    To most Australians, it is the bold and brassy version sung by Gina Riley, who also plays Kimberly Diane ‘Kim’ Craig (née Day) in the legendary comedy.

    Before being immortalised in to the fabric of Australian pop culture, thanks to Gina’s 
    rendition, the song had been covered by the likes of Shirley
    Bassey in 1968 and Sammy Davis Jr in 1965.

    And now, the Born This Way hitmaker has taken a stab at
    the track – with the results markedly different to the brassy feel of the Kath & Kim version.

    Gaga’s take, which also features on her new album Harlequin, is
    a much more  stripped back that builds to a crescendo thanks to rocking guitars.

    Speaking to Today Extra about the track, Kath & Kim star Peter Rowsthorn joked
    that he was ‘constantly’ hounded by the US
    pop star regarding the track.

    ‘She’s constantly calling me, so I know she’s a
    big fan,’ Pete, who play’s Kim’s on-again-off-again husband Brett in the series,
    said. 

    US pop star Lady Gaga has taken on a track known best to Aussies
    as the theme tune to the iconic comedy series Kath & Kim for her film Joker: Folie à
    Deux

    ‘I said to Gaga, «If you want to do it, it’s up to you. I’m the fifth banana in this thing».’

    Peter went on to mention that he did have a favourite between the two renditions.

    ‘I believe the Gina Riley version, or the «Kim» version, is
    the better version.’ 

    The Today Show posted a short clip featuring the Gaga’s version over the Kath and Kim title sequence to Instagram and viewers were quick
    to issue their shock at the surprising cover version.

    It is not clear when Apollonia’s relationship
    with Prince began or ended as he was dating another one of
    the stars of Purple Rain during the making of the film, Susan Moonsie.

    Prince and Beyonce famously joined forces onstage at the 2004 Grammy Awards,
    performing a medley that included his iconic 1984 single Purple
    Rain. 

    Their duet also included her fan favorite number Crazy In Love, which saw him accompany
    her on the electric guitar.

    Afterwards, Prince gave an interview in which he shared his appraisal of Beyonce’s musical abilities when they worked together.

    ‘I was really curious as to how much she knew musically, and I was

    Said one user: ‘I actually thoroughly enjoyed it.
    If you don’t like musicals or ‘art house’ style films you probably won’t like it
    because it’s not made for you. The dynamic between Harley and Joker was brilliant and showcased the ‘obsession’ that
    is key to that duo.’ 

    The movie’s box office collapse was swift and has many in the industry wondering: How did the highly anticipated sequel to an Oscar-winning, billion-dollar film with the same creative team go
    wrong? Just three weeks ago, tracking services pegged
    the movie for a $70 million debut, which would still have been down a fair amount from Joker’s record-breaking
    $96.2 million launch in October 2019. 

    A number of fans took to social media to defend the controversial sequel

    Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the
    cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical element not
    present in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining the franchise 

    Reviews were mixed out of the Venice Film Festival, where it premiered in competition like the first movie and even got a 12-minute standing ovation.

    But the homecoming glow was short-lived, and the fragile foundation would crumble
    in the coming weeks with its Rotten Tomatoes score dropping from 63
    percent at Venice to 33 percent by its first weekend
    in theaters. Perhaps even more surprising were the audience reviews:
    Ticket buyers polled on opening night gave the film a deadly
    D CinemaScore. Exit polls from PostTrak weren’t any better.
    It got a meager half star out of five possible.

    ‘That´s a double whammy that´s very difficult to recover from,’ said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media
    analyst for Comscore. ‘The biggest issue of all is the reported budget.
    A $40 or $50 million opening for a less expensive movie
    would be a solid debut.’

    Joker: Folie à Deux cost at least twice as much as the first film
    to produce, though reported figures vary at exactly how pricey
    it was to make. Phillips told Variety that
    it was less than the reported $200 million; Others have
    it pegged at $190 million. Warner Bros. released
    the film in 4,102 locations in North America.
    About 12.5 percent of its domestic total came from 415 IMAX screens.

    Internationally, it’s earned $81.1 million from 25,788 screens, bringing
    its total global earnings estimate to $121.1 million. In the next two weeks, Joker 2 will also open in Japan and
    China.

    Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot,
    which added $18.7 million in its second weekend, bringing its domestic total to nearly $64 million. Globally, it’s made over $100 million. Warner Bros.’ Beetlejuice
    Beetlejuice  took third place in weekend five, Paramount’s Transformers One landed in fourth and Universal and Blumhouse’s
    Speak No Evil rounded out the top five.

