Como un joven sacerdote empezando mi ministerio en Buenos Aires, Argentina, la tierra del Papa Francisco, recuerdo que una vez desafié a una mujer con nobles aspiraciones espirituales diciéndole: «¡Estás llamada a ser santa!».
Recuerdo que su reacción fue de shock y ella casi se cayó de la silla en donde estaba sentada. Esta reacción no es adecuada con respecto a la llamada a la santidad, llegar a ser santos no es raro, ¡y menos entre muy buenos católicos!
¿Por qué les parece tan sorprendente e impactante convertirse en santos? Por la sencilla razón de que la mayoría de las personas tienen un concepto erróneo de santidad.
En una clase de catecismo pedí que me respondieran esta pregunta: «¿Cuántos de ustedes quieren ir a cielo?» Todas las manos se levantaron inmediatamente, ¡sin duda alguna! Entonces, proseguí con otra pregunta: «¿Cuántos de ustedes quieren ser santos?» Y ni una sola mano se levantó.
Entonces les dije la verdad, todos estamos llamados a ser santos porque en el cielo Dios está presente, los ángeles están presentes, la Virgen María está presente, y por ende, para ir a cielo debemos convertirnos en santos.
Existen dos categorías de santos: los canonizados, que han sido oficialmente proclamados santos por el Santo Padre, con milagros atribuidos después de su muerte. Y el resto, que son la gran mayoría, de los santos son los «anónimos», por así decirlo, los «no canonizados», ¡pero aun así son santos!
En este artículo daré algunas pruebas concretas de por qué todos somos llamados a ser santos. La esencia de la santidad es sencilla, un ardiente deseo y decisión de seguir los pasos e imitar a nuestro Señor y Salvador Jesucristo. El Santo de los santos.
ALIMENTADOS CON LA ESENCIA DE LA SANTIDAD
Toda nuestra santidad fluye de la unión con Cristo, la gracia que brota del misterio pascual de Cristo: su Pasión, Muerte y Resurrección, más la imitación de Jesucristo.
Estas gracias fluyen abundantemente a través del Cuerpo Místico de Cristo, la Iglesia y los Sacramentos, especialmente la más sagrada Eucaristía que es verdaderamente el Cuerpo, Sangre, Alma y Divinidad de Nuestro Señor y Salvador Jesucristo.
Todas las virtudes que constituyen la esencia de la santidad están verdaderamente presentes en cada hostia, consagrada por el mismo Jesús.
JESUS NOS ORDENA SER SANTOS
Otras pruebas para la llamada universal a la santidad es el Sermón del Monte, en una de las Bienaventuranzas, Jesús nos desafía a desear la santidad, con estas palabras: «Bienaventurados los que tienen hambre y sed de justicia (santidad), porque ellos serán saciados» (Mateo 5,6) En el mismo contexto del Sermón del El Monte, Jesús lanza una orden, en el tiempo imperativo de nuestra obligación de Santos, afirmando:
«Sean santos, así como su Padre celestial es santo» (Mateo 5,48)
Este no es el tiempo condicional, pero es un IMPERATIVO, es decir, ¡Jesús nos ordena ser santos!
UN LLAMADO UNIVERSAL.
Madre Teresa de Calcuta reafirma este compromiso en estas palabras potentemente inequívocas: «La santidad no es el privilegio de unos pocos, es el deber de todos». La misma santa insistió en que cualquier mujer joven que quisiera entrar en el convento para ser una futura misionera de la caridad, tenía que tener un ardiente deseo de convertirse en un santa.
Por último, uno de los documentos del Vaticano II, la Constitución Dogmática, titulada «Lumen Gentium», no es otra cosa que «El llamado universal a santidad».
Esto significa que la santidad no es sólo para un grupo selecto de individuos de élite, es universal. Lo que significa que todos somos llamados a convertirnos en santos.
Ruego a Nuestra Señora, la Santa Madre de Dios, para que todos tengamos un anhelo sincero de convertirnos en santos y podamos implementar las palabras de Jesús: «Sean santos, así como su Padre celestial es santo».
