    menu, but no one paid them much heed. This was all about lashings of the black stuff.

    Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades back.
    And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews, was taken over by Gavin Rankin (who used

    It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand, went quiet.
    Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club
    in another Mayfair backstreet. But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning the doors were opened to the
    great unwashed.

    Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit near empty – dining
    room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze of a stern painting
    of a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by the glare
    of table lamps, indecorously bright, while a loud soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate
    beats throbs in the background. The whole place is scented with
    gilded ennui.

    Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale,
    luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous couture. They don’t speak,
    rather communicate entirely via camera phone. Pose, click, check, filter, post.
    Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.

    We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur that
    tastes far better than it ought to. Next door, a large table fills with
    a glut of the noisily, glossily confident.

    We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent charm
    and charisma that had she burst into an impromptu performance of
    ‘Willkommen’, we would have barely blinked. Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with butter
    and sour cream, are a study in tuber art. A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar, gently saline, raises them to the sublime.
    Only the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous.

    But there are few better dishes on earth. I’d eat this
    every day if I could. But I can’t. Obviously. That’s the problem with caviar.
    One taste is never enough.

    There’s a fundamental generosity here, matched by assured technical precision. Duck à l’orange sees a plump breast cooked rare, the skin crisp, the
    sauce just the right side of bitter. It comes with a fat potato fondant and cabbage spiked with shards of smoked bacon. I eat rump of lamb, four vast just-pink slices, drenched in the stickiest, most gloriously
    intense of gravies; by its side, a tiny shepherd’s pie, one bite of pure ovine
    brilliance.

    Puddings are every bit as fine: a lemon tart, beautifully sharp, with damson sorbet
    (this part of the Lake District is famed for its damsons); along with a banana soufflé, this time the classic version but ethereal, served with vanilla ice
    cream and a pot of sticky-toffee sauce to pour deep into
    its molten centre. This is good old-fashioned food, immaculately
    done, in the sort of pub designed for lingering.
    It’s getting late now, and we’ve an early start.
    But first, another bottle of wine. Dinners like this are too rare to
    be rushed.

    had a budget of between $55 and $70 million. However, the budget increased for Folie À Deux to around $200 million. 

    The 2019 movie garnered praise and positive reviews from both critics and
    audiences – and won the Golden Lion during the 76th Venice International
    Film Festival. 

    Joaquin received an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the Joker (Arthur
    Fleck) – and the film garnered an additional Academy
    Award for Best Original Score. 

    The sequel also screened during the Venice International Film Festival last month in September, where
    it earned a 12-minute standing ovation, per Deadline.

    paid them much heed. This was all about lashings of the black stuff.

    Caviar Kaspia’s signature baked potato and caviar: ‘there are few better
    dishes on earth…only the price, at just under
    £150, is ridiculous’

    Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades
    back. And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews, was taken over by Gavin Rankin (who used to be the boss), and
    transformed into the brilliant Bellamy’s. It prospers to this day.
    Kaspia, on the other hand, went quiet. Until last year, when she
    reopened as a members’ club in another Mayfair
    backstreet. But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow,
    meaning the doors were opened to the great unwashed.

    Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit near empty
    – dining room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze of a
    stern painting of a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up
    by the glare of table lamps, indecorously bright, while
    a loud soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the background.

    The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.

    Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous couture.
    They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone.

    Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate
    waiters hover in the shadows.

    We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur
    that tastes far better than it ought to. Next door, a large table fills with a glut of the noisily,
    glossily confident.

    We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent charm and charisma that had she burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’, we would have barely blinked.
    Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with butter
    and sour cream, are a study in tuber art. A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar, gently saline,
    raises them to the sublime. Only the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous.

    But there are few better dishes on earth. I’d
    eat this every day if I could. But I can’t. Obviously.
    That’s the problem with caviar. One taste is never enough.

