Russell Crowe has argued that the rise of independent politicians are better representing the views of everyday Australians, unlike the two-party-dominated system in the United States.
The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response to podcast host Joe Rogan complaining that Americans were ‘completely trapped in the two-party system’.
‘We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very
interesting thing that’s happening in Australia at the moment, which is the rise of independents,’ Crowe countered.
‘The main parties have to deal with the fact those independents have to bring a non-party-line
series of points to the argument.
‘And it’s working well. It’s working for us. In that it’s making
both of the main parties re-examine who they are and what they stand for.
Rogan mused ‘we could use that here, for sure’, highlighting how US politics is completely dominated by the Democrat and Republican parties.
There are other parties, including the Green, Libertarian, and Reform parties,
but these receive vanishingly few votes in comparison.
Independent candidates can also stand and have been known to
perform well on occasion.

Civil rights opponent George Wallace ran a third-party campaign in the 1968 US election which saw him garner 10 million votes and
take five southern states, while another disaffected Democrat,
Strom Thurmond, in 1948 carried four southern states on a similarly
racist platform but with only a million votes.
The nephew of a president, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was poised to get on the ballot in dozens of states as
an independent candidate before he pulled out
and backed Republican Donald Trump.
He has now been appointed Health secretary in Trump’s incoming cabinet.
Trump himself had previously belonged to the Reform Party.
The former New York property developer had even considered running for
president in the 2000 election under the banner of that movement – formed by former third-party
presidential candidate Ross Perot, who won 19
per cent of the popular vote in 1992 but gained no electoral college votes.
Perot was the most popular minority party candidate since former Republican president Teddy Roosevelt in 1912 ran as the
Bull Moose Party candidate – carrying six states including California and coming second ahead of Republican William Taft.
Australia has seen a rise in recent years of nominally independent politicians who
have taken votes away from the two traditional parties of Labor and the Liberal-National coalition
This situation is helped by a strong Green party who now have 12 senators and four members in the House of Representatives.
Zali Steggall (pictured) became the first Teal independent to achieve huge
success when she ousted former prime minister Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019 election
Meanwhile, independent candidates who run on strong climate platforms but are fiscally conservative have been labelled ‘teal’ candidates.
This is because they have combined their ‘green’ views on climate with the traditional ‘blue’ approach of the centre-right Liberal Party.
Zali Steggall became the first Teal independent to achieve huge success when she ousted former
prime minister Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019
election.
In similar fashion, Monique Ryan won the traditionally
Liberal seat from former treasurer Josh Frydenberg at
the 2022 election.
She was one of seven Teals elected, swelling the lower house crossbench to 15,
with this tally including the four Greens, three conservative independents and progressive Andrew Wilkie.
Crowe’s three-hour conversation with Rogan, which was first aired in August, has recently
resurfaced in Teal social media adverts.
They are being pushed by Melbourne philanthropist Simon Holmes à Court, who founded Climate
200, which has given campaign funding to some Teal candidates.
Not all independents elected in 2022 were Teals, however.

familiar with director Todd Phillips’ process telling Variety

A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it
makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide. Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’
In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does not include
a DC Studios logo.
A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at
the end of the Joker sequel, while Phillips declined to comment
to the publication.
Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips,
DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner
Bros. Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to Phillips due to
his huge past successes.
It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC two months before production began on Joker
2 in December 2022.

screening for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter: ‘With

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles
if the director would make the sequel at a lower price point.’

A source directly involved with the film recently shared: ‘The one thing about genre stuff:
If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static.
A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the decision to film in Los Angeles’.

Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere the film at the Venice Film Festival, but Phillips

The cost for one of London’s most pricey apartments will begin at £35million – with 600 megarich customers already securing
a spot on the waiting list.
Pricing details of billionaire John Caudwell’s spectacular 1 Mayfair development have now been revealed and only those with
the deepest pockets can hope to afford one of the lavish
pads.
The cheapest apartment on offer is expected to be an eye-watering
£35million – around 70 times the average cost of a house in the capital.
Due to complete in Spring 2026 the scheme will easily surpass London’s previous record breaker, the
£1.3billion One Hyde Park development in Knightsbridge.
Caudwell told The Standard that there are already more than 600 prospective buyers on a
waiting list of billionaires and centi-millionaires who have expressed an interest in making
a purchase at the scheme.
There will be just 24 ‘principal residences’ in the
property including lateral apartments, penthouses and townhouses with up to five bedrooms,
and five more smaller ‘pieds-à-terre’ apartments.
The size of the homes has not yet been disclosed but the developers say even the most modest property will start with a guide price exceeded by
only a handful of mansions in London’s richest neighbourhoods.
The average price of all 29 units – which cover 300,000 sq ft –
will be close to £70million.

