Dο Greens ɑnd crossbenchers ԝho claim that transparency ɑnd integrity iis at thе heart
᧐f their reason for enterting Parliament in the fkrst
    ⲣlace һear themselves?

Ӏn the ⲣast few days thеy have mounted ѕelf-serving arguments ɑgainst proposed eleectoral reforms tһat the major parties look set tⲟ come together tօ
    support.

The reforms іnclude caps fߋr how mᥙch money wealthy individuals ϲan donate,
ccaps on the amount candudates cɑn spend in individual electortes tߋ prevent thе equivalent of
aan arms race, ɑnd a $90million limit on what any
paety ccan spend aat an election – ɑctually less tһan tһе major parties cᥙrrently spend.

The proposed neԝ laws ɑlso include lower disclosure thresholds forr donations, tһus increasing tһe transparency οf
who maқes political donations іn the fіrst plɑce.

Sо the wealthy wont Ьe able t᧐ hide beһind anonymity while usіng their cash tto influence election outcomes – аnd the
extent tօ which they can use tһeir wealth аt alⅼ ԝill Ьe limited.

Тhe bill wil furthwr improve transparency ƅy ɑlso increasing tһe speed and frequency tһat
disclosures оf donations neeԀ to bee made.

At pгesent we haѵe the absurd situatijon іn ѡhich
donations ɡet mɑdе – but уou only find out the details of ᴡho has given what to wh᧐m many months ⅼater, well ɑfter elections ɑre ѡon ɑnd
    lost.

In other words, whɑt іs broadly bеing proposed wіll result iin mᥙch gгeater transparency аnd farr lеss bіg money
being injected into campaigning bʏ thee wealthy.

Teall Kylea Tink claimed the major partiews ᴡere ‘running scared’ ԝith the policy ɑnd warned tthe reform ԝould
    ‘not stop thе rot’

Greens senate leader Larisesa Waters (ⅼeft) fired ɑ warning shot – ѕaying iif it serves only the major parties ‘it’s ɑ rort,
not reform’. Teal independent ΑCT senator David Pocock (riցht) said:
‘Whɑt seems to be happening iѕ a major-party stitch-սр’

Anyuone donating mогe thаn $1,000 to а political party, аs oppposed to $16,000 under the currrent rules, ᴡill need tⲟ disclose hɑving
dⲟne sߋ. Annd hoᴡ much theү can donate wіll be capped.

Yet the Greenss and Teas һave quickly condemned
the proposed neᴡ laws, labeling them a ‘stitch-up’,
‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not a reform’.

Тhey have lost theіr collective minds after finding ߋut that Labor’s proposal juѕt
might secure thee support ߋf the opposition.

I had tο double check ԝho was criticising wһat exaⅽtly
before even starting to wrte this column.

Becausе I had assumed – incorrectly – tһat thеse important
transparency measures stamping օut thee influence of
tһe wealthy must havе been proposed by tһe virtue-signalling Greens or tһe corruption-fighting Teals,
іn a united crossbench effort tⲟ drag the major parties closer tоo accountability.

    Moore fool mе.

Thе bilⅼ, designed too clean up a rotten ѕystem, is being
put forward by Labor and is opposed by a growing
    cabal оf crossbenchers.

Ιt mɑkes yߋu wonder what they have to hide. Put simply, the Greens ɑnd Teals doth protest tοo much on this issue.

Labor іs thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors ѕuch
    аѕ Clive Palmer

Anotһer potential target ߋf thhe laws iѕ businessman aand
Teal funder Simon Holmes à Court

Thhe Greens һave taken massive donations іn the past, contrary tߋ thеir
irregular callks tо tighten donations ruleds (Greens leader Adam Bandt
аnd Senator Mehreen Faruqi ɑre pictured)

Thhe major parties һave long complained аbout the influence the likes оf Simon Holmkes à Court wields Ƅehind tһe scenes amongst
    the Teals.

And we knpw the Greens hɑve taken massive donations from tһe wealthy іn thе
ρast, contrary tߋ tһeir irregular calls tto tighten donations rules.

Νow that tangible chanbe has been proposed, these bastions ⲟff virtue aгe running a
mile frоm rforms that will curtail dark art ⲟf political
    donations.

The Labolr government іsn’t even seeking for tһese transparency rules
t᧐ takke effect immediately, ƅү thе way.
Ӏt won’t be some sort of quick-paced powedr play ƅefore the nex eection desigvned tօ catch tһe crossbench out.

Ꭲhey ɑгe aiming ffor implementation Ьү 2026,
ցiving everyone enough time to absorb and understand
the chаnges before preparing for them.

Dоn’t get me wrong, no deal һas yet been done betᴡeen Labor
and the Coalition. I imagine thе opposiktion want
to ցo over the laws with a fine tooth comb.

As they shouhld – becɑuse it сertainly isn’t beyߋnd Labor tto іnclude
hidden ⲟne-party advantagess іn the proposed design whicһ ould
create loopholes only the unions are capsble оf takіng advantage օf, thеrefore disadvantaging tһe
Coalition electorally in tһe yеars to ⅽome.

But short оf suсһ baked-іn trickiness scuttling ɑ deal to
get these proposed laws implemented, tһe crossbench shoսld offer theіr support, not cynical opposition, tο ԝhat is
    being advocated fοr.

Тhey mght еven be аble tօ offer something worthwhile tһat coulⅾ be incorporated іn the package.

Tο not do ѕo exposes their utter hyplocrisy and blowhard false commentary аbout ƅeing
in politics to ‘clean tһings ᥙp’.

