Memoria de San Alfonso María de Ligorio, obispo y doctor de la Iglesia
Primera lectura
Jer 26, 11-16. 24
En aquellos días, los sacerdotes y los profetas dijeron a los jefes y al pueblo: “Ese hombre, Jeremías, merece la muerte, porque ha profetizado contra esta ciudad, como ustedes mismos lo han oído”.
Pero Jeremías les dijo a los jefes y al pueblo: “El Señor me ha enviado a profetizar todo lo que han oído contra este templo y esta ciudad. Pues bien, corrijan su conducta y sus obras, escuchen la voz del Señor, su Dios, y el Señor se retractará de la amenaza que ha pronunciado contra ustedes. Por mi parte, yo estoy en manos de ustedes: hagan de mí lo que les parezca justo y conveniente. Pero sépanlo bien: si me matan, ustedes, la ciudad y sus habitantes serán responsables de la muerte de un inocente, porque es cierto que el Señor me ha enviado a ustedes para anunciarles todas estas cosas”.
Los jefes y todo el pueblo dijeron a los sacerdotes y a los profetas: “Este hombre no merece sentencia de muerte, porque nos ha hablado en nombre del Señor, nuestro Dios”.
Entonces Ajicam, hijo de Safán, defendió a Jeremías, para que no fuera entregado en manos del pueblo y lo mataran.

En aquel tiempo, el rey Herodes oyó lo que contaban de Jesús y les dijo a sus cortesanos: “Es Juan el Bautista, que ha resucitado de entre los muertos y por eso actúan en él fuerzas milagrosas”.
Herodes había apresado a Juan y lo había encadenado en la cárcel por causa de Herodías, la mujer de su hermano Filipo, pues Juan le decía a Herodes que no le estaba permitido tenerla por mujer. Y aunque quería quitarle la vida, le tenía miedo a la gente, porque creían que Juan era un profeta.
Pero llegó el cumpleaños de Herodes, y la hija de Herodías bailó delante de todos y le gustó tanto a Herodes, que juró darle lo que le pidiera. Ella, aconsejada por su madre, le dijo: “Dame, sobre esta bandeja, la cabeza de Juan el Bautista”.
El rey se entristeció, pero a causa de su juramento y por no quedar mal con los invitados, ordenó que se la dieran; y entonces mandó degollar a Juan en la cárcel. Trajeron, pues, la cabeza en una bandeja, se la entregaron a la joven y ella se la llevó a su madre.
Después vinieron los discípulos de Juan, recogieron el cuerpo, lo sepultaron, y luego fueron a avisarle a Jesús.

60 El pueblo nacido de Abraham será el depositario de la promesa hecha a los patriarcas, el pueblo de la elección (cf. Rm 11,28), llamado a preparar la reunión un día de todos los hijos de Dios en la unidad de la Iglesia (cf. Jn 11,52; 10,16); ese pueblo será la raíz en la que serán injertados los paganos hechos creyentes (cf. Rm 11,17-18.24).