The entry level price of £35million is 70 times the average London property value of around £500,
000, and 130 times the national average price of £268,000 revealed in today’s Nationwide house price survey for November.
The development’s basement is being dug down to 90ft
below ground level to make room for a health spa with a 20 metre swimming pool as well as
a car park.
The designs were led by New York based architect Robert Stern and
practice RAMSA, with contractors, Mace, the construction managers
and PJ Carey responsible for the creation of the basement substructure and superstructure.
Due to complete in Spring 2026 after a six years build the scheme will easily surpass London’s previous
record breaker, the £1.3billion One Hyde Park development in Knightsbridge.

Caudwell – who founded the mobile phones retailers Phones 4u – attended the topping out of 1 Mayfair alongside senior members of the construction team.
The ceremony was marked by the final steel rafter, one of 79 at
roof level, being put into place on the top of the nine-storey main apartment building.
No expense has been spared on the building’s interior and it will feature a ceiling with hand-painted frescos based on Michelangelo’s Map of the Heavens
in the Vatican, a reception room with a double height ceiling and
18ft high French windows overlooking the garden.
There will also be a Palace of Versailles Hall of Mirrors-style crystal callery,
created from over 1,264 hand-set pieces of cut glass,
a library and a garden gallery, with seating areas opening
directly onto the central courtyard garden.

fled the UK and are believed to be in Moscow, their neighbours and friends
have told MailOnline.
Fawaz Akhras, a renowned cardiologist, and Sahar Akhras,
a retired diplomat, are the parents of Asma Al Assad, who married the deposed Syrian dictator
in 2000 when he was studying in London.
The couple live in a smart, modest home in North Acton, west
London where they raised Asma before she went on to live a life of
opulence as the Syrian First Lady while her husband waged a campaign of terror to suppress
his political opponents.
The owner of a Syrian supermarket in Acton, who knows Mr
Akhras but did not wish to be named told
MailOnline: ‘I saw him about ten days ago
and he said he was going abroad for a while and that his wife was already out
of the country.
‘He didn’t say where but there is a large Syrian community in Acton and the word is that he and his
wife have gone to Moscow to console their daughter
and son-in-law.
‘It doesn’t surprise us because they are a close family and they’ve always supported
their daughter.’
One neighbour, who has known the family for 30 years but did not want
to reveal her name, said that the property had been empty for the past week
and that Mr Akhras and his wife have likely flown to Russia to meet
their daughter and her family.
She added: ‘The house is empty and we’ve heard that they are abroad.
They are usually around but keep a low profile because there are
a lot of Syrians living around here.’

The Kremlin has confirmed that Al Assad, Asma and
their three children were given asylum on the direct orders of
Vladimir Putin after fleeing Syria.
The west London suburb of Acton has one of the capital’s largest Syrian communities and many had gathered
in a local coffee shop to discuss events in the country.
One man, Tariq, said: ‘We all know that Asma’s parents live in Acton,
but we don’t bother them because it’s not
their fault that their son in law was such a brutal tyrant.
And we also don’t want to do anything illegal
in this country.
‘We’ve heard that they have left the UK for now, partly for their own safety and because they want to be with their daughter.’
Meanwhile Abdel, who said that his father knows Mr Akhras, added: ‘He (Mr Akhras) and his
wife are not in the UK. They’re probably with their daughter comforting her and helping to spend all
the money they’ve stolen from the Syrian people.’
Mr and Mrs Akhras raised their daughter Asma in their
terraced house, which is worth £1million today.
Born in 1975, Asma enjoyed a gilded childhood before
carving out a successful career in international banking.
On the face of it, she was destined for a glamorous career,
having been raised by her hard-working Syrian parents.

