His lawyer (Catherine Keener) strives to show that Joke
is accused of five murders, rather than Arthur. Lee just as
urgently wants him to identify as his demonic alter ego.
In the final scenes, Arthur renounces his Joker alter-ego and is
found guilty of first-degree murder.
As he is being sentenced a car bomb detonates outside the court, with two people helping Arthur escape, but he is later caught
by the police and taken back to Arkham.
In the Asylum a young patient begins to tell Arthur a joke,
before stabbing him in the stomach and while he bleeds to
death, carves a smile into his own face.

as it would seem he never went on to become the famed villain, instead
he was just the person who inspired the man who eventually

upon him, this idea that Gotham people put on him, that he represents.
‘He’s an unwitting icon. This thing was placed on him, and he doesn’t want

The movie serves as a follow-up to Phoenix’s 2019 box office hit, which was simply titled Joker.

Ellen quizzed the rising star on why she had ‘no trace
whatsoever’ of the American accent that she performed in movies.
‘Well, I work really hard on it,’ Naomi explained.
‘It’s a big job. It’s a tool to get you closer to the character.’
‘Do you find that you continue to speak with a different accent afterwards?’ Ellen asked her.
‘Or do you go right back to this?’
‘I tend to go right back to this,’ a young Naomi said in a posh English tone.
After working alongside Kim Kardashian for several months, that appears to have changed.
The Emmy-nominated actress gushed over the Kim’s acting chops earlier this year,
in stark contrast to the vicious swipe she took at the Kardashian clan a decade ago.
‘I love that she’s trying different and new things all the time and seems to do very well at many of them—or all of them,’ Naomi told Vanity Fair.
‘I am impressed by her—wildly impressed. Anyone who works hard deserves major accolades.
She’s clearly a hard working woman.’
Fans were very surprised to learn of the blossoming bond between the
two stars —likely because in 2015 Naomi said the Kardashians’ impact on the
entertainment industry was ‘scary’.
She took aim at how the culture of reality TV celebrity and
famous-for-being-famous stars had diluted the glamour of Hollywood’s leading ladies.
‘There’s so much focus on celebrity these days; we’re in the Kardashian era and it’s slightly scary,’ she said.
‘But when you hear that there are ways to use [your celebrity status] purposefully, it makes you feel good about what you do.
When it’s related to matters that you’re passionate about, it’s easy to get involved when the invitation comes.’
Kim, who wowed audiences with her recent turn in American Horror
Story, was spotted filming with Naomi in Camarillo, California in October.
Murphy’s new series, which centers on an all-female
law firm, boasts an all-star cast, including Naomi, Kim, Sarah Paulson, Niecy Nash, and Teyana Taylor.
Kim is executive producing and her mother Kris Jenner, is playing one of the divorce lawyers.
Ryan Murphy, for his part, appears to be trying to replicate the on-screen magic he conjured up in American Horror Story by writing a character ‘specifically for Kim.’

City native, 38, is releasing a single titled
Disease, set to be released Friday.
Diesase, the first of songs from her forthcoming seventh album, was teased Tuesday on the Grammy-winning artist’s Instagram account, as she captioned the image: ‘DISEASE 10.25.’
In a teaser clip from the viewpoint of an approaching vehicle,
the actress-singer, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, sported a black mane as she ran from it.
Gaga’s label Universal Music on Monday put out pre-saves for the forthcoming single,
with links to Spotify and Apple Music, Variety reported.

There is something reassuringly robust about The Punch
Bowl Inn. Not just in the old-fashioned bar, where the Wainwright Gold is
well kept and a huge leather sofa sits before a blazing wood burner; or in the dining room, solid and comfortable, with its old beams, well-trodden wooden floors and
tables unadorned with cloths; it’s in the menu, too,
mainly British with a Gallic burr, that makes full use of the magnificent local Lake District larder.

