    When asked about about their relationship on Sunday Mr Albanese implied it was purely in a professional capacity,
    having been Transport Minister and shadow transport spokesperson before becoming Prime Minister. 

    ‘He (Joyce) was the CEO of the national airline … I had
    the same relationship with him that I have with John Borghetti
    as the CEO of Virgin,’ Mr Albanese said.

    That assessment was at odds with the many photos showing Mr Albanese and Mr
    Joyce apparently greatly enjoying each other’s
    company. 

    Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce were pictured in high spirits
    on the red carpet at the Qantas 100th Gala Dinner in March last year.

    In photos from the event, Mr Joyce proudly walks
    the red carpet with one arm around the prime minister

    confirm or deny but talked up his relationship with the Prime Minister.

    However, the then Qantas CEO refused to say whether he lobbied the Prime Minister on the controversial decision to lock competitor

    Reports have emerged in a new book Mr Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy from Qantas and he would liaise personally with the former airline boss
    for them. 

    Aston also alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce while in his various
    parliamentary jobs to ask for special upgrades for himself or his family.

    According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese received upgrades for were
    ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu, with some being
    for holidays.

    Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that the London flights was for work purposes and all were ‘declared in the
    appropriate way’.    

    Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has leapt on the accusations describing Mr Albanese
    as being the ‘best friend’ of Mr Joyce. 

    Mr Dutton told Sky News on Monday night it was ‘strange’ Mr Albanese had directly contacted Mr Joyce to request upgrades while holding
    a regulatory position in the transport sector.

    ‘If you’re the Transport Minister and you’re picking up the
    phone to one of the most important stakeholders in the portfolio asking for a free upgrade, then again, I think the Prime Minister would be able to answer those questions more effectively than anyone else because I’m
    not aware of anyone else having done it,’ Mr Dutton said.

    It has since emerged that Ms Haydon also has membership of
    the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge

    The Prime Minister denied frequently asking Mr Joyce for upgrades on Tuesday
    at press conference in the NSW city of Newcastle.

    ‘The only discussions that I can recall with Alan Joyce certainly were not discussed through calls – we discussed the first
    flight from Australia to Dubai on the A380,’ he said.

    ‘I’ve declared everything in accordance with all of the rules.’

    Aston was asked on Monday night by ABC interviewer Sarah Ferguson about how confident he was that Mr Albanese had
    made calls personally to Mr Joyce for upgrades.

    ‘I am very comfortable with my sourcing,’ Aston said.

    Asked whether he thought Mr Albanese had been influenced by Mr Joyce’s lobbying to block UAE airline Qatar domestically Aston said it was ‘implausible’ to think that the Prime Minister’s office had nothing to

    in the hot seat, critics have said the sequel is just a ‘repeat’
    of the first hit but with an added musical twist.

    Most critics have said Todd failed to use Gaga correctly in the movie and claimed she was only bought
    in for the musical aspect of it.

    While the majority of critics say Joker: Folie À Deux didn’t
    live up to expectations, others have dubbed the movie ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant.’ 

    Daily Mail’s Brian Viner commended the move as
    ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant’ but said it lacked any thrill. 

    The Independent’s Geoffrey Macnab said: ‘Today Joker
    is best remembered as one of the most subversive and
    original films of the last decade, while its hugely anticipated
    sequel is just as bleak and formally daring as its predecessor’.

    Meanwhile, the Irish Times’ Donald Clarke gave the
    movie just two stars but credited Phillips’ work for making a sequel following the first
    movie’s $1billion success.

    Financial Times critic Danny Leigh said although Gaga worked hard to
    bump the ratings up in the sequel, Phillips appeared to have no idea what to do with
    her. 

    Giving a three star rating, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw claimed the movie proves ‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitive.’

    During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter,
    Phillips discussed whether he would be interested in making a third Joker film or a movie
    centered around Gaga’s character; Phillips, Gaga and Phoenix seen in September in L.A.

    Chairman’s Lounge memberships as calls grow to refer
    Anthony Albanese over the perks he took from the airline. 

    Gift disclosure logs for the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) leadership positions
    show commissioners are all part of Australia’s ‘most exclusive club’ the Chairman’s Lounge membership extended by invite only by the Qantas chair.

    This has raised concerns over how impartial the body would be when dealing with Qantas
    matters. 

