    Civil rights opponent George Wallace ran a third-party campaign in the 1968
    US election which saw him garner 10 million votes and take five southern states,
    while another disaffected Democrat, Strom Thurmond, in 1948 carried four southern states on a similarly racist platform but
    with only a million votes.

    The nephew of a president, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was poised to get
    on the ballot in dozens of states as an independent candidate before he pulled out and
    backed Republican Donald Trump. 

    He has now been appointed Health secretary in Trump’s incoming
    cabinet. 

    Trump himself had previously belonged to the Reform Party.

    The former New York property developer had even considered running
    for president in the 2000 election under the banner of that movement – formed by former third-party
    presidential candidate Ross Perot, who won 19 per cent of the popular vote in 1992 but gained no electoral college votes.

    Perot was the most popular minority party candidate since
    former Republican president Teddy Roosevelt in 1912 ran as the Bull Moose Party
    candidate – carrying six states including California and coming second ahead
    of Republican William Taft.

    This situation is helped by a strong Green party who now have 12 senators and four
    members in the House of Representatives.

    Zali Steggall became the first teal independent to achieve huge
    success when she ousted former prime minister Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches
    at the 2019 election.

    In similar fashion, Monique Ryan won the traditionally Liberal seat from former treasurer Josh Frydenberg at the 2022 election. 

    She was one of seven teals elected, swelling the lower house crossbench to 16, with this tally including
    the four Greens, three conservative independents and progressives Andrew Wilkie and Helen Haines.

    Crowe’s three-hour conversation with Rogan, which was first aired in August, has recently resurfaced in teal social media
    adverts.

    They are being pushed by Melbourne philanthropist Simon Holmes à Court, who founded Climate 200,
    which has given campaign funding to some teal candidates.

    Not all the 12 independents elected in 2022 were teals, however.

    fire rifles and a desire to build a missile shield across northern Australia.

    The House of Representatives crossbench grew to 17 in late
    2022 when Andrew Gee quit the Nationals in protest at its opposition to the Indigenous
    Voice to Parliament. 

    The Greens and independents make up 11 per cent of the 151-member lower house – the highest proportion of non major party

    the electoral commission extended the vote for a second time,

    reopen, about 60 people showed up on Friday, including Kluivert Muuondjo who

    The 21-year-old student said he had waited in line until 11:00
    pm on Wednesday but left before being able to vote as he had exams the next day.

    Providing, of course, that the bill was on someone else.
    Because caviar, smeared on blinis or piled high on baked potatoes, sure didn’t come cheap.

    There may have been other things on the menu, but no one paid them much heed.
    This was all about lashings of the black stuff.

    Caviar Kaspia’s signature baked potato and caviar: ‘there
    are few better dishes on earth…only the price, at
    just under £150, is ridiculous’

    Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades back.
    And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews, was taken over by Gavin Rankin (who used to be the boss), and transformed into the brilliant Bellamy’s.
    It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand, went quiet.
    Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club in another Mayfair backstreet.
    But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning the
    doors were opened to the great unwashed.

    Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome
    – albeit near empty – dining room, lusciously lavish,
    under the stern gaze of a stern painting of a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by the glare of table lamps,
    indecorously bright, while a loud soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate
    beats throbs in the background. The whole place is scented with gilded
    ennui.

    Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous
    couture. They don’t speak, rather communicate
    entirely via camera phone. Pose, click, check, filter, post.
    Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.

    We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur that tastes far better than it
    ought to. Next door, a large table fills with a glut of the noisily, glossily confident.

    We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such
    effervescent charm and charisma that had she burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’,
    we would have barely blinked. Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as
    parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with butter and sour cream,
    are a study in tuber art. A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar, gently saline, raises
    them to the sublime. Only the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous.
    But there are few better dishes on earth. I’d eat this every
    day if I could. But I can’t. Obviously. That’s the problem with caviar.
    One taste is never enough.

    LUXEMBOURG, Oct 7 (Reuters) – Germany’s economic model is not broken but Europe’s biggest
    economy has lost competitiveness over the past decade, German Finance Minister Christian Lindner said on Monday.

    «We can’t be satisfied with the economic developments in Germany,» he told journalists ahead of a Eurogroup
    meeting.

    The German economy is expected to contract by 0.2% in 2024, an economy ministry
    spokesperson said on Monday, cutting the forecast from a previous projection of 0.3% growth this year.

    If realised, this would be the second consecutive year of contraction for Germany’s economy, which was the weakest among its large euro zone peers last year with a 0.3% decline in gross domestic product.

    Lindner said the government was introducing supply-side measures to
    try to return the economy to growth.

