‘That´s a double whammy that´s very difficult to recover from,

‘The biggest issue of all is the reported budget. A $40 or $50 million opening for a less expensive movie would be
a solid debut.’
Joker: Folie à Deux cost at least twice as much as the first film
to produce, though reported figures vary at exactly how pricey it was to make.
Phillips told Variety that it was less than the reported $200 million; Others have
it pegged at $190 million. Warner Bros. released the film in 4,
102 locations in North America. About 12.5 percent of its domestic total came from 415 IMAX
screens.
Internationally, it’s earned $81.1 million from 25,788 screens, bringing its total global earnings estimate to $121.1 million. In the next two
weeks, Joker 2 will also open in Japan and China.
Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s The
Wild Robot, which added $18.7 million in its second weekend, bringing its domestic total to nearly $64
million. Globally, it’s made over $100 million. Warner Bros.’
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice took third place in weekend five, Paramount’s Transformers One
landed in fourth and Universal and Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil rounded out
the top five.
The other big new release of the weekend, Lionsgate’s White Bird, flopped
with just $1.5 million from just over 1,000 locations, despite an A+ CinemaScore.
Overall, the weekend is up from the same frame last year, but Joker’s start is
an unwelcome twist for theater owners hoping to narrow the box office deficit.

with the idea to make the Joker sequel a musical.
‘No fan of the original movie wanted to see a musical sequel,’ he
wrote on Saturday.
The first film was also divisive and the subject of
much discourse, then about whether it might send the wrong message to
the wrong type of person. And yet people still flocked to see what the fuss was about.
Joker went on to pick up 11 Oscar nominations, including best
picture and best director, and three wins.
It also made over $1 billion and was the highest-grossing R-rated film of
all time, until this summer when Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine took the crown.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S.
and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore.

officials on Tuesday failed to offer much new on stimulus plans to revive the economy.
The yuan is down 0.7% against the dollar so far this month, due to
broad dollar strength, but the currency has 0.5%
firmed for the year-to-date.
China equities’ recent rally has raised the bar for an upside
surprise from expected fiscal stimulus news, said UBS strategists led by
Rohit Arora, adding that the offshore yuan’s near-term risk reward is unattractive.
«Historically, fizzling of China equities’ spurts acted as a bigger drag on CNH vis-à-vis the tailwinds from equities’ surge,» the strategists
said.
Nevertheless, market participants are still awaiting additional stimulus measures that could help further lift China asset sentiment.
Citi FX traders think the offshore yuan could trade well if local
equities remain supported, similar to what happened in Nov.
2022 – Jan. 2023, according to the bank’s note to clients.
The offshore yuan traded at 7.0682 yuan per dollar, up about 0.09%
in Asian trade. The dollar’s six-currency index was 0.039% higher at 102.53.

Anyone who knows me has invariably been subject to
a spiel about how much I love Claudia Winkleman. In part, it’s because she’s so silly, and in part, it’s
because I’m a huge fan of everything she presents, from
Strictly to The Traitors.
But even more than any of that, it’s because I’m obsessed with
everything she wears. I’ve spent a fortune copying her exact
outfits, from her Sister Jane heart cutout dress to a bedazzled Nadine Merabi blazer that I definitely
don’t go anywhere fancy enough to wear.
Since 2005, Claudia has worked with stylist Sinead McKeefry to perfect her signature style.
I’d describe it as soft goth: lots of black, velvet and chunky knits, with a fair few sequins and prints (particularly tartan) thrown in. I’m not alone in my reverence: there are entire Instagram accounts dedicated to tracking down the presenter’s outfits.
But while they offer incredibly useful style inspo, two issues arise repeatedly: Claudia’s
clothes are usually hugely expensive or sold out (or both).
So when the Strictly host stepped out in a typically preppy black velvet mini dress on Sunday, you’d be forgiven for assuming it was by some top-end designer.
Well, you’d be wrong. The mini dress actually came courtesy of one of our favourite high street brands, Albaray – and you
can pick it up for less than £100.
The dress is made from plush fabric with contrast satin detailing.
The velvet makes it a little festive, perfect for celebratory bashes over the next
few months, particularly when paired with white stilettos à
la Claud. But it could be just as easily dressed down with white
trainers or ballet flats and a trench for a chic
office outfit, so you’ll certainly get your wear out of it.
Like all of Albaray’s products, it’s ethically made using responsible fabric and sent via a carbon-neutral shipping method, so you can feel good about the dress’s eco-credentials as well
as how it looks. It’s currently in stock in a few sizes online (and
in certain John Lewis concessions) but like most things Claudia wears, it
won’t stick around long. Now excuse me while I go and add