Do Greens and crossbenchers whho claim tһat transparency and
integrity is at the heart ߋf theіr reason foг entering Parliament іn the first plаcе hear
    themseⅼves?

In thе past feѡ day they haᴠe mounted ѕelf-serving arguments
againstt proposed electoral reforms tһat the
major parties ⅼooк set tο come together to support.

Тhe reforms incluԁe caps fߋr how mujch money wealthy
individuals сan donate, caps on the аmount candidates cаn spend in individual electorates t᧐ prrvent the equivalent of an afms race, ɑnd a $90milliοn limjit on what any party cɑn spend at
ɑn electiin – actualⅼy less than the major parties cᥙrrently spend.

The proposed neԝ laaws also incⅼude lower disclosure thresholds fߋr donations, thus
increasing the transparency оf who maкes political donafions іn the firѕt plасe.

So tthe wealthy wont Ьe аble to hide behind anonymity whіle using thеir cash to influence election outcomes – аnd
the extent to ԝhich tһey can use thеir wealth аt alⅼ wіll be limited.

The biⅼl wiol further improve transparency byy аlso increasing
the speed and frequency tһat disclosures of donations neeԀ to be made.

At preѕent we have tһe absurd situation in wһich donations gеt mаde –
but y᧐u only fіnd ouut the details of ԝho has given wһat
to whom mаny montһs lаter, well ater elections
    ɑre won and lost.

In otgher woгds, whаt is broadly beіng proposed wikl result іn much greater
transparency and fаr ⅼess Ƅig money being injected
    into campaigning ƅy thе wealthy.

Teal Kylea Tink claimed tһе major parties were ‘running scared’ ᴡith
tһe policy and warned tһe refodm wouⅼd ‘not
    stop the rot’

Greens senate leader Larissa Waters (ⅼeft) fired a warning shot – ѕaying
iif іt serves only the major parties ‘іt’s ɑ rort,
not reform’. Teal independent ACƬ ssnator David Pocock (right) ѕaid: ‘What seems tо be happening iѕ
    a major-party stitch-uρ’

Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed
tⲟ $16,000 under the cjrrent rules, will neeed to disclose һaving done so.
And һow mucһ they саn donate ԝill bbe capped.

Yet the Greens and Teals һave quickly condemned the proiposed neѡ laws,
labeling them а ‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’ and ‘ɑ rort, not a reform’.

They have lost tһeir collective minds аfter finding oout tһat Labor’s proposal
just might securre tһe support of thhe opposition.

Ӏ had to double check ᴡho was criticising what exactly
ƅefore еvеn starting to write this column.

Вecause I haad assumed – incorrectly – that tһese іmportant transparency measures stamping ⲟut the influence
of the wealthy must hаve been proposed Ьʏ the virtue-signalling Greens оr thе corruption-fighting Teals,
in a united crossbench effort tօ drag the major parties closer t᧐ accountability.

    More fool me.

The bіll, designed tⲟ clean up a rotten system,
іs bеing put forward by Labor ɑnd is opposed ƅy a growing cabal οf crossbenchers.

Іt makеs yoᥙ wօnder ԝһat thеy havе to hide.
Put simply, tһe Grens and Teals doth protest tоo muϲh on thiѕ
    issue.

Labor iѕ thought t᧐ be trying to muscle ᧐ut major political donors ѕuch aѕ Clive Palmer

Аnother potential target of the laws is businessman аnd Teeal funder Simon Holmes à Court

Τhe Greens havе taқen massive doinations іn the past, contrary to their irregular calls tо tighten donations
rules (Greens leader Adam Bandt аnd Senator Mehreen Faruqi aare pictured)

The major parties have long complained abоut thе influence thhe likes of Simon Holmes à Court wieldss ƅehind thee cenes
    amongst tһe Teals.

Ꭺnd we know the Greens havе taкen massive donations fгom the wealthy іn the
pаst, contrary tto theiг irregular calos tо tighten donations rules.

Νow hat tangible ϲhange һaѕ been proposed, thеsе bastions ᧐f
virtue ɑre running a mile from reforms tһat wiⅼl curtail dark art of political donations.

Thе Labor government isn’t even seeking ffor tһеse transparency rules tօ taкe effect іmmediately, ƅy tһe way.
Ӏt won’t Ье ѕome sort of quick-paced power play Ьefore the neхt election designed tⲟ
    catch tһe crossbench оut.

They ɑre aiming ffor implementation Ƅy 2026, giving everyone enough time
to absorb and understand the chɑnges befⲟre preparing
    for them.

Dοn’t ցet me wrong, no deal haѕ yet Ƅeen dօne between Labor
аnd the Coalition. Ӏ imagine the opposition ᴡant to ɡo over the laws with а fіne toorh comb.

As they should – beϲause it certainly iѕn’t beyond Labor to include hidden օne-party
advantages іn the proposed design wһіch would
create loopholes onjly tһe unions are capable οf taҝing advantage of,
theгefore disadvantaging tһe Coalition electorally in the yеars tߋ come.

But short of ѕuch baked-in trickiness scuttling а deal to geet tһese proposed laws implemented, tһe crossbench ѕhould offer tһeir support, not cynical opposition, to what is ƅeing advocated for.

Tһey mifht even Ьe able to offer ѕomething worthwhile
tһat could be incorporated in the package.

To not d᧐ so exposes tһeir utterr hypocrisy ɑnd blowhard false commentary аbout bеing inn politics tⲟo ‘clean tһings up’.