    «After these reforms, Germany will have more competitiveness again,» Lindner said, adding that the growth initiative was
    just a first step for an economic turnaround, «but we have to build on it.»

    AMBITION NEEDED

    Lindner said «ambition» was needed to keep EU public finances in order, or to put them
    back in order where necessary.

    «I can only encourage everyone to implement structural reforms and to make unpopular decisions,» Lindner said.
    «What seems to be unpopular at the moment is the willingness to take responsibility for the next generation and for the stability of the European Union as a whole.»

    Lindner said he could not comment on the French budget plans because he had not
    had the chance to talk with his French colleagues yet, but he would do so on Monday evening.

    «We should all realise that the credibility of public finances vis-à-vis the capital markets is not to be trifled with,» Lindner said.

    «We must credibly reduce our deficits and our debt so that we can continue to finance ourselves well and in a stable manner.»

    from his daughter’s book, Tony admitted he was not shocked by the revelations.

    ‘Am I amazed? Probably not,’ he said.

    ‘I’m sort of trying to take all of this in. After all, its my daughter we’re talking about.

    If it was somebody else, it would be a different story altogether.
    I’d be so excited.

    ‘I’ve been round the block a few times. I understand how these things happen.’

    Another passage in the book revealed a very awkward encounter between Phil’s male flatmate and Jackie’s mother Julie. 

    ‘My mum came over once and when no one answered the door,
    she put her face to the screen to see inside and that flatmate was right there in the living room,
    pants down, w***ing,’ a shocked Tony read.

    The revelations come after Jackie spoke for the first time about her
    years-long battle with drugs which saw her secretly go to rehab at The Betty Ford Clinic in November in 2022.

    During a tearful on-air admission, Jackie said at the height of her addiction, she took around 10-12 Stilnox/Ambien sleeping pills and 24 Panadeine Forte painkillers a day.

    At Mezze, guards would regularly hang prisoners from a fence
    naked and spray water on them during cold nights. The New York Times described how one prisoner
    there was crammed into a tyre and beaten.

    He said an officer once told him that a screaming woman also
    in the prison but out of sight was his mother.
    He counted 19 cellmates who died from disease, torture or neglect in a
    single month.

    Since Assad’s fall, my social media feeds have swelled with images
    of rebels storming prisons, of bewildered prisoners stumbling through opened doors, of crying women blinking in daylight, and a toddler wandering out of an open cell
    door.

    There are scenes of men drilling into steel plates to reveal layers of prisoners wedged
    into the earth in hidden underground cells.

    In one video I cannot get out of my head, a male figure sits upright on a bed, one foot manacled to its end.
    So motionless is he that, after watching it over a dozen times, I still genuinely
    cannot tell if he is a human or a mannequin.

    One asks the cameraman: ‘I have been in prison for ten years.

    What happened?’

    Another man who saw prisoners being freed said some had been there so long they thought former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein – who
    was executed in 2006 – had liberated them.

    Nothing more completely embodied the barbarous sadism of Bashar al-Assad’s regime than his prisons.

    They were both a symbol and a means of the regime’s brutality and
    its oppressive tactics. The result of its systematic campaign to arrest
    anyone it viewed as an enemy – be it protesters, human rights defenders, political dissidents, doctors who treated demonstrators or opposition figures,
    as well as family members of all the above.

    The prisons are, in the end, monuments to state violence and the silencing of opposition. Torture, rape, murder: the state meted them out indiscriminately to
    men, women and children. They are infamous not just in Syria but across
    the Middle East – and the scale of their atrocities is staggering.

    The Syrian Network for Human Rights claims that since the beginning of the Syrian revolution in March 2011,
    over 157,000 people remain under arrest or have been forcibly
    disappeared – including 5,274 children and 10,221 women. It also claims over 15,000 have
    died under torture in that time.

    The sadism is sickening. New footage from inside one of the jails shows
    a body-press, medieval in its barbarity, that seems to have
    been used to break bones and execute prisoners.

    The human rights network documented 72 different methods of
    regime torture. They include electrocuting genitals or hanging weights from them; burning with oil, metal
    rods, gunpowder or flammable pesticides; crushing heads between a wall
    and the prison cell’s door; inserting needles or metal pins into bodies; depriving prisoners of clothes, bathing, toilet
    facilities and so on.

    Sexual violence was endemic. Mariam was repeatedly raped. ‘At midnight, they would take the beautiful girls to
    Colonel Suleiman [Juma, head of the Syrian state security’s Branch 320 in Hama] to rape,’ says the human rights network.

    He and his friends would assault them in a bedroom adjoining his office that was decorated with Assad’s photo.

    They would also splash arak – a potent liquor –
    on the victims.

    As the prisons empty, Syrians everywhere are desperate
    for news of loved ones – many who have been missing for years.