‘Tell them how you feel, Joaquin,’ Lady Gaga, 38, said to her costar as
she held out a fake microphone in front of him.
‘It’s so hard to talk about but I think we feel like we achieved what we set out to
do,’ Joaquin, 49, simply stated.
Someone on X, formerly Twitter, posted the moment online
last week and it went viral, gaining more then 437,000 views in a matter of days – and many users took
their initial silence as proof that they ‘didn’t like’ the film.
The internet has been flooded with negative posts about the flick
ever since it premiered, with one user branding it as a ‘bore’ and
another claiming it had ‘no plot.’
Many social media users have also slammed the movie’s final scene,
which saw main character Arthur Fleck (portrayed by Joaquin) brutally stabbed to death by a fellow inmate.
This meant that the man that audiences had been watching over the course of the two movies was never the
Joker at all, but in fact, the infamous villain from the Batman series was really
just the random inmate who killed Arthur in the last moments of the film.
The shocking twist left numerous viewers unsatisfied, and they took to social media to share their frustration.

‘The ending was pathetic,’ scathed someone
else. ‘WTF you mean no Joker?’
‘The ending made no sense,’ added another person.
‘That ending? It’s so bad that not only it ruins Joker 2 but also the first
Joker for the audience,’ read a fourth tweet.
‘The Joker had so much potential but that f**king ending ruined everything,’ a fifth said.
The Todd Phillips-directed musical serves as a follow-up
to the 2019 box office hit, which was simply titled Joker.
The first film grossed over $1 billion and at the time was the highest-grossing R-rated
film of all time. It received 11 Oscar nominations – two of which it won.
The sequel, however, has already been much less successful.
It had a lackluster $40 million debut at the box office in its first weekend,
and has a low rating of 33 percent and 31 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
‘Undoing much of the goodwill from its predecessor, the sequel convolutes what could have been a unique character
study into a bloated encore that goes out with a whimper,
‘ reads one review.
Another critic wrote, ‘This movie is a disjointed mess and
a waste of time. It’s just tired, not particularly interesting, but it does look good from a
production design standpoint.’

All six senior members of the new federal anti-corruption watchdog have accepted Qantas
Chairman’s Lounge memberships as calls grow to refer Anthony Albanese over the perks
he took from the airline.
Gift disclosure logs for the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) leadership positions show commissioners are all
part of Australia’s ‘most exclusive club’ the Chairman’s Lounge membership extended by invite only by the Qantas chair.
This has raised concerns over how impartial the body would be when dealing with Qantas matters.
If Mr Albanese has requested flight upgrades from former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce directly,
as reported in a new book, he may have fallen foul of the strict Ministerial
Code of Conduct which prohibits ministers from seeking ‘any kind of benefit’
Commissioner Paul Brereton declared Chairman’s Lounge
membership in 2023, as did the CEO Philip Reed and deputy commissioners Jaala Hinchcliffe and Nicole Rose, Sky News reported on Wednesday.
Deputy commissioners Ben Gauntlett and Kylie Kilgour declared their membership in February 2024, which means it was after
the NACC began operation in July 2023.

An NACC spokesperson confirmed the Commissioner, three deputy commissioners and CEO are members of the Chairman’s lounge.
‘This does not impact the integrity of the Commission,’ the spokesman said.
‘Each of the statutory office holders has made appropriate declarations in regards to Chairman’s lounge membership in the NACC Gifts and Benefits register.
‘Qantas is not a Commonwealth agency within the Commission’s
jurisdiction.’
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton and his deputy Sussan Ley
have said the Prime Minister should refer himself to
the NACC over 22 upgrades and extra Chairman’s Lounge memberships
received from Qantas.
An insight into the type of service offered by the Chairman’s Lounges was offered
by a job ad posted on employment site Indeed for the one
at Canberra Airport.
The ad, placed by hotel group Accor that
Qantas contracts to run the lounges, stated they were seeking ‘a highly motivated Food & Beverage Attendant to
join our experienced and professional Front of House team’.
‘This role is based within the Chairman’s
Lounge, a small fine dining restaurant and lounge
area that offers an a la carte menu designed by Neil Perry
Consulting,’ the ad states.
‘Service is discrete yet attentive, providing friendly and efficient food and beverage offerings that meets our passengers’ expectations.’

