Russell Crowe has argued that the rise of independent politicians are better representing the views of everyday Australians, unlike the
two-party-dominated system in the United States.
The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response to podcast host Joe Rogan complaining that Americans were ‘completely
trapped in the two-party system’.
‘We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very interesting thing
that’s happening in Australia at the moment, which is the rise of independents,’ Crowe countered.
‘The main parties have to deal with the fact those
independents have to bring a non-party-line series of points to the argument.
‘And it’s working well. It’s working for us. In that it’s making both of the main parties
re-examine who they are and what they stand for.
Rogan mused ‘we could use that here, for sure’, highlighting how US
politics is completely dominated by the Democrat and Republican parties.
There are other parties, including the Green, Libertarian, and Reform parties, but these receive vanishingly few votes in comparison.
Independent candidates can also stand and have been known to perform well on occasion.

Civil rights opponent George Wallace ran a third-party campaign in the 1968 US election which saw him garner 10 million votes and take five southern states, while another
disaffected Democrat, Strom Thurmond, in 1948 carried four southern states on a similarly
racist platform but with only a million votes.
The nephew of a president, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was poised to get on the
ballot in dozens of states as an independent candidate before he pulled out and backed Republican Donald Trump.
He has now been appointed Health secretary in Trump’s incoming cabinet.
Trump himself had previously belonged to the Reform Party.
The former New York property developer had even considered running for president in the 2000 election under the banner of that movement – formed by former third-party presidential
candidate Ross Perot, who won 19 per cent of
the popular vote in 1992 but gained no electoral college votes.
Australia, by contrast, has seen a rise in recent years of nominally independent
politicians who have taken votes away from the two traditional parties of Labor and the Liberal-National coalition
This situation is helped by a strong Green party who now
have 12 senators and four members in the House
of Representatives.
Meanwhile, independent candidates who run on strong climate platforms but
are fiscally conservative have been labelled ‘teal’ candidates.
This is because they have combined their ‘green’ views on climate
with the traditional ‘blue’ fiscal approach of the centre-right
Liberal party.
Zali Steggall became the first Teal independent to achieve huge success
when she ousted former prime minister Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019 election.

Crowe’s three-hour conversation with Rogan, which was first aired in August, has recently resurfaced in Teal social media
adverts.
They are being pushed by Melbourne philanthropist Simon Holmes à
Court, who founded Climate 200, which has given campaign funding
to some Teal candidates.
Not all independents are Teals, however.
There is Dai Lee defeated the former Labor frontbencher and
former NSW premier Kristina Keneally in the Sydney seat of Fowler.
And, of course, maverick Bob Katter who has just celebrated 50 years in parliament, spending 20 years as a Queensland state MP before serving the past three
decades in federal parliament as the MP for the regional far north Queensland electorate of Kennedy.
Among his many mad-hat policies over the years include a bid to teach school kids how to fire rifles and a desire to build a missile shield across northern Australia.

Following her panned performance in the flop movie Joker:
Folie à Deux, the New York City native, 38, is releasing a single titled Disease, set to be
released Friday.
Diesase, the first of songs from her forthcoming seventh album, was teased Tuesday on the Grammy-winning artist’s

Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and
integrity is at the heart of their reason for entering Parliament in the first place hear themselves?
In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against proposed electoral reforms that the major parties look set to come together to support.
The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy
individuals can donate, caps on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to
prevent the equivalent of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what any
party can spend at an election – actually less than the major parties currently spend.
The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations, thus increasing
the transparency of who makes political donations in the first
place.
So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their cash to influence election outcomes – and the
extent to which they can use their wealth at all will be limited.
The bill will further improve transparency by
also increasing the speed and frequency that disclosures of donations need to be made.
At present we have the absurd situation in which donations
get made – but you only find out the details of who has given what
to whom many months later, well after elections are won and lost.
In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much greater
transparency and far less big money being injected into
campaigning by the wealthy.
Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running
scared’ with the policy and warned the reform would ‘not stop
the rot’
Greens senate leader Larissa Waters (left) fired a warning
shot – saying if it serves only the major parties ‘it’s a rort, not reform’. Teal independent ACT senator David Pocock (right) said: ‘What seems to
be happening is a major-party stitch-up’
Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to $16,000 under the current rules, will need to disclose having done so.
And how much they can donate will be capped.
Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed new laws, labeling them a
‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not a reform’.
They have lost their collective minds after finding out that Labor’s proposal just might secure the
support of the opposition.
I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write
this column.
Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency measures stamping out the influence
of the wealthy must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals, in a united crossbench effort to drag the major parties closer to
accountability.
More fool me.
The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put forward by Labor
and is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.
It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply, the Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.
Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors such as Clive Palmer
Another potential target of the laws is businessman and Teal funder Simon Holmes à Court
The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary to their irregular
calls to tighten donations rules (Greens leader Adam Bandt and Senator Mehreen Faruqi are pictured)
The major parties have long complained about the influence the likes
of Simon Holmes à Court wields behind the scenes amongst the Teals.
And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the wealthy in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules.
Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are running a mile from reforms that will curtail
dark art of political donations.
The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to take effect immediately, by the way.
It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power play before
the next election designed to catch the crossbench out.
They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough
time to absorb and understand the changes before preparing for them.
Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and
the Coalition. I imagine the opposition want to go over the
laws with a fine tooth comb.
As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond
Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which
would create loopholes only the unions are capable of taking
advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the years
to come.
But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get these proposed laws implemented,
the crossbench should offer their support, not cynical opposition, to what is being advocated for.
They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could be incorporated
in the package.
To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and
blowhard false commentary about being in politics to ‘clean things up’.
There is something reassuringly robust about The Punch Bowl Inn.
Not just in the old-fashioned bar, where the Wainwright Gold is well kept
and a huge leather sofa sits before a blazing wood burner; or in the dining room, solid and comfortable, with
its old beams, well-trodden wooden floors and tables unadorned with cloths;
it’s in the menu, too, mainly British with a Gallic burr, that makes
full use of the magnificent local Lake District larder.