    The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response
    to podcast host Joe Rogan  complaining that Americans
    were ‘completely trapped in the two-party system’.

    ‘We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very interesting thing
    that’s happening in Australia at the moment, which is the rise of independents,’ Crowe countered.

    ‘The main parties have to deal with the fact those independents have to bring a
    non-party-line series of points to the argument.

    ‘And it’s working well. It’s working for us. In that it’s making both of
    the main parties re-examine who they are and what they stand for.

    Rogan mused ‘we could use that here, for sure’,
    highlighting how US politics is completely dominated by the Democrat and Republican parties.

    There are other parties, including the Green, Libertarian,
    and Reform parties, but these receive vanishingly few votes in comparison.

    Independent candidates can also stand and have been known to
    perform well on occasion.

    Civil rights opponent George Wallace ran a third-party campaign in the 1968
    US election which saw him garner 10 million votes and
    take five southern states, while another disaffected
    Democrat, Strom Thurmond, in 1948 carried four southern states
    on a similarly racist platform but with only a million votes.

    The nephew of a president, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was poised to get on the ballot
    in dozens of states as an independent candidate before he pulled out and
    backed Republican Donald Trump. 

    He has now been appointed Health secretary in Trump’s incoming cabinet. 

    Trump himself had previously belonged to the Reform Party.

    The former New York property developer had even considered running for president in the 2000 election under
    the banner of that movement – formed by former third-party presidential candidate Ross
    Perot, who won 19 per cent of the popular vote in 1992 but gained
    no electoral college votes.

    Perot was the most popular minority party candidate since former Republican president Teddy Roosevelt
    in 1912 ran as the Bull Moose Party candidate – carrying six states including California and coming second ahead of Republican William Taft.

    Australia has seen a rise in recent years of nominally independent politicians who have taken votes away from the two traditional
    parties of Labor and the Liberal-National coalition

    This situation is helped by a strong Green party who now have 12 senators
    and four members in the House of Representatives. 

    Zali Steggall (pictured) became the first ‘teal’ independent to
    achieve huge success when she ousted former prime minister Tony Abbott
    in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019 election

    Meanwhile, independent candidates who run on strong
    climate platforms but are fiscally conservative have been labelled ‘teal’ candidates.

    This is because they have combined their ‘green’ views on climate with the traditional ‘blue’ approach of the centre-right Liberal
    Party on economics.

    Zali Steggall became the first teal independent to achieve huge success when she ousted former prime minister Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019 election.

    In similar fashion, Monique Ryan won the traditionally
    Liberal seat from former treasurer Josh Frydenberg at the
    2022 election. 

    She was one of seven teals elected, swelling the lower house crossbench to 16, with
    this tally including the four Greens, three conservative independents and progressives Andrew Wilkie and Helen Haines.

    Crowe’s three-hour conversation with Rogan, which was first
    aired in August, has recently resurfaced in teal social media adverts.

    They are being pushed by Melbourne philanthropist Simon Holmes à Court, who founded Climate 200,
    which has given campaign funding to some teal candidates.

    Not all the 12 independents elected in 2022 were teals, however.

    MP before serving the past three decades in federal parliament as the MP for the regional far north Queensland electorate of Kennedy. 

    Among his many mad-hat policies over the years include a bid to teach
    school kids how to fire rifles and a desire to build a missile shield across northern Australia.

    The House of Representatives crossbench grew to
    17 in late 2022 when Andrew Gee quit the Nationals in protest at its opposition to the Indigenous Voice to Parliament. 

    The Greens and independents make up 11 per cent of the 151-member lower house
    – the highest proportion of non major party MPs
    since Federation in 1901.

    LUXEMBOURG, Oct 7 (Reuters) – Germany’s economic model is not broken but Europe’s
    biggest economy has lost competitiveness over the past decade, German Finance Minister Christian Lindner said on Monday.

    «We can’t be satisfied with the economic developments in Germany,»
    he told journalists ahead of a Eurogroup meeting.