    The other big new release of the weekend, Lionsgate’s White Bird, flopped with just $1.5 million from just over 1,
    000 locations, despite an A+ CinemaScore.

    Overall, the weekend is up from the same frame last year, but Joker’s start is an unwelcome twist
    for theater owners hoping to narrow the box office deficit.

    The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces, some who posit that it was
    deliberately alienating fans of the first movie

    Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix have said they aspired to make
    something as ‘audacious’ as the first film. The sequel added Lady Gaga into
    the fold , as a Joker superfan, and delved further into the mind of Arthur Fleck, imprisoned at Arkham and awaiting trial for the murders
    he committed in the first. It´s also a musical, with elaborately imagined song and dance numbers to old standards.
    Gaga even released a companion album called »Harlequin,’ alongside the film.

    The sequel has already been the subject of many
    think pieces, some who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans of the first movie.

    In cruder terms, it´s been called a ‘middle finger.’ But fans often ignore the advice of critics,
    especially when it comes to opening their wallets to
    see revered comic book characters on the big screen.

    ‘They took a swing for the fences,’ Dergarabedian said. ‘But except for
    a couple of outliers, audiences in 2024 seem to want to know what they´re getting when they´re going to
    the theater. They want the tried and true, the familiar.’ 

    Deadline editor Anthony D´Alessandro thinks the
    problem started with the idea to make the Joker sequel
    a musical. ‘No fan of the original movie wanted to see a musical sequel,
    ‘ he wrote on Saturday.

    The first film was also divisive and the subject of
    much discourse, then about whether it might send
    the wrong message to the wrong type of person. And yet people still flocked to see what the fuss was
    about. Joker went on to pick up 11 Oscar nominations,
    including best picture and best director, and three wins.
    It also made over $1 billion and was the highest-grossing R-rated film of all
    time, until this summer when Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine took the crown.

    Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S.
    and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic
    figures will be released Monday.

    telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during the making of the film,
    with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from
    the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month.

    A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally
    ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide.
    Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’

    In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of
    the film does not include a DC Studios logo.

    On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience
    score of 31% and a critic score of 32%

    A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end of the Joker sequel.
    while Phillips declined to comment to the publication. 

    Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and
    Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
    Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.

    It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC two
    months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.

    Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he
    told a reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this is
    kind of a Warner Bros. movie.’

    Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips  shortly after
    WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022 and was
    ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at a lower
    price point.’

    The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per cent less.

    However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static. 

    The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical and ‘ignoring’ the
    DC fanbase – with an agent familiar with Phillips’ process telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during the making of the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s LA

     A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the decision to film in Los Angeles’.

    A source directly involved with the film said: ‘No one could get through to Todd.
    And the one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and
    pay attention to what the fan expectations are,
    you’re going to fail.

    Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere the film at the
    Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed back – with a Warner spokesman saying the studio ‘fully supported
    the decision to bring the film to Venice.

    Joker: Folie À Deux has garnered the lowest CinemaScore in comic book
    movie history as the film bombed at the box
    office on opening night. 

    It has only made $114million worldwide against its $200million budget. 

    The psychological musical thriller — which has been criticized as ‘bleak’
    and ‘disappointing’ — officially released in theaters on Friday, October 4, but
    it only raked in $20 million at the domestic box office,
    per The Hollywood Reporter. 

    Phoenix reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel, which had
    earned him an Oscar for his portrayal in the 2019 film, while Gaga took on the role
    of Harleen Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn). 

    However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D
    rating on CinemaScore — the lowest score for a comic book movie. 

    Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this year and also received terrible reviews — holds a higher score

    On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of 31% and a critic
    score of 32%. 

    The sequel is projected to rake in less that $50 million at the domestic box office during the entirety
    of opening weekend, per The Hollywood Reporter. 

    Weeks ago, the movie had been projected to bring in around $70 million – but the number has since drastically dropped. 

    Joker (2019) notably opened with $96.2 million when the film first released
    in theaters – and eventually landed a little over $1 billion in the global box office. 

    The first movie – which was also directed by Todd Phillips – had
    a budget of between $55 and $70 million. However, the budget increased for Folie À Deux to around $200 million. 

    The 2019 movie garnered praise and positive reviews from both critics and audiences – and won the Golden Lion during
    the 76th Venice International Film Festival. 