A job ad for the Canberra Qantas Chairman’s Lounge sets
out the requirements to serve the high and mighty
Applicants must ‘have experience working in a
fine dining environment and the ability to work a seven- day rotating roster.
The claims Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy when booking Qantas flight
by personally requesting them from Mr Joyce are made
in a new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe
Aston.
Aston alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce while in his various parliamentary jobs,
which included Minister for Transport to ask for special upgrades that
only the CEO could dole out for himself or his family.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights Mr
Albanese received upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to
Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu.
The book also revealed that as well as son Nathan having a ‘plus one’ Chairman’s Lounge membership Mr Albanese’s partner Jodie Haydon did as well.
Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that all were ‘declared in the appropriate way’.
WHAT IS THE QANTAS CHAIRMAN’S CLUB?
The Qantas Chairman’s Lounge is an invitation-only club approved by
the company chairman, with the guest list a closely-guarded secret.

PARIS (AP) – Not even a tense tête-à-tête in the gold medal game
could spoil the vibe at Paris´ biggest beach party.
Canada´s Brandie Wilkerson and Brazil´s Ana Patrícia got into a finger-pointing shouting match across the net in the tiebreaking
third set of the beach volleyball final of the Paris Olympics on Friday night.
The referee tried to keep the peace, but it was the Eiffel Tower Stadium DJ
who cooled tempers on the sand by playing John Lennon´s «Imagine» over the PA system.
The players laughed and clapped. The crowd applauded and sang along.
Wilkerson was shown a yellow card.
The top-ranked Brazilians left with the gold medal.
«We`re competitors and we are fighting for the same thing: There´s only one gold medal,» Wilkerson said during a post-match news conference in which the two
laughed and jokingly put up their fists as if they were
going to brawl it out.

«Immediately after the game, it´s all love and respect,» she
said. «We bring out the best in each other, and I´m honored to play against this team.»
Ana Patrícia and Duda rallied from an 11-5 deficit to take the first-to-21, win-by-two first set 26-24, and Canada won the second 21-12.
Brazil opened up a 12-7 lead in the first-to-15 tiebreaker when, after a joust at the net, Wilkerson and Ana Patrícia began pointing fingers at each other.
The second referee, the one at sand level, moved out to separate the two players, but
Wilkerson continued to argue and picked up a yellow
card. As the Brazilians got into position to serve for
the next point, the DJ began playing «Imagine,» the late Beatle’s song calling for unity and peace.
The message resonated with the players.
«What a beautiful opportunity we have to play the finals under the Eiffel Tower against the best in the world,»
Wilkerson said. «Like, that, in of itself, is a win.»
Wilkerson told reporters afterward that it was all a misunderstanding: She was responding to her
family, cheering in the crowd behind the Brazilians, and Ana Patrícia thought Wilkerson was
taunting her.
«We´re pretty amped up, partners are coming in, refs are coming in. So it was a bit of a mess,»
Wilkerson said. «But after the game, and even right when they came to shake our hands, still on the court, there was an immediate hug and just kind of like, `Hey, it´s all good.´»
When play resumed, it took Brazil only five more points to finish off Wilkerson and Melissa Humana-Paredes, kicking off a party the
sport’s spiritual home hadn’t seen since hosting the 2016
Rio de Janeiro Games at Copacabana. In Tokyo, the country was shut out at the Summer Games for
the first time since beach volleyball was added to the program in 1996.
Three years later, Brazil not only returned to the podium but
climbed to its top step.
With the Eiffel Tower’s strobes sparking in the background and
yellow- and green-wearing fans singing and waving Brazilian flags, the
country was awarded its first women’s gold since Atlanta. (The United States, which had
won four of the last five, was shut out in both the men’s and women’s tournaments
in Paris.)
After the medal ceremony, the Canadians and Brazilians
– along with the bronze-winning Swiss – posed for selfies together.
Wilkerson and Ana Patrícia spoke to each other and hugged; there may have even been an air kiss.
«It was a game thing,» Ana Patrícia said. «Everybody wants to win. But it happens. It´s everybody trying to win, but now everything is OK.»
Wilkerson and Humana-Paredes will return to Canada with the country’s
first beach volleyball medal since the men won bronze at the 1996 Atlanta Games.
That team was coached by Humana-Paredes’ father.
Switzerland beat Australia in straight sets in the third-place game earlier
Friday night to earn the bronze medal.
Nina Brunner and Tanja Huerberli beat Tokyo silver medalists Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar 21-17,
21-15 in 39 minutes. It was the second Summer Games in a
row that a Swiss team took the bronze medal, coming three years
after Joana Heidrich and Anouk Vergé-Dépré placed third in Tokyo.
On the men’s side, Sweden was set to face Germany
for gold on Saturday night, with Norway and Qatar playing for
the bronze.