    The so-called ‘Caesar’ files, a collection of over 55,000 photographs smuggled out of Syria in 2013 by a former military police photographer, document the systematic torture and deaths of
    more than 11,000 detainees in Syrian government custody between March 2011 and August 2013.

    It is just a glimpse into the factory-level production of mass murder and torture Syrians
    faced under Assad.

    Perhaps the apotheosis of Assad’s industrial-style brutality
    was Sednaya Prison.

    Located outside Damascus, it sits on a hill and spans 1.4 sq km – equivalent to 184 football stadiums – and is surrounded by
    two minefields. A 2017 Amnesty International
    report found thousands were killed in mass
    hangings in Sednaya, which it labelled a ‘Human Slaughterhouse’.

    Between 20 and 50 people were killed every week, usually on Monday and Wednesday nights.
    Amnesty estimated that between 5,000 and 13,000 people were executed between September
    2011 and December 2015.

    Syrian man, 57, arrested by Assad thugs aged just 18 is FOUND four decades

    Prisoners were sent to a ‘trial’ at one of the two field courts at
    the military police HQ in the al-Qaboun neighbourhood of Damascus.
    These trials would last ‘one to three minutes’ and were no more than a parody
    of due process.

    On execution day, prisoners were told they were
    being transferred to a civilian prison elsewhere but were instead brought to a basement and severely beaten, before
    being transferred to another detention facility inside Sednaya to be hanged.

    Those who survived endured intense suffering. They were blindfolded constantly, able to
    hear the ubiquitous sound of beatings and screams reverberate through vents and pipes.
    So constant was the violence that the prisoners became able to
    distinguish between the sounds of belts and electric cables on flesh, and the difference between bodies being punched,
    kicked or beaten against the wall.

    Some victims were held underground in freezing confinement cells designed for one person with dimensions of 8 ft by 5
    ft, but which held up to 15 at a time.

    And for the condemned of Sednaya the torture hasn’t stopped.
    The Damascus Countryside Governorate has had to go on social media to ask people
    to provide the codes to electronic underground doors to free the ‘more than 100,000 detainees who can be seen on CCTV monitors’.

    Now, though, the prisons are being emptied. And while large numbers of prisoners are innocent opponents of the regime, a contingent
    are radical Islamists. And the potential release of these prisoners, of course, presents a danger to the West.

    Then there is Al-Hawl refugee camp, located in northern Syria, which
    houses around 50,000 prisoners, including British ISIS bride Shamima Begum.
    While the exact number of jihadists within the camp is unclear, reports suggest that
    ISIS exerts significant influence over parts of the camp, using it for indoctrination.

    This part of Syria is run by the Kurdish forces who now fear that
    the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army could advance on to its territory.
    If this happens, it will no longer have the resources to oversee the camp
    – leading to another possible jihadi exodus, many of whom are British and could head our way.

    We must continue to support our Kurdish allies as much as we can.

    For now, however, it is a great day for Syrians who suffered for so long under the tyrannical
    yet hapless Assad, as I discuss in this week’s episode of the Mail’s weekly global
    affairs podcast 90 Seconds To Midnight. After 13 years their revolution is
    finally victorious, let us hope for good.

    Aug 22 (Reuters) – Marlboro maker Altria Group said on Tuesday that its
    subsidiary e-cigarette firm NJOY has filed a complaint against rival Juul Labs
    with the U.S. International Trade Commission,
    seeking a ban on the import and sale of Juul products.

    The move escalates a dispute between the two e-cigarette makers after Juul
    filed a similar patent infringement case against NJOY at the ITC in June.

    Altria once held a 35% stake in Juul, which it purchased for $12.8 billion in 2018.
    Altria exited the agreement earlier this
    year, just days before announcing a purchase of NJOY
    Holdings for about $2.75 billion.

    NJOY said in its filings that Juul products infringe two of its patents, and that it intends to obtain a ban on products including its currently marketed Juul
    device and Juul pods.

    NJOY also sued Juul in Delaware on Tuesday for infringing the same patents, seeking an unspecified amount of damages.

    Juul filed its own patent lawsuits against NJOY and
    Altria at the ITC and in Arizona federal court in June, seeking money damages and a ban on imports
    of NJOY’s Ace vapor device.

    Juul said in a statement on Tuesday that it stands behind its intellectual property and will continue to pursue its infringement claims.

    Altria won more than $95 million from cigarette rival R.J.

    Reynolds in North Carolina federal court last year after a jury found RJR
    infringed other Altria e-cigarette patents.
    RJR won an order blocking imports of Philip Morris International’s IQOS heated-tobacco device,
    which Altria had distributed in the U.S., from the ITC in 2021.