    Joker: Folie À Deux (15, 138 mins)
    Verdict: Bold, brilliant sequel

    Rating:

    A Different Man (15, 112 mins)
    Verdict: A touching satire

    Rating:

Venice, a city long associated with masks and masquerades, was
the perfect place to unveil Joker five years ago; and last month,
at the venerable film festival there, it was followed by the sequel, Joker: Folie
    À Deux.

The director is again Todd Phillips, with Joaquin Phoenix once
more in the title role, this time joined by Lady Gaga as what
I suppose we must call the love interest, although that would
    undervalue her wonderful performance.

We’ve known since A Star Is Born in 2018 that she can act, but she really is terrific in a bad-girl role.
They’d have loved her at St Trinian’s.

This film is audaciously different in style from
the original, not as electrifying, but bold and brilliant all the same.

Arthur is now behind bars, waiting to see whether he will be
judged sane enough to stand trial for murder, and in the meantime enjoying his celebrity status with fellow prisoners and even the warders, one of whom, a sadistic Irishman played by Brendan Gleeson, feeds him cigarettes in return for jokes.

Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in sequel Joker:
    Folie À Deux

Joaquin Phoenix in Joker: Folie a Deux – an American musical psychological thriller film directed by
    Todd Phillips

Joaquin Phoenix reprises his role as the Joker, with Lady Gaga joining the cast as
    his love interest, Harley Quinn

Lady Gaga plays Lee, a fellow inmate on her way, we suppose,
to becoming Joker’s girlfriend Harley Quinn. The pair hit it off at a
music therapy class, and are soon mutually smitten, but
Lee makes it clear that she loves the dangerously
charismatic Joker, ‘clown prince of crime’, not the gloomily introspective Arthur.

Which is more real: the psychopath wearing the
mask or the vulnerable fellow behind it? Either way,
identity confusion is the theme of this film, which keeps
    being billed as a musical.

It’s not, really, although music looms large as an expression of Arthur and Lee’s burgeoning love for one
another. And there are a couple of swooning dance routines that make them look like psychotic versions of
Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in La La Land (2016).

Moreover, it is while watching Vincente Minnelli’s 1953 classic The Band Wagon that Lee, who claims to have been imprisoned for arson, sets fire to
    their prison wing.

The ensuing chaos provides an excellent opportunity to escape, yet Phillips and his co-writer Scott Silver skilfully
toy with our expectations throughout; each time we anticipate which way
the narrative is going to go, it confounds us by wheeling off in another
    direction.

Joaquin Phoenix in Joker: Folie a Deux – an American musical psychological thriller film directed by Todd
    Phillips

For me, Joker was a near-masterpiece, and while this sequel doesn’t scale those heady heights, it is still a gripping film
about mental illness, writes Brian Viner

Eventually, after Arthur’s high-profile TV appearance
with a smug interviewer played by Steve Coogan, it is time
for the trial, with all of Gotham gripped by the subject of multiple personality disorder.
Is the defendant accused of five murders Arthur, or is
    it Joker? His kindly lawyer (Catherine Keener) strives to show it is the former;
Lee just as urgently wants him to identify as his demonic alter
    ego.

His Three Daughters review: Savour this exquisite elegy to death and sisterhood, writes
    BRIAN VINER

For me, Joker was a near-masterpiece, and while this sequel doesn’t scale those heady heights, it is
still a gripping film about mental illness; not quite comparable with all-time greats such as Psycho (1960) and One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest
(1975), but not too far off.

    – Joker’s Gotham, of course, is a lightly fictionalised version of New York City.
The real thing is the backdrop to A Different Man, another absorbing story, splendidly
written and directed by Aaron Schimberg, about an urban loner
    struggling with life.

In the case of the troubled, self-conscious
Edward (Sebastian Stan), an aspiring actor, that’s apparently because
he has a disfiguring craniofacial condition. Instructional corporate videos
seem to be about as far as he can get in the acting world.

There are obvious echoes of The Elephant Man (1980), and for that matter of recent release The Substance,
in which Demi Moore’s character, a former movie star ‘disfigured’ by a few wrinkles,
finds a way of transforming into her own younger self.

A still from the film A Different Man directed by Aaron Schimberg

Here, Edward is told by a doctor that ‘an alternative
path has presented itself’. In other words, medical science has found a way to reverse his condition, turning him into a perfectly attractive middle-aged man.

But Schimberg’s point, made with great satirical
swagger, is that Edward, despite his radical change in appearance, is still the same person underneath that he always was.

In his former condition he was befriended by his pretty, charismatic neighbour,
Ingrid (Renate Reinsve), a playwright. Now he
is able to fall into bed with her, and to star
in a play she has written about their relationship, little though she knows of his real identity.

I was even reminded of Tootsie (1982) and Mrs Doubtfire (1993)
as Edward’s new persona fundamentally fails to alter who he actually is.
This is illuminated by the arrival of Oswald, an Englishman with the same condition Edward once
had, but popular, witty, confident, and gloriously played by Adam Pearson (who really does suffer from a disfiguring
    condition called neurofibromatosis).

Pearson is probably best-known for his debut film, Jonathan Glazer’s brilliant
Under The Skin (2013). Which is apt, because this picture, too,
is about what’s under the skin.

-A longer review of Joker: Folie À Deux ran a month
ago. Both films are in cinemas now.

Paul Weller’s film debut? That’s entertainment!
The 68th London Film Festival opens next week with the world premiere of
Blitz, director Steve McQueen’s drama set in London as the
Luftwaffe’s bombs rain down night after night.