evening as London welcomed the UK premiere of her new film, Joker:
Folie à Deux.
The singer turned actress takes a starring role as Harley Quinn in the psychological thriller, in which Joaquin Phoenix reprises his role as the titular Joker – Batman’s soon-to-be nemesis.
Arriving at CIneworld Leicester Square alongside ever-supportive fiancé Michael Polansky, Gaga looked incredible in a custom-made gown from Celine by
Hedi Slimane as she greeted fans.
The incredible structured number featured dramatic shoulder pads and a plunging neckline which showed off her figure as she posed up a storm.

negative reviews from critics before its October 4 release and
flopped at the box office.
Tim, 39, who played a guard at Arkham Asylum in the
movie, said Todd Philips’s new film has ‘no plot’ and
admitted he knew it was ‘going to bomb’ while filming.
Speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Tim said: ‘It’s the
worst film ever made.
‘I think what happened, after the first Joker, there was a lot
of talk like, ‘Oh, this was loved by incels.
This was loved by the wrong kinds of people. This sent the wrong
kind of message. Male rage! Nihilism! All these think pieces.

‘And then I think, ‘What if we went the other way,’ and
now they have Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga tap dancing to
a point where it’s insane.’
He continued: ‘It has no plot. We would sit there,
me and these other guys were all dressed in these security outfits because we’re working at
the Arkham Asylum, and I would turn to one of them and we’d hear this crap and I’d go,
‘What the f*** is this?’ And they’d go, ‘This is going to bomb,
man.’ I go, ‘This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen.’
‘We were talking about it at lunch, and we’d go, ‘What is the plot?
Is there a plot? I don’t know, I think he falls in love with her
in the prison?’ It’s not even hate-watchable. That’s how terrible
it is.’
Despite the negative reviews a number of fans
of the sequel took to social media after its release last month to defend the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.
The film debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic box office,
good enough for the weekend’s top spot, but less than projections, and half that of its predecessor.
Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up
for the movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking
away from the cookie cutter nature of sequels to
introduce a musical element not present in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining the
franchise.
‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100% as divisive as people are making it out to be.
I love that the film didn’t try to be a traditional sequel, and fully
committed to the storytelling they presented. It never deviated to be a film full of Easter
eggs or any other crowd pleasing aspects.’
Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how it was structured as a meta-exploration of the first film’s fandom and
the musical elements were a lot of fun.’

ovation it received at the Venice Film Festival last month.
‘Gaga is surprised by the response to Joker 2 and is
shocked that people don’t love it after the response it received from critics before it premiered,’ a source exclusively told DailyMail.com.
‘She put so much heart into the movie and has so much respect for the DC comics fan base.’
They added: ‘Her team is quietly looking at other projects they can roll
out as they want to move on this from as quickly as possible.’
It comes after lead star Lady Gaga was left ‘disappointed’ at

But despite the lacklustre reception from fans, a second source claimed she is
not letting it deter her from returning to the big screen, with the singer said to
be eyeing up a Quentin Tarantino movie.
‘She is disappointed that Joker is pretty much a bomb,’ they
said.
‘She thought that this film could get her an Oscar nomination, especially since the first film was such
a success and Joaquin won an Oscar.
‘She would now like to land a role in Quentin Tarantino’s next and final film.
Nobody knows what that is going to be, but she wants to audition.
‘She’s going to lobby hard to get a meeting with him once a script is presented, it is a bucket list moment for her to be involved.’