    The German economy is expected to contract by 0.2% in 2024, an economy ministry spokesperson said on Monday, cutting the forecast from a previous projection of
    0.3% growth this year.

    If realised, this would be the second consecutive year
    of contraction for Germany’s economy, which was the weakest among its large euro
    zone peers last year with a 0.3% decline in gross domestic product.

    Lindner said the government was introducing
    supply-side measures to try to return the economy to growth.

    «After these reforms, Germany will have more competitiveness again,» Lindner said, adding that the growth initiative
    was just a first step for an economic turnaround,
    «but we have to build on it.»

    AMBITION NEEDED

    Lindner said «ambition» was needed to keep EU public finances in order,
    or to put them back in order where necessary.

    «I can only encourage everyone to implement structural reforms and to make unpopular decisions,» Lindner said.

    «What seems to be unpopular at the moment is the willingness to take responsibility for the next generation and for the stability of the European Union as a whole.»

    Lindner said he could not comment on the French budget plans because
    he had not had the chance to talk with his French colleagues yet, but he would do
    so on Monday evening.

    «We should all realise that the credibility of public finances vis-à-vis the capital markets is not to be trifled with,» Lindner said.

    «We must credibly reduce our deficits and our debt so that we can continue to finance ourselves well and in a stable manner.»

    The highly anticipated Joker sequel hit theaters on Friday, but was almost immediately panned by viewers and critics

    For a few seconds, the two stars sat in silence as they both waited for the other to answer the question.

    ‘Tell them how you feel, Joaquin,’ Lady Gaga, 38,
    said to her costar as she held out a fake microphone in front of him.

    ‘It’s so hard to talk about but I think we feel like we achieved what we set out to do,’ Joaquin, 49, simply stated. 

    Someone on X, formerly Twitter, posted the moment online last week
    and it went viral, gaining more then 437,000 views in a matter of days – and many users took their initial silence as proof that they ‘didn’t like’ the film.

    The internet has been flooded with negative posts
    about the flick ever since it premiered, with one user branding
    it as a ‘bore’ and another claiming it had ‘no plot.’

    Many social media users have also slammed the movie’s
    final scene, which saw main character Arthur Fleck (portrayed by Joaquin) brutally stabbed to death by a fellow inmate.

    This meant that the man that audiences had been watching over the course of the two movies was never
    the Joker at all, but in fact, the infamous villain from the Batman series
    was really just the random inmate who killed Arthur in the
    last moments of the film.

    The shocking twist left numerous viewers unsatisfied, and they took to social media to share their frustration.

    While chatting with Good Morning Britain last week, the two
    stars were asked if the movie turned out to be ‘everything they

    and they took to social media to share their frustration

    ‘The ending made the movie a complete waste,’ one outraged user wrote. 

    ‘The ending was pathetic,’ scathed someone else. ‘WTF you mean no Joker?’ 

    ‘The ending made no sense,’ added another person. 

    ‘That ending? It’s so bad that not only it ruins Joker 2 but also the
    first Joker for the audience,’ read a fourth tweet.

    ‘The Joker had so much potential but that f**king ending ruined everything,’ a fifth said. 

    The Todd Phillips-directed musical serves as a follow-up to the 2019 box office hit, which was simply titled Joker. 

    The first film grossed over $1 billion and at the time was
    the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. It received 11 Oscar nominations – two of which
    it won. 

    The sequel, however, has already been much less successful.
    It had a lackluster $40 million debut at the box office in its first weekend, and has
    a low rating of 33 percent and 31 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

    ‘Undoing much of the goodwill from its predecessor, the sequel convolutes what
    could have been a unique character study into a bloated encore that goes out
    with a whimper,’ reads one review. 

    Another critic wrote, ‘This movie is a disjointed mess and a waste of time.
    It’s just tired, not particularly interesting, but it
    does look good from a production design standpoint.’