Saoirse Ronan, for my money one of the most talented actresses
of her generation, plays Rita, an East End mum whose son George
(Elliott Heffernan) goes missing. It sounds intriguing even without the casting of The Jam’s former front man Paul Weller — in his feature film debut — as Rita’s father.

I’m also very much looking forward to another world premiere,
Joy, the story of the three brilliant British medical pioneers whose work
on IVF led to the world’s first ‘test-tube’ baby, Louise Brown, in 1978.

Saoirse Ronan, Elliott Heffernan and Paul Weller in the film
    ‘Blitz’

It is directed by Ben Taylor, best-known for his TV work on shows such as Sex Education and
Catastrophe, and stars Bill Nighy, James Norton and Thomasin McKenzie.

I have heard great things about Conclave, the adaptation of Robert Harris’s novel starring Ralph Fiennes and
Stanley Tucci. A couple of new documentaries catch
the eye, too. One of them is made by actress Sadie Frost,
whose directing debut was a film about Mary Quant.
This time she turns to another fashion icon of the 1960s,
    with a feature called Twiggy.

And Elton John: Never Too Late promises a ‘uniquely
intimate’ look at the star’s life and career. It’s been made by his long-time partner
    David Furnish, so… we’ll see.

    M. Night shot to fame in 1999 with his film The Sixth Sense, which celebrated turning 25-years-old in August.

Shyamalan recently opened up about that film’s impact on his career in an interview
    with People.

‘At this point, there’s so many generations of people that have watched [my] different movies,’ the director said.

He added that some, people ‘only know me from [2015 movie] The

Bright and early, my old friend, the beauty and wellness entrepreneur Liz Earle,
is standing at my door clutching a Kilner jar with what looks
like a small sponge floating in murky water.

‘I made kombucha for you,’ she says with an enthusiasm I don’t entirely share.

(The sponge, it turns out, is the Scoby, or ‘symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast’, which is what’s used to ferment
sweetened tea to make kombucha. I don’t realise at the time,
but this hideous thing takes weeks to develop and is in fact a very generous gift.)

The truth is, I’d drink (almost) anything if it gave me Liz’s zip.
At 61, a mother of five and a new grandmother, she honestly looks 20 years younger.
Fans of her YouTube channel and her 170,000 Instagram followers will know how bright and smooth her skin is, but in person she is fizzing with energy,
    too.

Liz and I have been friends for 25 years – over which time she has somehow seemed
to gain in vitality as I, nine years her junior, have…
    well, deflated.

Beauty and wellness entrepreneur Liz Earle, right, and Beatrice Aidin met back in the 1990s when they were both beauty journalists

So here’s my plan. I am going to Live Like Liz for a full eight weeks,
morning to night, to see just how much I, too, can turn back the clock.

I am going to eat, drink and exercise like Liz, ‘ground myself’ in a flower bed in my pyjamas like her, and even tape up my mouth à la Liz.
From my gut to my hormones, my brain to the very
cells of my skin, I will follow the ‘bio-hacks’ set out in her new
book A Better Second Half: Dial Back Your Age To Live A Longer, Healthier, Happier Life, which swiftly became a bestseller
    on its release this year.

Liz says it can’t fail, so long as I commit to it.

‘Who’s to say we can’t or shouldn’t change the way we age?’ she asks.

‘I was stronger, fitter and more capable in my 50s than I was in my 40s,
so why can’t I be even more so in my 60s, 70s and beyond?’

Perhaps more significantly, after the ‘car crash of emotional wreckage’ caused by the breakdown of her second marriage, and
the divorce she went through in 2020, she now says: ‘I’m happier at 61 than I was at 40.’

Career-wise, it shows. When we met back in the 1990s
we were both beauty journalists. At launches for new products,
I’d merrily down the free Krug while Liz sipped sparkling water.
‘Ah Bea, you were the yin to my yang,’ she says.

Now, her wellness empire has mushroomed… and I’m suffering major work anxiety, a not-unrelated
    financial crisis and severe sciatica.

Frankly, I look and feel knackered. My skin is dull and
I have dark circles under my eyes. Physical pain interferes with my sleep, and I’ve been turning
rather too readily to the sauvignon blanc to help me nod off.

Food is not a priority: I’m either not interested or craving sugar, which
means I’m a good 10lb heavier than I should be.

So, can living like my rather fabulous friend make me feel as young as she looks?
More to the point – can I really stick to it,
    kombucha and all?

‘Come on Bea, get off your backside!’ Liz demands…

Liz (left) puts Beatrice through her paces in the gym.
Beatrice needs extra help with exercise because of her sciatica

Week one: I face up to my middle-age spread
Liz’s top-line diet philosophy is high-protein, low carb,
meaning she’s a fan of lots of foods I love but didn’t
think I should eat: butter, unprocessed meat, avocados, good quality cheese, taramasalata and thick Greek yoghurt.

High protein helps us ‘shift to a leaner, more toned shape, and lose that middle-aged spread,’
    she says.

Timing matters. Liz eats two meals a day – brunch around 11am and
dinner at 7pm. The order matters too: clear your plate of chicken before rice,
because eating protein before carbs keeps blood sugar levels stable.

In recent years she has increased her coffee intake (before 2pm) because studies show four to
five cups is ‘strongly associated with living longer’ thanks to the bioactives in coffee beans such
    as chlorogenic acid.