    If Mr Albanese has requested flight upgrades from former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce directly,
    as reported in a new book, he may have fallen foul of the strict Ministerial Code of Conduct which prohibits
    ministers from seeking ‘any kind of benefit’ 

    Commissioner Paul Brereton declared Chairman’s Lounge membership
    in 2023, as did the CEO Philip Reed and deputy commissioners Jaala Hinchcliffe
    and Nicole Rose, Sky News reported on Wednesday.

    A job ad for the Canberra Qantas Chairman’s Lounge sets out the requirements to serve the high and
    mighty

    Applicants must ‘have experience working in a fine dining environment and the ability to work a seven- day rotating roster.

    The claims Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy when booking
    Qantas flight by personally requesting them from Mr Joyce
    are made in a new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston. 

    Aston alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce while
    in his various parliamentary jobs, which included Minister for Transport to ask for special upgrades that only the CEO could dole out for himself or his family.

    According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of
    the 22 flights Mr Albanese received upgrades for were ‘privately
    funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu.

    The book also revealed that as well as son Nathan having a

    Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is at the
    heart of their reason for entering Parliament in the first place
    hear themselves?

    In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against proposed electoral reforms that the major parties look set to come
    together to support.

    The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate, caps
    on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to prevent the equivalent of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what any
    party can spend at an election – actually less than the major parties currently spend.

    The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds
    for donations, thus increasing the transparency of
    who makes political donations in the first place.

    So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their
    cash to influence election outcomes – and the extent to which they can use
    their wealth at all will be limited.

    The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed and frequency that disclosures of donations need
    to be made.

    At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made –
    but you only find out the details of who has given what to whom many
    months later, well after elections are won and lost.

    In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much greater transparency and far less big money being
    injected into campaigning by the wealthy.

    Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’ with the policy and warned the reform would ‘not stop the rot’ 

    Greens senate leader Larissa Waters (left) fired a warning shot –
    saying if it serves only the major parties ‘it’s a rort,
    not reform’. Teal independent ACT senator David Pocock (right) said: ‘What seems to be happening is
    a major-party stitch-up’

    Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed
    to $16,000 under the current rules, will need to disclose having done so.
    And how much they can donate will be capped.

    Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed
    new laws, labeling them a ‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not a reform’. 

    They have lost their collective minds after finding out that Labor’s proposal just might secure the support of the opposition.

    I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write this column.

    Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency measures
    stamping out the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or the
    corruption-fighting Teals, in a united crossbench effort
    to drag the major parties closer to accountability.

    More fool me.

    The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put forward by Labor and is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.

    It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply, the Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.

    Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors such as Clive Palmer

    Another potential target of the laws is businessman and Teal funder Simon Holmes à Court

    The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations

    The major parties have long complained about the influence the likes of Simon Holmes à Court wields behind the scenes amongst the Teals. 

    And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the wealthy in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules.

    Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are running a
    mile from reforms that will curtail dark art of political donations.

    The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to take effect immediately, by the way.
    It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power play before
    the next election designed to catch the crossbench out.

    They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough time to
    absorb and understand the changes before preparing
    for them.

    Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the Coalition. I imagine the opposition want to go over the laws with a
    fine tooth comb.

    As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include
    hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which would create loopholes only
    the unions are capable of taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the years to come.

    But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get these
    proposed laws implemented, the crossbench should offer their support, not cynical opposition, to
    what is being advocated for.

    They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could be
    incorporated in the package.

    To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about being in politics to
    ‘clean things up’.

    LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International (PMI) on Thursday signalled a slower
    than anticipated U.S. roll out of its IQOS heated tobacco device, a choice analysts said was
    positive for its competitors in the short term.

    The New York-listed Marlboro maker also said it aims for more than two thirds
    of its net revenues to come from «smoke-free» products by
    2030, up from 50% in 2025, as it tries to transform its image from
    a cigarette purveyor to a driver of the shift to healthier alternatives.

    Investors have been closely watching IQOS’ entry into the U.S.,
    the world’s largest market for nicotine products,
    and had been expecting it from May 2024 next year.

    Reuters reported on Wednesday that PMI is hiring lobbyists
    across a host of key U.S. states ahead of the launch.

    Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said IQOS would launch in four cities in two
    unnamed U.S. states from 2024, but a national launch would only
    come after PMI receives approval to sell the latest version, known as IQOS ILUMA.

    The company was planning to apply for approval in October and expected it from
    2025, he continued.

    «We need to warm up the tyres,» he said of the initial launch, which
    would help PMI fine tune its approach.

    A national roll-out of ILUMA would follow but in phases, he continued, adding launching in 10 states in the first year would make sense.

