that, Israel
should also be reaching out to Egypt and Qatar and tell them
to renew the negotiations quickly, not on the
deal that’s been negotiated without success for almost four
months, but on a deal that would bring the hostages home quicker and would obviously require Israel to end the war.’
He said a deal would likely mean the release of Palestinian prisoners, a controversial point for many Israelis who believe that their
release would simply lead to another October 7-style attack in the

James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty
last month.
A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide.
Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’
In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does not include
a DC Studios logo.

raked in $20 million at the domestic box office, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Phoenix reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel, which had earned him an Oscar for his portrayal in the 2019 film, while Gaga took on the
role of Harleen Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn).
However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore — the
lowest score for a comic book movie.
Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this year and also received terrible reviews — holds a higher score with a C+.

The sequel is projected to rake in less that $50 million at

Joker (2019) notably opened with $96.2 million when the film first released in theaters
– and eventually landed a little over $1 billion in the global box office.

a budget of between $55 and $70 million. However, the budget
increased for Folie À Deux to around $200 million.
The 2019 movie garnered praise and positive reviews from both critics and audiences – and won the Golden Lion during the 76th Venice

Horror movies topped the domestic box office charts and
an Oscar contender got off to a sparkling start this weekend.
«Smile 2,» in its first weekend, and «Terrifier 3″ in its second proved to
be the big draws for general movie audiences in North America, while the Palme d´Or winner»Anora» got the best per-theater average in over a year.
«Smile 2» was the big newcomer, taking first place with a better than expected $23 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.
Parker Finn returned to write and direct the sequel to the supernatural
horror «Smile,» his debut. Originally intended for streaming,
Paramount pivoted and sent the movie to theaters in the
fall of 2022. «Smile» became a sleeper hit
at the box office, earning some $217 million against a
$17 million budget.
The sequel, starring Naomi Scott as a pop star, was rewarded with a bit
of a bigger budget, and a theatrical commitment from the start.
Playing on 3,619 screens, it opened slightly higher than the first’s $22 million.
Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks Animation´s «The Wild Robot» in its fourth weekend with $10.1 million, bumping it past $100 million in North America.
Family films often have long lives in theaters, particularly ones as well reviewed
as «The Wild Robot,» and some have speculated that it got a bump
this weekend from teenagers buying tickets for the PG-rated family film and then sneaking into
«Terrifier 3,» which is not rated, instead. Either way, Damien Leone´s demon clown movie,
which cost only $2 million to produce, is doing more than fine
with legitimate ticket buyers. It added an estimated $9.3 million,
bringing its total to $36.2 million.
«Rumors like that are PR gold,» said Paul Dergarabedian, the
senior media analyst for Comscore. «There´s no better indication that that movie is red hot right now.»
The No. 1 openings for «Smile 2» this weekend and «Terrifier 3» last were only
possible because of the failure of «Joker: Folie à Deux.» That big budget sequel
continued its death march in its third weekend, falling another 69% to earn $2.2
million, bringing its domestic total to $56.4 million.

Warner Bros. has a better performer in «Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,» which placed fourth in its seventh
weekend with an additional $5 million, bringing its
domestic total to $284 million. Star Michael Keaton also had another film open this weekend – the father-daughter dramedy «Goodrich» which stumbled in with only $600,000 from
1,055 locations.
Rounding out the top five was the romantic tearjerker «We Live In Time,» which
expanded to 985 theaters following last weekend’s
debut on 5 screens. The A24 release starring Andrew Garfield and
Florence Pugh earned $4.2 million over the weekend. Audiences were 85% under
35 and 70% female, according to exit polls. The well-reviewed film will expand
further next weekend.
One of the other brightest spots of the weekend was Sean Baker´s «Anora,» which opened in six locations in New York and Los Angeles and earned
an estimated $630,000. That´s a $105,000 per theater average, the
best since «Asteroid City´s» $142,000 average last summer.
The Neon release, a sensation at Cannes and a likely Oscar contender, stars Mikey Madison as a New
York sex worker who falls for the son of a Russian oligarch.
After several weeks of would-be awards contenders and buzzy films («Piece by Piece,» «Saturday Night,» «The Apprentice» among them) fizzling with audiences, «Anora´s» success is a promising sign that moviegoers will still seek out arty, adult fare.
«For moviegoers, there´s a lot on offer with something in every type of movie in every category,» Dergarabedian said.
«I think we´re going to have a really strong home stretch with a great combination of movies big and small.»
The Walt Disney Co. also made a splash with several re-releases.
«The Nightmare Before Christmas» got a place in the top 10
with $1.1 million, while «Hocus Pocus» made $841,000.
Next weekend will have a major studio comic book movie with «Venom: The Last Dance» as well as an awards movie in the papal thriller «Conclave» vying for audience attention.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S.
and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