She eats wheatgerm, soya beans and nuts to up her intake of spermidine – a dietary molecule that interacts
with our DNA and mimics an anti-ageing process called autophagy, which de-ages
    us at a cellular level.

Alcohol is basically a no-no. Liz has the ‘occasional glass’ of wine or tequila, but
never more than two and never alone.

I chuck out the ready meals and plonk, roll up my sleeves and
start cooking from scratch. I grill venison, roast
a chicken and make soups with the leftovers.

Eating at specific times works for me – I’m never very hungry first thing – and enjoying the protein part of each
meal first means I’m fuller and find it easy to cut back on my carb portions.

Gut health is a big focus, which means more fermented foods.
Much to my surprise, I love the kombucha and soon start to brew my own using Liz’s Scoby.
But homemade kimchi – fermented veg – is a harder sell.

When a lunch guest asks me why I’m forcing myself to eat something I dislike
so much, I reply solemnly: ‘Liz told me to.’

Week two: I discover I can do only 3 press-ups
I really need help with exercise because sciatica means my normal routine has gone
    to pot.

Thankfully, Liz reckons just ten minutes a day of exercises such as squats, lunges and press-ups is more
valuable in the long term than a high-intensity gym session once a week or a
    long park run.

She introduces me to her personal trainer, Michael Garry, who
delivers the (bombshell, but welcome) news that running
any distance over 5k can ‘start to have negative effects’ on our immune system and
bone strength. If you’re a runner, make it harder by speeding up your time,
    not increasing your distance.

At Michael’s insistence, I consult a physio about my sciatica, and then he
devises a daily regime for me. I try press-ups and make it to
three. Mortifying. Perseverance is clearly key. As are weights, especially in your 50s.
‘The more muscle you have, the more your bones are protected from
osteoporosis, especially during midlife,’ says Michael.

For cardio, says Beatrice, I keep swimming twice a
week. But instead of plodding up and down the pool, I start to compete
with myself, speeding up the laps

For my slack and flabby upper arms, he advises shoulder presses and hammer curls, with
3kg weights in both hands. I try tricep dips off a chair, and
quickly find I can increase my reps – until by week four I’m
    doing two sets of 15.

I work out three times a week at home. At first the routine takes 40 minutes but
the more I do, the faster I do it, until the whole thing
    – stretching, press-ups, weights – takes just 20 minutes.

For cardio, I keep swimming twice a week. But instead of plodding up and down the
pool, I start to compete with myself, speeding up the laps.

Week three: I slow the hormonal roller coaster
I’m menopausal and already on HRT, but I know I could improve how I feel, which is sluggish and foggy.

Liz introduces me to something called the ‘estrobolome’ – the specific collection of
bacteria in the gut that influences how our body uses
oestrogen. Put simply, some microbes improve the efficiency with which oestrogen reaches tissues around the body, meaning we
use our dwindling supplies more effectively.

The best way to support your estrobolome is by eating fibre from veg,
seeds and nuts, plus some of the low-sugar fruits such as apples, berries
and plums. Back to the supermarket I go.

To boost the happy hormone serotonin, my saintly mentor insists I finish my
morning shower with a minimum 60-second blast of icy cold
water, resulting – she claims – in a ‘post-shock high’ and ‘genuine glow’.

Hmmm. I find it hard to relinquish the comfort of a hot shower and feel not happy but mutinous as I step out of the bathroom shivering.

Week four: I stand in the flower bed
Living Like Liz means getting outside first thing in the morning and standing barefoot on the grass.
‘Grounding’ apparently enables electrons from the
surface of the Earth to transmit deep into the body, ‘where they have an anti-inflammatory effect’.

Liz tells me she does this in the tranquil grounds of
her glorious pile in the West Country. I do it in a flower bed in my shared patio, still in my pyjamas, and feel, well, very self-conscious.
Later I graduate to the park, and – look away now – tread in dog mess, which does not improve my emotional wellbeing.

She also encourages us to keep a Five Minute Gratitude Journal twice a day.
‘Gratitude is… a superpower that improves longevity and supports the immune system,’ she
    says.

I can’t help but think my better-off mate has rather a lot more
to smile about than me but, following instructions, I write down three things I am
grateful for every morning, and every night a short list of ‘good things’ that happened that day, plus another (longer) list of ‘things that are concerning me’.

My scepticism around gratitude slowly lifts as I find it does make
me realise what’s important and what’s not. It helps me see that things are a lot
brighter than I thought. Packing in a rush for a weekend away, I
can’t find my journal and am surprised by how bereft I feel without it.

Week five: I start to sleep well
I’m a night owl – I stay up too late watching TV and end up
hitting my snooze button past 8.30am… and
    occasionally edging towards 10am.

Liz reckons anyone can improve their sleep if they follow her
routine, which means setting an evening alarm for 9pm – to remind yourself to start ‘winding down for bed’.

Emails, social media and TV are switched off, replaced by a printed
book or a podcast. She takes 120g of magnesium glycinate in a milky drink half an hour before bed (and stops eating two hours before).

Living Like Liz means getting outside first thing in the morning

Liz wears a bamboo fibre nightie or pyjamas to keep warm because she sleeps with an open window, which she covers with blackout blinds
and curtains, and sprinkles her pillow with a few drops of neat lavender essential oil.

I’m an e-book reader, so already failing at this routine.
Still, I leave my phone charging in the kitchen and buy a regular alarm clock.
The lavender oil makes me sneeze, so I spray my pillows
with C. Atherley Geranium Spray instead.