    Joaquin received an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the Joker (Arthur Fleck) – and
    the film garnered an additional Academy Award for Best Original Score. 

    The sequel also screened during the Venice International
    Film Festival last month in September, where it
    earned a 12-minute standing ovation, per Deadline.   

    A source directly involved with the film said: ‘No one could get
    through to Todd. And the one thing about genre stuff:
    If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are,
    you’re going to fail.

    However, audiences have since taken to X after the movie released in theaters on Friday – and shared their opinions on the sequel, which features musical sequences. 

    One fan penned, ‘Joaquin Phoenix don’t deserve this.
    what happened to the script?’ while another added, ‘is it that bad,’ followed
    by a crying face emoji. 

    ‘Ironically I feel that a musical, if done well, could have been a good choice.

    It’d show how much of an unreliable narrator Fleck is,’ one typed. 

    ‘But with some original songs, that keep everything vague,
    not just covers. Also when I heard of the ending I snorted fr.’ 

    A social media user wrote, ‘Stop making sequels as musicals if the original wasn’t a musical.’ 

    ‘Maybe he [Phillips] only had an hour long movie, and decided to randomly add musical scenes
    to fill the runtime,’ one penned.

    One fan said, ‘the movie sucks. i had to walk out of the cinema,

    Phillips discussed whether he would be interested in making a
    third Joker film or a movie centered around Gaga’s character. 

    ‘It’s not really where this movie is headed
    for me. I feel like my time in the DC Universe was these two films.’ 

    Ahead of the movie’s release, Lady Gaga also dropped an accompanying album titled Harlequin on September 27.

    While the same director Todd Phillips was back in the hot
    seat, critics have said the sequel is just a ‘repeat’ of the first hit
    but with an added musical twist.

    Most critics have said Todd failed to use Gaga correctly in the movie and
    claimed she was only bought in for the musical aspect of it.

    While the majority of critics say Joker:
    Folie À Deux didn’t live up to expectations, others have dubbed
    the movie ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant.’ 

    Daily Mail’s Brian Viner commended the move as ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant’ but said it lacked any thrill. 

    The Independent’s Geoffrey Macnab said: ‘Today Joker is best remembered as one of the most subversive and original films of the
    last decade, while its hugely anticipated sequel is just as bleak and formally daring as its predecessor’.

    Meanwhile, the Irish Times’ Donald Clarke gave the movie just two stars but credited Phillips’ work for making
    a sequel following the first movie’s $1billion success.

    Financial Times critic Danny Leigh said although Gaga worked
    hard to bump the ratings up in the sequel, Phillips appeared to
    have no idea what to do with her. 

    Giving a three star rating, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw claimed the movie proves ‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitive.’

    Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is at the heart of their reason for entering Parliament in the
    first place hear themselves?

    In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against proposed electoral reforms that the major parties look set to come together to support.

    The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate, caps on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to prevent
    the equivalent of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what any party can spend at an election – actually less than the major
    parties currently spend.

    The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for
    donations, thus increasing the transparency of who makes political donations
    in the first place.

    So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their cash to influence election outcomes – and the extent to which they can use their wealth
    at all will be limited.

    The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed and frequency that disclosures of donations need to be
    made.

    At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made – but you
    only find out the details of who has given what to whom many months later,
    well after elections are won and lost.

    In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much greater transparency and far less big money being
    injected into campaigning by the wealthy.

    Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’ with the
    policy and warned the reform would ‘not stop the rot’ 

    Greens senate leader Larissa Waters (left) fired a warning shot –
    saying if it serves only the major parties ‘it’s a rort, not reform’. Teal
    independent ACT senator David Pocock (right) said: ‘What seems to
    be happening is a major-party stitch-up’

    Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to $16,
    000 under the current rules, will need to disclose having done so.

    And how much they can donate will be capped.

    Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed new
    laws, labeling them a ‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’
    and ‘a rort, not a reform’. 

    They have lost their collective minds after finding out that Labor’s proposal just
    might secure the support of the opposition.

    I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write
    this column.

    Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency measures stamping out
    the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals, in a united crossbench effort
    to drag the major parties closer to accountability.

    More fool me.

    The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is
    being put forward by Labor and is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.

    It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply, the Greens and Teals doth
    protest too much on this issue.

    Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors such as
    Clive Palmer

    Another potential target of the laws is businessman and Teal funder Simon Holmes à Court

    The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules (Greens leader
    Adam Bandt and Senator Mehreen Faruqi are pictured)

    The major parties have long complained about
    the influence the likes of Simon Holmes à Court wields
    behind the scenes amongst the Teals. 

    And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the wealthy
    in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules.

    Now that tangible change has been proposed, these
    bastions of virtue are running a mile from reforms that will curtail dark art of political donations.

    The Labor government isn’t even seeking for
    these transparency rules to take effect immediately, by the
    way. It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power play before the next election designed to catch the crossbench out.

    They are aiming for implementation by 2026,
    giving everyone enough time to absorb and understand the changes before preparing for them.

    Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor
    and the Coalition. I imagine the opposition want to go
    over the laws with a fine tooth comb.

    As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to
    include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which
    would create loopholes only the unions are capable of taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the years to come.

    But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get these proposed laws implemented,
    the crossbench should offer their support, not cynical opposition, to what is being advocated for.

    They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could be incorporated in the package.

    To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about being in politics
    to ‘clean things up’.

    Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is at the heart of their reason for entering Parliament in the first place hear themselves?

    In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against proposed
    electoral reforms that the major parties look set to
    come together to support.

    The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate, caps on the amount candidates can spend in individual
    electorates to prevent the equivalent of an arms race, and a $90million limit
    on what any party can spend at an election – actually less than the
    major parties currently spend.

    The proposed new laws also include lower
    disclosure thresholds for donations, thus increasing the transparency of who makes political
    donations in the first place.

    So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their
    cash to influence election outcomes – and the extent to which they can use their wealth at all will be limited.

    The bill will further improve transparency by also
    increasing the speed and frequency that disclosures of donations need to be made.

    At present we have the absurd situation in which
    donations get made – but you only find out the details
    of who has given what to whom many months later, well after elections are won and lost.

    In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much
    greater transparency and far less big money being injected into campaigning by the
    wealthy.

    Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’ with the policy and warned the reform would ‘not stop the rot’ 

    Greens senate leader Larissa Waters (left) fired a warning shot – saying if it
    serves only the major parties ‘it’s a rort, not reform’. Teal independent ACT
    senator David Pocock (right) said: ‘What seems to be happening is a major-party stitch-up’

    Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to $16,000 under
    the current rules, will need to disclose having done so.
    And how much they can donate will be capped.

    Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed new laws,
    labeling them a ‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not a reform’. 

    They have lost their collective minds after finding out that
    Labor’s proposal just might secure the support of the
    opposition.

    I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before
    even starting to write this column.

    Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency measures stamping out the influence of
    the wealthy must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting
    Teals, in a united crossbench effort to drag the major parties closer to accountability.

    More fool me.

    The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put
    forward by Labor and is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.

    It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply,
    the Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.

    Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors such as Clive Palmer

    Another potential target of the laws is businessman and Teal funder Simon Holmes à Court

    The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary to their irregular calls
    to tighten donations rules (Greens leader Adam Bandt and Senator Mehreen Faruqi are pictured)

    The major parties have long complained about the influence the likes of Simon Holmes à Court wields behind the scenes amongst the
    Teals. 

    And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the wealthy in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules.

    Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are running a mile from reforms that
    will curtail dark art of political donations.

    The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules
    to take effect immediately, by the way. It won’t be
    some sort of quick-paced power play before the next election designed to catch the crossbench out.

    They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough time to absorb and understand the changes
    before preparing for them.

    Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the
    Coalition. I imagine the opposition want to go over the laws
    with a fine tooth comb.

    As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which would create loopholes only the unions
    are capable of taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging
    the Coalition electorally in the years to come.

    But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get these proposed laws implemented, the crossbench should offer their support, not
    cynical opposition, to what is being advocated for.

    They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could be incorporated in the package.

    To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about being in politics to ‘clean things up’.

    In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does not include
    a DC Studios logo.

    A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end of the Joker sequel,

    Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and
    Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
    Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say
    no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.

    It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC two

    Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio but
    Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a
    reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros.
    movie.’

    Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if
    the director would make the sequel at a lower price point.’

    The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around
    20 per cent less.

    A source directly involved with the film recently shared:
    ‘The one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re going
    to fail’; director Todd Phillips seen with Gaga and Phoenix at the LA premiere September 30

    However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget
    remaining static.

    A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the decision to film in Los Angeles’.

    A source directly involved with the film said: ‘No one could get through to Todd.

    Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere the film at the