Anthony Albanese has tried to claim his relationship with
Alan Joyce was a strictly professional one between a Prime Minister
and a corporate titan, as he battles claims the Qantas boss was his ‘personal travel agent’
for free flights and upgrades.
However that characterization of the relationship was at odds with that made by Mr
Joyce, who said he was ‘good mates’ with Mr Albanese and had
been ‘for years’.
In the wake of the explosive claims that the Prime Minister
had Mr Joyce arrange free tickets and upgrades, Mr Albanese distanced himself
from the Qantas chief.
When asked about about their relationship on Sunday Mr Albanese implied it was purely in a professional capacity, having been Transport Minister and shadow transport spokesperson before becoming Prime Minister.
‘He (Joyce) was the CEO of the national airline …
I had the same relationship with him that I have with John Borghetti as the CEO of Virgin,’
Mr Albanese said.
That assessment was at odds with the many photos showing Mr Albanese
and Mr Joyce apparently greatly enjoying each other’s company.
Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce were pictured in high spirits on the red carpet
at the Qantas 100th Gala Dinner in March last year.
In photos from the event, Mr Joyce proudly walks the red carpet with one arm around the prime minister and
the other around Mr Albanese’s partner, Jodie Haydon.
Just five months later, in August, a smiling Mr Albanese attended Qantas’s unveiling
of it’s special ‘Yes 23′ emblazoned airplanes for the Voice referendum.
Former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce jovially walked the red carpet with one arm
around the prime minister and the other around his partner, Jodie Haydon for a special anniversary event last year
Mr Joyce was seen touching Mr Albanese’s arm, with the PM bursting into laughter.
Even when Scott Morrison was PM, Mr Joyce enjoyed an apparently close relationship with Mr
Albanese as the pair stood close together at the
launch of the Qantas’ landmark Perth to London flight in March, 2018.
During a Senate hearing in September 2023, Mr Joyce said he had been ‘friends for years’ with Mr Albanese.
Asked about why he gifted Mr Albanese’s son Nathan a membership to the prestigious and exclusive Chairman’s Lounge Mr Joyce refused to confirm or
deny but talked up his relationship with the Prime Minister.
‘I’ve been good mates with Albo for some time,’ Mr Joyce said.
However, the then Qantas CEO refused to say whether he lobbied
the Prime Minister on the controversial decision to lock competitor
Qatar Airways out of domestic routes.
It has since emerged in a new book about Qantas, The Chairman’s Lounge, by former Australian Financial
Review columnist Joe Aston that Ms Haydon is also a Chairman’s Lounge member.

Anthony Albanese fires up and launches a brutal personal attack on book author
Reports have emerged in a new book Mr Albanese received 22 upgrades from
economy from Qantas and he would liaise personally with the former airline boss for them.
Aston also alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr
Joyce while in his various parliamentary jobs to ask for special
upgrades for himself or his family.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the
22 flights Mr Albanese received upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips
to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu, with some being for holidays.
Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that the London flights was for work purposes and all were
‘declared in the appropriate way’.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has leapt on the accusations describing Mr Albanese as being
the ‘best friend’ of Mr Joyce.
Mr Dutton told Sky News on Monday night it was ‘strange’ Mr Albanese had
directly contacted Mr Joyce to request upgrades while holding
a regulatory position in the transport sector.
‘If you’re the Transport Minister and you’re picking up the phone to one of the most important stakeholders in the portfolio asking for a free upgrade, then again,
I think the Prime Minister would be able to answer those questions more effectively
than anyone else because I’m not aware of anyone else having done it,’ Mr Dutton said.
It has since emerged that Ms Haydon also has membership of the Qantas Chairman’s
Lounge
The Prime Minister denied frequently asking Mr Joyce for upgrades on Tuesday at
press conference in the NSW city of Newcastle.
‘The only discussions that I can recall with Alan Joyce certainly were not discussed through calls – we discussed
the first flight from Australia to Dubai on the A380,’ he said.
‘I’ve declared everything in accordance with all of the rules.’
Aston was asked on Monday night by ABC interviewer
Sarah Ferguson about how confident he was that Mr Albanese had made calls personally to Mr Joyce for upgrades.
‘I am very comfortable with my sourcing,’ Aston said.
Asked whether he thought Mr Albanese had been influenced by Mr Joyce’s lobbying to block UAE airline Qatar domestically Aston said it was ‘implausible’ to
think that the Prime Minister’s office had nothing to do with
the decision.
Mr Albanese’s son Nathan, 24, has reportedly also been granted