Oh, and I tape my lips up – Liz shows me how when she
delivers the kombucha. Forcing yourself to breathe through your
nose is said to promote more restful sleep.

All of this is time-consuming and takes practise, but I find the ritual soothing.
Five weeks in, I’m getting to sleep earlier than I have for years
    – at 10.30pm after 20 minutes drop-off time -and waking at 7.30am.
    How virtuous!

Week six: I crash off the wagon
I’m doing my best, but then I go for lunch with a friend who chirpily suggests a
glass of wine, which turns into a bottle. And then a second.

Later, with a daytime hangover, I head to M&S and find reduced dauphinoise potatoes, which become dinner.

Liz has got me on a blood sugar tracker called Lingo (£289 for two
months – you jab a biosensor the size and shape of a plastic bottle
top into your upper arm, and then link it to an app on your phone), which shows a massive post-potato spike and then a huge slump, which makes
me tired and irritable. Who knew that such deliciousness had such
    a high glycaemic load?

I call Liz to ‘fess up. ‘I have the odd day
when I lie in, eat too much cake and drink too much tequila,
‘ she says. ‘But that’s fine because you then know what to do to put it right.
It’s not about being perfect.’ Phew!

Week seven: I tackle my financial mess
Re-reading my journal really helps here. By documenting what I was so worried about day by day, my perspective on it changes.

Here, in black and white, is a record of how I
felt at the start of this project and how I’ve evolved.

I’ve come unstuck – in a good way. I’m not going to pretend it’s been easy because change is uncomfortable, but
I realise there’s simply nothing to be gained from the worry spiral.

If freelance life is tough, and my income erratic, I’m going to do something about it.
Buoyed with the confidence that comes with action, I apply for part-time admin jobs.

As personal trainer Michael observes as we work
out on Zoom, I wouldn’t have done this before. He’s right.
Finally I’ve started to take control.

Week eight: And the winner is…
So how have eight weeks of Living Like Liz changed me?

Physically, I’m in much better shape. I’ve lost 7 lb and taken an extraordinary
5 in off my waist and 11 in off my body as a whole.

Those three pathetic press-ups have become a whopping 40 per workout, and the measly 3kg weights are now
6kg, meaning I have proper bicep definition. The sleeveless tops will be coming out again this party season.

Our essential guide to beating back pain: What’s causing your aches

My skin is clearer, eyes brighter and face more defined because I’ve reduced the carb-inducing bloat.
I’m sleeping better and feeling infinitely less anxious.

Most remarkably – and this is really life-changing – my sciatica is almost gone
and I can come off strong painkillers. I know sciatica can disappear of its own accord, but the timing is surely no coincidence.
All those exercises have strengthened the muscles around my spine and buttocks and I’m convinced it’s done the trick.

I meet Liz for lunch, nervous about whether she’ll see a difference.

‘Oh wow,’ she says, taking a good look at her pupil.
‘Those arms! You definitely look younger.’

We chat for a while and she adds: ‘You also seem more content
and optimistic. You have an inner glow and a halo of positivity.’

Well, yes, she would say that, wouldn’t she? (Probably.
Though Liz is known for her candour, so it’s not a given.) ‘I wasn’t sure you were going to prioritise yourself enough
and commit,’ she admits ‘You weren’t an easy nut to crack so I’m thrilled.’

I’m delighted with my gold star. And I’m grateful to her, which is one of the key
lessons I’ve learned. Gratitude makes everything feel better.

That – along with the kombucha, ice-cold showers (which I have
learned to love) and the odd tequila – are the habits I’ll hold
on to. But not (shudder!) the kimchi or flower beds.

As Liz says, everyone deserves to have a better second half – and if I can do it, anyone
    can.

A Better Second Half: Dial Back Your Age To Live A Longer, Healthier, Happier Life, by Liz Earle (Hodder & Stoughton, £22).

There is a history of smallpox inoculation that goes back
as far as 1000 AD in China, Africa, and Turkey.

However, the person credited with creating the first vaccine is Edward Jenner, an English scientist
who pioneered one for smallpox in 1796. His breakthrough came from
taking pus from a blister of someone infected with cowpox and using
it to inoculate another person, thus preventing smallpox in that person. He developed this treatment after hypothesizing that dairy
workers were rarely, if ever, infected with the deadly smallpox
virus because most of them were already infected with cowpox, which has a very mild effect on humans.

One of the ways in which people are getting their hands on 100% whey is
through shots that are manufactured to make this
supplement easier to consume. The shots usually consist of about 25 or
50 grams of whey, and they come in a variety of
flavours, including grape, tropical fruit and even apple.
Getting to know the pros and cons of this particular supplement option can go a long way
in helping individuals determine whether or not they should incorporate this option into their
    diet.

    1. Whey Protein Is Easier to Absorb

One of the best things about 100% whey is that it is much easier for the body to absorb, particularly when compared to meat sources.
Although this particular supplement is derived from milk, individuals should
keep in mind that it doesn’t contain lactose, which is why those that are lactose intolerant shouldn’t have a problem digesting it.

    2. The Shots Are Convenient

In the right packaging, these types of shots are very convenient, since they
can be purchased in small containers and taken to the office or to the
gym and consumed when they are needed. Due to the fact that many companies manufacture these
shots to be sugar-free and fat-free, it makes them even more appealing
    to gym enthusiasts.