She then moved to the investment bank JP Morgan and worked in Paris and New
York, as well as London. On family holidays back in Syria, she met Bashar.
Then he, too, came to London to study ophthalmology, though he had to leave early to
return to Syria after his elder brother’s death.
Asma started seeing him in secret, resigning from JP Morgan just
a month before the wedding without being able to explain the real reason.
As she told American Vogue, her boss couldn’t believe her timing,
as she quit after closing a major deal and two months before her bonus was due.
She said: ‘He thought I was having a nervous breakdown because nobody quits two months before bonus-time after closing a
really big deal.
‘He couldn’t accept my resignation. I was like: ‘Please, I just want to get out, I’ve had enough.’ And he
[said]: ‘Don’t worry, take time off, it happens to the best of us.’ ‘

But that year, war broke out in Syria between rebels and Assad’s regime

The gushing profile, published as Assad began terrorising his
own people, was met with a wave of criticism and both Buck and Vogue’s editor, Anna
Wintour, were accused of pushing a public relations campaign on the regime’s behalf, reported The

In June 2012, Wintour issued a statement about the feature, saying, via The New York Times: ‘Like many at that time, we
were hopeful that the Assad regime would be open to
a more progressive society.
‘Subsequent to our interview, as the terrible events of the past year and a half unfolded in Syria, it
became clear that its priorities and values were completely at odds with those of Vogue.
‘The escalating atrocities in Syria are unconscionable and we deplore the actions of the Assad regime in the strongest
possible terms.’
During the conflict the couple are understood to have drifted apart, but with Assad’s mother dying in 2016
and Mrs Assad’s diagnosis of breast cancer in 2018, she was repositioned at the heart of the regime’s economy.
But this new role was nothing more than a ‘shakedown’ operation of the country’s middle class merchants and businessmen.
She orchestrated a secretive labyrinth of committees and policies, run by her henchman, which controlled everything from access to the internet to subsided food rations.

in Russia after being granted asylum by Vladimir Putin.
Ms Al-Assad has become accustomed to a life of luxury, with reports that she spent
hundreds of thousands of dollars on home furnishings and clothes during her husband’s reign of terror.
The US state department estimates that the family are worth $2billion, with their wealth concealed
in numerous accounts, shell companies, offshore tax havens and
real estate portfolios.
Now they are likely to draw on their family connections and extensive
assets in Moscow in the hope of keeping up their comfortable lifestyle in exile.
The Syrian dictator’s extended family bought up at least 20 Moscow apartments worth more than £30million in recent years, illustrating Russia’s status as a safe haven for the
clan.
The Kremlin today confirmed that the family was given asylum on the direct orders of
Putin.
Moscow disclosed no further details, with presidential spokesperson Dmitry
Peskov telling reporters today: ‘We have nothing to say about Assad’s whereabouts.’

A billionaire couple have won the right to remove a single tree from the driveway of
their lavish $20million mansion after being blocked by their local council.
Paul Holmes a Court, the son of Australia’s first billionaire Robert Holmes a Court, and his wife Zara had
been at loggerheads with their local council over a request to
remove a single peppermint tree growing in the middle of their
driveway.
The couple bought the four-bedroom mansion in the affluent,
tree-lined suburb overlooking Perth’s Freshwater Bay for
$20.1million in August.
They wanted to remove the tree but the Shire of Peppermint Grove refused the request on the grounds the
tree was not dead or deceased.
‘We are very lucky to live here, but I have to say that the tree placement is unusual,’ Ms Holmes a Court previously told a council meeting.
‘I’m quite a reasonable and rational person, but a tree in the middle of the driveway makes it quite tricky to
reverse out.’
The couple enjoyed a breakthrough at a council meeting last week after an alternative motion was unanimously passed that allowed the tree to be removed on the condition they
paid a $2,500 bond before any work was done on the driveway.
They will also need to plant two replacement trees on their property.

Ms Holmes a Court previously claimed the tree’s
odd placement also made it difficult to spot cars turning
the corner at a nearby intersection with Bay View Terrace.
After the motion to remove the tree was passed at the meeting, councillor Douglas Jackson said it was
a ‘good outcome’.
‘I think it meets both the owners’ wants, or
expectation, but also matches the council’s needs
at the same time by ensuring that there is tree
cover on the verge of that property,’ he said.
Peppermint Grove is hoping to implement a policy that would even make it an offence to damage or remove any mature trees on private property
without council approval.
Last month, WA Planning Minister John Carey said he hoped the Shire of Peppermint Grove would
‘take a common sense approach’ to the issue.
‘This is part of the challenge that we do have with local government.
I’ve always been on the record that we need local governments to take a common sense approach to issues,’ Mr Carey
told the West Australian.
‘And I understand people are passionate about trees. But ultimately, we do need local
governments to assess the situation and find pragmatic outcomes.’
According to the online listing for the four-bedroom,
four-bathroom mansion – which is built on a corner
block along the banks of the Swan River – the sprawling
Federation-style property was built in around 1904.