    Meaningful traction for PMI’s heated tobacco products in the U.S.
    «now looks delayed until ILUMA,» Owen Bennett, equity analyst at Jefferies, said in a note, adding this was a positive for PMI’s rivals.

    Olczak also signalled that PMI’s push into non-nicotine products was no
    longer a priority. It recently scrapped an ambition for $1 billion in net
    revenues to come from sales of such products by 2025.

    Instead, PMI will focus its resources on IQOS and nicotine
    pouch brand ZYN, Olczak said, adding it had been too optimistic around acceptance of big tobacco companies operating outside of nicotine.

    PMI also announced updated medium-term targets including for revenue and earnings per share, and ambitious volume targets for IQOS and ZYN.

    ZYN and other oral nicotine products in the U.S.
    would help drive an expected $2 billion in revenues there in 2024, even before
    IQOS ILUMA, executives said.

    The in-laws of former Syrian President Bashar Al Assad
    have fled the UK and are believed to be in Moscow, their neighbours and friends have told MailOnline.

    Fawaz Akhras, a renowned cardiologist, and Sahar Akhras, a retired diplomat, are the parents of Asma Al Assad, who married the
    deposed Syrian dictator in 2000 when he was studying in London.

    The couple live in a smart, modest home in North Acton, west London where they raised Asma before she went on to
    live a life of opulence as the Syrian First Lady while her husband waged a campaign of terror to suppress
    his political opponents.

    The owner of a Syrian supermarket in Acton, who knows Mr Akhras but did not wish to be
    named told MailOnline: ‘I saw him about ten days ago and he said he was going
    abroad for a while and that his wife was already out of the country.

    ‘He didn’t say where but there is a large Syrian community in Acton and the
    word is that he and his wife have gone to Moscow to console their daughter and son-in-law. 

    ‘It doesn’t surprise us because they are a
    close family and they’ve always supported their daughter.’

    One neighbour, who has known the family for 30 years but did not want to reveal her name, said that the
    property had been empty for the past week and that
    Mr Akhras and his wife have likely flown to Russia to meet their daughter and her family.

    She added: ‘The house is empty and we’ve heard that they
    are abroad. They are usually around but keep a low profile because there are a lot of Syrians living around
    here.’

    The Kremlin has confirmed that Al Assad, Asma and their three children were given asylum on the direct orders of
    Vladimir Putin after fleeing Syria.

    The west London suburb of Acton has one of the capital’s largest Syrian communities
    and many had gathered in a local coffee shop to
    discuss events in the country.

    One man, Tariq, said: ‘We all know that Asma’s parents live in Acton, but
    we don’t bother them because it’s not their fault that their
    son in law was such a brutal tyrant. And we also don’t want to do anything illegal in this country.

    ‘We’ve heard that they have left the UK for now, partly
    for their own safety and because they want to be with their daughter.’

    Meanwhile Abdel, who said that his father knows
    Mr Akhras, added: ‘He (Mr Akhras) and his wife are
    not in the UK. They’re probably with their daughter comforting her and
    helping to spend all the money they’ve stolen from the Syrian people.’

    Mr and Mrs Akhras raised their daughter Asma in their terraced house, which is worth £1million today. 

    Born in 1975, Asma enjoyed a gilded childhood before carving out a successful career
    in international banking.

    On the face of it, she was destined for a glamorous career, having been raised by her hard-working
    Syrian parents.

    For years Asma was the face of female liberation in the
    Middle East; with her successful career in banking and
    her secular British upbringing

    bonus was due.

    She said: ‘He thought I was having a nervous breakdown because nobody quits two months before bonus-time after closing a really
    big deal.

    ‘He couldn’t accept my resignation. I was like: ‘Please, I just
    want to get out, I’ve had enough.’ And he [said]: ‘Don’t worry, take time off,

    The gushing profile, published as Assad began terrorising
    his own people, was met with a wave of criticism and both Buck and Vogue’s editor, Anna

    saying, via The New York Times: ‘Like many at that time, we were hopeful that the
    Assad regime would be open to a more progressive society.

    The Kremlin today confirmed that the family was given asylum on the direct orders of Putin.

    presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov telling reporters today:

    ‘This is part of the challenge that we do have with local government.
    I’ve always been on the record that we need local governments to take a
    common sense approach to issues,’ Mr Carey told the West Australian. 

    ‘And I understand people are passionate about trees.

    find pragmatic outcomes.’

    According to the online listing for the four-bedroom, four-bathroom mansion – which is
    built on a corner block along the banks of the Swan River