We’re here with Peter Gott, that great Cumbrian hero, and the man behind Sillfield Farm, who has invited me up to cook at the Westmorland County Show;
also chef Phil Vickery, who certainty knows his alliums; and the
force of nature that is Lorraine Stanton, something of a legend around these parts.
But first dinner, and a sublime twice-baked Mrs Kirkham’s cheese soufflé, the texture as light
as a sigh, the flavour profoundly, lasciviously rich.
Mrs Kirkham’s, now made by her son Graham, is one of the world’s great cheeses,
and this is a soufflé of quiet majesty. A mushroom soup is equally splendid, managing to be
both light and gutsy, while Stornoway black pudding with bubble and squeak and a deep-fried egg is pure Cumbrian comfort by way of Lewis.
There’s a fundamental generosity here, matched
by assured technical precision. Duck à l’orange sees a plump breast cooked rare, the skin crisp, the sauce
just the right side of bitter. It comes with a fat potato fondant and
cabbage spiked with shards of smoked bacon. I eat rump of lamb, four vast just-pink slices, drenched
in the stickiest, most gloriously intense of gravies; by its side, a
tiny shepherd’s pie, one bite of pure ovine brilliance.
Puddings are every bit as fine: a lemon tart, beautifully
sharp, with damson sorbet (this part of the Lake District is famed for
its damsons); along with a banana soufflé, this time the classic version but ethereal,
served with vanilla ice cream and a pot of sticky-toffee sauce to pour
deep into its molten centre. This is good old-fashioned food, immaculately done,
in the sort of pub designed for lingering. It’s getting late now, and we’ve an early start.
But first, another bottle of wine. Dinners like this are too rare to
be rushed.

people. This sent the wrong kind of message. Male rage! Nihilism!

because we’re working at the Arkham Asylum, and I would turn to one of them and we’d hear this crap and I’d go, ‘What the f*** is this?’ And they’d go, ‘This is going to bomb,
man.’ I go, ‘This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen.’
‘We were talking about it at lunch, and we’d go, ‘What is the plot?
Is there a plot? I don’t know, I think he falls in love with her in the prison?’ It’s not even hate-watchable.
That’s how terrible it is.’
Despite the negative reviews a number of fans of
the sequel took to social media after its release last month to defend the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019
motion picture.
The film debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic box
office, good enough for the weekend’s top spot,
but less than projections, and half that of its predecessor.
Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and
its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature of sequels to
introduce a musical element not present in the first film,
with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.
‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100% as divisive as people are making it out to be.
I love that the film didn’t try to be a traditional sequel, and fully committed to the storytelling they presented.
It never deviated to be a film full of Easter eggs or any
other crowd pleasing aspects.’
Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how it was structured as a meta-exploration of the first
film’s fandom and the musical elements were a lot of fun.’

Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first time
author dreams of – massive amounts of free publicity online,
in newspapers and on TV and radio.
And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack on Aston over what was written in his book,
The Chairman’s Lounge – The Inside Story of how Qantas sold us out.
Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which has led to him being called
‘upgrade Albo’ – and calls for an inquiry, Aston told Daily Mail Australia his book is ‘not a hit job on Anthony Albanese’.
Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’, but
reiterated that the Prime Minister ‘had a direct
line to Alan Joyce’.
The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy on Qantas flights
by personally requesting them from the airline’s then CEO Mr Joyce – which the Prime Minister has categorically denied.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of the 22
flights Mr Albanese got upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu.
But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose
to shoot the messenger and, in turn, shot himself in the foot.
He said Aston was using the accusations to sell
books and said he was hiding his employment history.
‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal Party staffer…
I don’t see declarations he’s a former Qantas employee,’ the Prime Minister said.
But before the book even gets to the contents page there
is a photo of Aston that refers to him as the then-Qantas corporate communications senior adviser.

that he worked for then-Liberal MP Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney seat
of Cook before Scott Morrison.
‘My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed,
it’s in the first line of the first page of the book,’ Aston said on Tuesday night,
just before his book launch.
Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese’s response gave the book, Aston was still ‘staggered’ at the untrue claims about him the Prime Minister made.
‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this many times with public figures and leaders who struggle to see their
own part in it, the terrible circumstances that they create,’ he said.

his credibility has led to calls for him to resign.
Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though.

‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a
long time and that kind of behaviour is quite normalised to him, is what I’ve seen.
‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at
the front row of the Australian Open Tennis.
‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every year for 12 years and he was
the only Prime Minister (I saw there).
‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the front
row of the International Grand Slam. He’s
the first Prime Minister who I’ve ever seen do that.
‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it looks
like to others when he’s on the gravy train. And I think (the claims
in the book are) just another example of that.’
In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s travel to be booked
in economy, then someone in their office phones the airline and
asks if their flight can be upgraded.
The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he had a
very direct line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.
‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where it’s in the booking
and if the seat’s empty when the flight closes, you’ll get upgraded.
‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where the ticket is converted and you are guaranteed.
You’re not going to the airport crossing your fingers going «Geez, I hope there is a spare seat».
‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat and the only person at Qantas who can issue those types
of upgrades is the CEO. No other executive can do that.
‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades (for Anthony Albanese).’
Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes during
his time as a travel journalist, and understands the attraction for
politicians to get up there.
‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too. Once you’ve experienced
the front of the plane, it’s very hard to go back.
‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff and they’ve got chauffeured cars and
they fly in business, but they don’t get paid like CEOs
…
‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford to go flying around in the front of
the plane on personal travel.
‘A normal person would say «Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’
Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.
But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events.
Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.
‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