‘It’s very hard to imagine a decision of any political sensitivity in the
Albanese government that would not go through the
Prime Minister’s office,’ Aston replied.
He noted the opening up of the Australian domestic market Qatar
had seemingly been sailing through with Transport Minister Catherine King speaking warmly about the proposal until ‘everything changed’ to stop it dead in tracks.
Ms King repeatedly denied in parliament the decision to block Qatar was due to Qantas lobbying her or any Labor
colleagues.
Despite Mr Albanese claiming he declared every upgrade received from Qantas the Australian Financial Review reported on Tuesday that he
failed to do for his former wife Carmel Tebbutt when the two traveled together.

Another awkward paradox of Mr Albanese’s
apparent close relationship with Mr Joyce is that the Labor leader
in a trade unionist advocate while Qantas attempted to break the
power of the Transport Workers Union by sacking 1700 staff
during Covid.
The sacking has since been ruled illegal by Federal Court in a case brought by the union with Qantas facing
possible hundreds of thousands in compensation payouts.
The friendship however did find one perhaps unlikely defender
in semi-retired 3AW radio star Neil Mitchell.
‘Quick test: upgrade Albo is a bad look,’ Mitchell wrote on X.
‘But does anybody believe he was seriously compromised by having Alan Joyce as a bestie?

However, a Live Nation spokesperson confirmed: ‘There is no 2025 tour planned.’
The Sun reports that Lady Gaga will instead tour in 2026.

‘I’m not going to talk through specifics of the diet, because I just think nobody

‘But this time, it felt a bit more complicated just because there was
so much dance rehearsal that we were doing, which I didn’t have last time.
‘It felt a bit more difficult, but it is safe. But you’re
right, I’m now 49, I probably shouldn’t do this again. This
is probably it for me.’

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq slipped on Thursday after ending the previous session on a positive note, while investors assessed some of the last economic datasets ahead
of the Federal Reserve’s meeting.
The Nasdaq soared past the 20,000 mark for the
first time on Wednesday as the technology rally
showed no signs of a halt, while the S&P 500 closed at its
highest in nearly a week after an in-line inflation reading locked
in a 25 basis point cut by the Fed at its Dec. 17-18 meeting.
Meanwhile, data showed U.S. producer prices rose more than expected in November amid a surge in the
cost of food, but a moderation in the prices of services offered hope
that the disinflationary trend remains in place.
«Those numbers are a little bit hotter than expectations and (are) on the heels of CPI,» said Thomas
Martin, senior portfolio manager at Globalt Investments.
«(The Fed) is going to (cut rates) because it wants to stay on that path and would like to have rates be lower, but there’s this risk about inflation.»
Separately, data showed the number of Americans filing new applications for unemployment benefits rose unexpectedly to 242,000 for the week ended Dec.
7, above estimates of 220,000.
Trader bets on the cut next week stand at over 98%, according to CME’s FedWatch Tool.
They had risen after a jobs report on Friday that showed unemployment rose last month despite
a surge in jobs growth.
However, bets also indicate expectations of a pause in January after several Fed
officials last week urged caution over the pace of monetary policy easing as the economy remained resilient.
At 9:37 a.m. ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 40.06 points, or 0.09%,
to 44,188.62, the S&P 500 lost 15.55 points, or 0.26%, to
6,068.64 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 95.17 points, or 0.48%, to
19,939.73.
Seven of the 11 major S&P sub-sectors were trading lower, with information technology leading
losses, down 0.6%.
Most megacap and growth stocks trended lower early on, with Nvidia down over 1%.
Wall Street’s main indexes have set new record highs multiple times this year, thanks
to a rally driven by heavyweight tech stocks that have exploited the euphoria around artificial intelligence and the Fed’s interest rate cuts.
U.S. equities capped off a remarkable November after Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election on the prospects of business-friendly policies
adding to corporate profits, and have kicked off December on a broadly positive note.
Among significant movers, Adobe slid 11.2% after the Photoshop maker forecast fiscal 2025 revenue below Wall Street expectations on Wednesday.
Nordson lost 3.6% as the dispensing equipment maker forecast fiscal 2025 revenue below Wall
Street estimates.
Centene gained 1.4% following the health insurer’s forecast of
its 2025 profit above estimates.
Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a 1.62-to-1 ratio on the
NYSE and by a 1.4-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq.
The S&P 500 posted five new 52-week highs and three new
lows, while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 23 new highs and 44 new lows.