We’re here with Peter Gott, that great Cumbrian hero, and
the man behind Sillfield Farm, who has invited me up to cook at the Westmorland County Show; also chef
Phil Vickery, who certainty knows his alliums; and the force of nature that is Lorraine
Stanton, something of a legend around these parts.
But first dinner, and a sublime twice-baked Mrs Kirkham’s cheese soufflé,
the texture as light as a sigh, the flavour profoundly, lasciviously rich.
Mrs Kirkham’s, now made by her son Graham, is one
of the world’s great cheeses, and this is a soufflé of quiet majesty.
A mushroom soup is equally splendid, managing to be both light and gutsy, while Stornoway black pudding with bubble and squeak and a deep-fried egg is pure Cumbrian comfort
by way of Lewis.
There’s a fundamental generosity here, matched by assured
technical precision. Duck à l’orange sees a plump breast cooked rare,
the skin crisp, the sauce just the right side
of bitter. It comes with a fat potato fondant and cabbage
spiked with shards of smoked bacon. I eat rump of lamb, four vast just-pink
slices, drenched in the stickiest, most gloriously intense of
gravies; by its side, a tiny shepherd’s pie, one bite of pure ovine brilliance.
Puddings are every bit as fine: a lemon tart, beautifully sharp, with damson sorbet (this part of the
Lake District is famed for its damsons); along with a
banana soufflé, this time the classic version but ethereal, served with
vanilla ice cream and a pot of sticky-toffee
sauce to pour deep into its molten centre. This is good old-fashioned food, immaculately done,
in the sort of pub designed for lingering. It’s getting late
now, and we’ve an early start. But first, another bottle of wine.
Dinners like this are too rare to be rushed.

US pop star Lady Gaga has taken on a track known best to Aussies as the opening
theme to the iconic comedy series Kath & Kim.
The song, originally written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley for the 1964 stage musical The Roar Of The Greasepaint
– The Smell Of The Crowd, is performed by Gaga for her film
Joker: Folie à Deux.
To most Australians, it is the bold and brassy version sung
by Gina Riley, who also plays Kimberly Diane ‘Kim’ Craig (née Day) in the legendary comedy.
Before being immortalised in to the fabric of Australian pop culture, thanks to Gina’s rendition, the song had been covered by the likes
of Shirley Bassey in 1968 and Sammy Davis Jr in 1965.
And now, the Born This Way hitmaker has taken a stab at
the track – with the results markedly different to the brassy feel of the Kath & Kim version.
Gaga’s take, which also features on her new album Harlequin, is a much more stripped back that builds to
a crescendo thanks to rocking guitars.
Speaking to Today Extra about the track, Kath & Kim star
Peter Rowsthorn joked that he was ‘constantly’ hounded by the US pop star regarding the track.
‘She’s constantly calling me, so I know she’s a big fan,’ Pete, who play’s Kim’s on-again-off-again husband Brett in the series, said.

‘I said to Gaga, «If you want to do it, it’s up to you. I’m the fifth banana in this thing».’

‘I believe the Gina Riley version, or the «Kim» version, is the better version.’
The Today Show posted a short clip featuring the Gaga’s version over the Kath and Kim title sequence to Instagram and viewers
were quick to issue their shock at the surprising cover version.

While some were quick to point out Shirley Bassey’s famous version, one fan said the

Another did not hold back in their criticism of the Poke Face singer
with: ‘Totally sucks. Another flop of an album from Gaga.
She’ll probably ruin joker sequel too.’