The song was originally released in 1950 and its title translates into English
as ‘Hymn to Love.’
The My Heart Will Go On songstress looked to be on the
verge of tears as she finished the performance to cheers from the crowd, whilst viewers at home were
also left emotional.

Russell Crowe has argued that the rise of independent politicians are better representing the views of everyday
Australians, unlike the two-party-dominated system in the United States.
The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response to podcast
host Joe Rogan complaining that Americans
were ‘completely trapped in the two-party system’.
‘We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very interesting thing
that’s happening in Australia at the moment, which is the rise of independents,’ Crowe countered.
‘The main parties have to deal with the fact those independents have to bring a non-party-line
series of points to the argument.
‘And it’s working well. It’s working for us. In that it’s making
both of the main parties re-examine who they are and what they stand for.
Rogan mused ‘we could use that here, for sure’, highlighting how US politics is completely dominated by the Democrat and Republican parties.
There are other parties, including the Green, Libertarian,
and Reform parties, but these receive vanishingly few
votes in comparison.
Independent candidates can also stand and have been known to perform well on occasion.

Civil rights opponent George Wallace ran a third-party campaign in the 1968 US election which saw him garner 10 million votes and take
five southern states, while another disaffected Democrat, Strom Thurmond,
in 1948 carried four southern states on a similarly racist platform but with
only a million votes.
The nephew of a president, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was poised to get on the ballot in dozens of states as
an independent candidate before he pulled out and backed Republican Donald Trump.
He has now been appointed Health secretary in Trump’s incoming cabinet.
Trump himself had previously belonged to the Reform
Party.
The former New York property developer had
even considered running for president in the 2000 election under
the banner of that movement – formed by former third-party presidential
candidate Ross Perot, who won 19 per cent of the popular vote in 1992 but gained no
electoral college votes.
Perot was the most popular minority party candidate
since former Republican president Teddy Roosevelt in 1912 ran as
the Bull Moose Party candidate – carrying six states including California and coming second ahead
of Republican William Taft.
Australia has seen a rise in recent years of nominally independent
politicians who have taken votes away from the two traditional parties of Labor and the Liberal-National coalition
This situation is helped by a strong Green party who now
have 12 senators and four members in the House of Representatives.

Meanwhile, independent candidates who run on strong climate platforms but are fiscally conservative have been labelled ‘teal’ candidates.
This is because they have combined their ‘green’ views on climate with the
traditional ‘blue’ approach of the centre-right Liberal Party on economics.
Zali Steggall became the first teal independent
to achieve huge success when she ousted former prime minister
Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019 election.
In similar fashion, Monique Ryan won the traditionally Liberal seat
from former treasurer Josh Frydenberg at the 2022 election.
She was one of seven teals elected, swelling the lower house crossbench to 16, with this tally including the four Greens, three conservative independents and progressives Andrew Wilkie and Helen Haines.
Crowe’s three-hour conversation with Rogan, which was first aired in August,
has recently resurfaced in teal social media adverts.
They are being pushed by Melbourne philanthropist Simon Holmes à Court,
who founded Climate 200, which has given campaign funding to some teal candidates.
Not all the 12 independents elected in 2022 were teals, however.

Dai Lee, a former state Liberal candidate, defeated former Labor frontbencher and former NSW Labor premier
Kristina Keneally in the south-west Sydney seat of Fowler.
And, of course, maverick Bob Katter who has
just celebrated 50 years in parliament, spending 20 years
as a Queensland state MP before serving the past three decades in federal parliament as the
MP for the regional far north Queensland electorate of Kennedy.
Among his many mad-hat policies over the years include a bid
to teach school kids how to fire rifles and a desire to build a missile shield across
northern Australia.
The House of Representatives crossbench grew to 17 in late 2022 when Andrew Gee quit the
Nationals in protest at its opposition to the Indigenous Voice to Parliament.
The Greens and independents make up 11 per cent of the 151-member
lower house – the highest proportion of non major party MPs
since Federation in 1901.

Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is at the heart
of their reason for entering Parliament in the first place hear
themselves?
In the past few days they have mounted self-serving
arguments against proposed electoral reforms that the major parties look
set to come together to support.
The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate, caps on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to prevent the equivalent of an arms race,
and a $90million limit on what any party can spend at
an election – actually less than the major parties currently spend.
The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for
donations, thus increasing the transparency of who makes political donations in the first place.
So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their cash
to influence election outcomes – and the extent to which they can use their wealth at all will be limited.
The bill will further improve transparency by also
increasing the speed and frequency that disclosures of
donations need to be made.
At present we have the absurd situation in which donations
get made – but you only find out the details of who has given what to whom many months later, well after elections are won and lost.
In other words, what is broadly being proposed
will result in much greater transparency and far less big money being injected into campaigning by the wealthy.

with the policy and warned the reform would ‘not stop the rot’

Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party,
as opposed to $16,000 under the current rules, will need to
disclose having done so. And how much they can donate will be capped.
Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed new laws, labeling them a ‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not a reform’.
They have lost their collective minds after finding out that Labor’s proposal just might secure
the support of the opposition.
I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write this column.
Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency measures stamping out the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or
the corruption-fighting Teals, in a united crossbench effort to drag
the major parties closer to accountability.
More fool me.
The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system,
is being put forward by Labor and is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.
It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply, the
Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.
Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political
donors such as Clive Palmer
Another potential target of the laws is businessman and Teal funder Simon Holmes
à Court
The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to
tighten donations rules (Greens leader Adam Bandt and Senator Mehreen Faruqi are pictured)
The major parties have long complained about the influence the likes of Simon Holmes à Court
wields behind the scenes amongst the Teals.
And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the wealthy in the past, contrary to
their irregular calls to tighten donations rules.
Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are running a mile from reforms that will
curtail dark art of political donations.
The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to take effect immediately, by the way.
It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power play before the next election designed to catch the crossbench out.
They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough time to absorb and understand the
changes before preparing for them.
Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor
and the Coalition. I imagine the opposition want to go over the laws with a fine tooth comb.
As they should – because it certainly isn’t
beyond Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which would create loopholes only the unions are capable of taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the years to come.
But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a
deal to get these proposed laws implemented, the crossbench should offer
their support, not cynical opposition, to what is being advocated for.
They might even be able to offer something
worthwhile that could be incorporated in the package.
To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard
false commentary about being in politics to ‘clean things up’.

The partner of the ex-CEO of the Abercrombie and Fitch clothing line pleaded not
guilty Tuesday in US federal court to charges of sex trafficking
and interstate prostitution and was released on $10 million bond.
Briton Matthew Smith, the ex-CEO Mike Jeffries and their fixer
James Jacobson allegedly used a «casting couch» ploy to groom
aspiring male models to attend sex parties at which victims were plied with
alcohol and drugs.
After his arrest in October in Florida with Jeffries,
Smith was held in custody in New York. Smith appeared in court Tuesday in Central Islip
on Long Island, to the east of New York City.
Smith pleaded not guilty and was released on a $10 million bond put up by
Jeffries and his family, said a statement from the US attorney’s office for the eastern district of New York.
An AFP photographer saw Smith leave the courthouse with what appeared
to be a large electronic surveillance bracelet attached
to his ankle.

Another hearing is scheduled for December 10 for Smith,
Jeffries and Jacobson.
Jeffries, 80, was released on a $10 million bond in late October.
Jeffries, who served as CEO of Abercrombie and Fitch from 1992 to 2014,
is accused of creating and maintaining a ring that recruited young men to have sex with him
and Smith.
Prosecutors allege that between December 2008 and
March 2015 Jeffries, Smith and Jacobson used a combination of «force, fraud and coercion» to traffic men in a sprawling prostitution enterprise.
Charging documents detail 15 anonymous victims, but prosecutors
suggest the scale was probably much larger and
have appealed for witnesses and victims to come forward.
Prosecutors say young men were taken to the New York home of Jeffries and Smith and to hotels in Britain, France,
Italy, Morocco to have sex with them.
Jeffries faces the prospect of life in prison if convicted.
Jacobson also pleaded not guilty to the same charges as the other defendants and
was released on half a million dollars bond in October.