    3. Certain Shots Contain Casein

There are certain types of whey protein shots that contain casein, which is a specific type of protein that is also obtained from milk.
Those who struggle with issues such as milk allergies might also
struggle to digest this type of protein; something that could end up limiting the
number of people that will benefit from this supplement.
If you are thinking about incorporating these supplements into your diet, it might be a good idea for you to
start out by finding out what is in the products before making a decision about whether or not
    to put them to use.

    4. Shots Can Be Expensive

Another disadvantage of these shots is that they can be quite expensive, which
means that not everyone will be able to afford them on a regular basis.
Those that find them to be too costly might find that eggs could end up
being cheaper and provide around the same amount of whey.
It is important to remember, however, that this is not the case with all whey protein products, which is why
people need to pick and choose theirs with care.

For more information about the advantages of getting 100% whey,

    M. Night shot to fame in 1999 with his film The Sixth Sense, which celebrated turning
    25-years-old in August.

Shyamalan recently opened up about that film’s impact on his career in an interview with People.

‘At this point, there’s so many generations of people that have watched
[my] different movies,’ the director said.

He added that some, people ‘only know me from [2015 movie]

Shyamalan, who was born in Mahé India but grew up in Penn

    The Sixth Sense.

That set off a string a big hits for the filmmaker that includes Unbreakable (2000), Signs (2002) and The Village (2004), that ultimately ended with the
release of Lady In The Water (2006), which barely covered the $70 million budget.

His biggest box office success was with The Sixth Sense, grossing $672.8

To date, the film made $6.6 million on its first day, including an estimated $2.2 million from the Thursday night previews.

Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first time author dreams of – massive amounts of free publicity online, in newspapers
    and on TV and radio.

And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack on Aston over what was written in his book, The Chairman’s Lounge –
The Inside Story of how Qantas sold us out.

Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which has led to him being called ‘upgrade Albo’ – and calls for an inquiry, Aston told Daily Mail Australia his book is ‘not a hit job on Anthony Albanese’.

Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’, but reiterated that the Prime Minister ‘had a direct line to Alan Joyce’.

The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy on Qantas flights by personally requesting them from the airline’s then CEO Mr Joyce
    – which the Prime Minister has categorically denied.

According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of the 22 flights
Mr Albanese got upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips
to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu.

But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose to shoot
the messenger and, in turn, shot himself in the foot.

He said Aston was using the accusations to
sell books and said he was hiding his employment history.

    ‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal Party staffer… I don’t see declarations he’s a former Qantas
    employee,’ the Prime Minister said.

But before the book even gets to the contents page there is a photo of Aston that refers
to him as the then-Qantas corporate communications senior
    adviser.

Joe Aston (pictured) got the kind of book launch every first time author
dreams of – massive amounts of free publicity online,
in newspapers and on TV and radio

Anthony Albanese (right) is pictured with his fiance Jodie Haydon (left) and
then Qantas CEO Alan Joyce on March 31, 2023 in Sydney, Australia

And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked for
then-Liberal MP Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney seat of Cook before Scott Morrison.

‘My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed,
it’s in the first line of the first page of the book,’ Aston said on Tuesday night, just before his
    book launch.

Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese’s response gave the book,
Aston was still ‘staggered’ at the untrue claims about him the Prime Minister made.

‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this
many times with public figures and leaders who struggle to see their own part in it, the
terrible circumstances that they create,’ he said.

Extravagant Qantas perk Anthony Albanese FAILED to declare is revealed…
    after two days of denials

Asked if Mr Albanese had been poorly advised in his attack, Aston,
who is a former Australian Financial Review columnist, wonders if
the Prime Minister ‘even listens to advice at this
    point’.

‘All he’s doing is talking around the issue and he’s blaming me and he’s blaming other MP’s for also taking upgrades (on Qantas flights).

‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk about, which is, did you ask Qantas for confirmed upgrades on your private holidays when you were the Transport Minister?
The answer is «yes» and he’s desperately trying to avoid saying
    it.’

Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said
the Prime Minister should refer himself to the anti-corruption commission over the flight
    upgrades.

Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase
of a $4.3million clifftop mansion while so many people are struggling to pay their mortgage
or rent, the latest blow to his credibility has led to calls for him to resign.

Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though.

‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this part to get this far.
I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is pictured with the then Qantas CEO Alan Joyce

Anthony Albanese is pictured on August 14, 2023 as Qantas unveiled its Yes23 livery in support of a
Yes vote in the Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum

Among the movers and shakers at Joe Aston’s book launch
in the ritzy Hemmesphere club in Sydney was Tabcorp director David Gallop (pictured)

Paul Barry (pictured in blue shirt), the host of the ABC’s Media Watch show, was also at the launch

‘So to the extent that it has, I would say … anyone who
reads the book will learn that this book is not a hit job on Anthony Albanese.

    This book is about Qantas.

‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences politicians on both sides of the
aisle, Labor, Liberal, National, you name it. They’ve been doing it for more than a generation.

‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia. I’m not here
trying to get a scalp. That’s not what this book is about and it never was.’

But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the conversations
being had across Australia and eventually winds up back on Mr Albanese.

‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public is with
the freebie mindset of politicians,’ he said.

Guests at Joe Aston’s book launch on Tuesday night are pictured pointing for emphasis or to someone they recognise

There was no shortage of free alcohol (pictured) available at the launch of Joe
    Aston’s book

Joe Aston is pictured in the exclusive Hemmesphere club in Sydney, where his
book The Chairman’s Lounge was launched

‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a
long time and that kind of behaviour is quite normalised to him, is what I’ve seen.

‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at the front
row of the Australian Open Tennis.

‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every year for 12
years and he was the only Prime Minister (I saw there).

‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the front row of the International Grand Slam.

He’s the first Prime Minister who I’ve ever seen do that.

‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it looks like
to others when he’s on the gravy train. And I think (the claims
in the book are) just another example of that.’

In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s travel to be
booked in economy, then someone in their office phones the airline and asks if their flight can be
    upgraded.

The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he had a very direct line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.

‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where it’s in the booking and if the
seat’s empty when the flight closes, you’ll get upgraded.

‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where the ticket is converted and you are guaranteed.
You’re not going to the airport crossing your fingers going «Geez, I hope there is a spare seat».

‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat and the
only person at Qantas who can issue those types of upgrades is the CEO.
No other executive can do that.

‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades (for Anthony Albanese).’

Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes during his time as a travel journalist,
and understands the attraction for politicians to get up there.

‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too.

Once you’ve experienced the front of the plane,
it’s very hard to go back.

‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff and they’ve got chauffeured cars and
they fly in business, but they don’t get paid like CEOs …

‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford to go
flying around in the front of the plane on personal travel.

‘A normal person would say «Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’

Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.

But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events.

Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.

‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Qantas for comment.

The Chairman’s Lounge – The Inside Story of how Qantas sold us out, by Joe Aston, is available now in bookshops and from online retailers

WHAT IS THE QANTAS CHAIRMAN’S LOUNGE?

The Qantas Chairman’s Lounge is an invitation-only club approved by the company chairman, with the guest list a closely-guarded secret.

It has been dubbed ‘the most exclusive club in the country’ and comes with a distinct black card.

Members include senior-ranking MPs such as ministers, state premiers and the Prime Minister, leaders of major unions and sporting groups, Qantas ambassadors, selected A-list celebrities, major corporate figures and high-profile media personalities.

The clubs can be found in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide airports but are not signposted – you have to know where to look.

Inside you will find expensive wood and brass furnishings, wool carpet and marble flooring, all bathed in natural light.

Members enjoy fine à la carte dining with a complimentary premium array of beers, spirits and Australian wines. Wine bottles are often given as departing gifts.

Facilities may also include spas, showers and an assortment of books and magazines.

Members may bring in two guests at a time.

Lounge attendants personally alert you when your flight is ready to board, and your personal preferences are logged for each flight.

Membership also entitles you to first-class facilities at Qantas partner airlines.

Des électeurs attendent l’ouverture d’un bureau de vote à Windhoek, le 29 novembre 2024 en Namibie

Namibians returned to vote on Friday in 36 polling stations reopened two days after a chaotic election, set to test the
ruling party’s 34-year grip on power, was marred by technical problems.

Tensions are mounting in the historically stable and peaceful southern African nation where Wednesday’s election was marked by long delays and labelled a
    «sham» by the opposition.

Some people waited 12 hours in line to vote in presidential and legislative
polls, billed as the toughest yet for the South West Africa
People’s Organisation (SWAPO) party, in power since Namibia’s 1990 independence from South africa.

Wednesday’s queues were caused by many technical problems, including issues with tablets used to register voters and shortages of ballot papers.

In some cases, torches used to show up invisible ink had run out of batteries and
mobile voting teams had left areas with voters still in the
    queues, it said.

Facing criticism from both voters and parties, the electoral commission extended the
vote for a second time, giving Namibians until Saturday evening to vote.

In the capital Windhoek, at the only polling station picked to reopen,
about 60 people showed up on Friday, including Kluivert Muuondjo
    who arrived at 4:30 am.

The 21-year-old student said he had waited in line until 11:
00 pm on Wednesday but left before being able to vote as he had exams the next day.

Des électeurs attendent l’ouverture d’un bureau de vote à
Windhoek, le 29 novembre 2024 en Namibie

«Everyone will have the chance to vote,» he said.

But because Namibians can vote at any given polling station, he was worried «everyone will flock to one place again.»

The disarray led to angry complaints from opposition parties with some calling for a halt in the electoral process.

Opposition parties were scheduled to meet
on Friday and issue a joint statement, according to Christine Aochamus
who represents the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) party.

Youth unemployment, enduring inequalities and the emergence of a generation born after
independence are challenging support towards SWAPO which has ruled since 1990.

Its candidate, vice-president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who could become the first woman to
lead the country if elected, could face an unprecedented second round in the mineral
    rich country.

«To open only one place in Khomas (the region of which the capital is part of) is absurd,» said voter Ensley Engermund, who also said he couldn’t vote on Wednesday because of long queues despite trying four different
    polling stations.

«Only 1.5 millions voters are registered and we get this chaos?» asked the 49-year-old security agent.

«It was to get people frustrated.»

Lady Gaga is set to release her seventh studio album in February.

Despite lead single Disease stalling on the Hot 100 at No.
27, the 38-year-old is forging ahead with her next album, which she described
    as both ‘fun’ and ‘darker.’

Speaking to Vogue magazine about the project, Gaga said that she’s been focused
on the production side of her new songs.

‘I love producing — I always have — and something that was really important to me making my seventh studio album was
blending live instrumentation with programming,’ she
    explained.

‘The album is chaotic from a genre perspective — it is genre-bending, and I think in that
way is a deeply personal look into my mind as a producer and the
    way I think about music.’

She also said that the album has a ‘darker pop’ sound that’s more in line with her
iconic 2009 album, The Fame Monster.

However, fans need not be worried that Gaga is going too
    somber with her sound.

‘The album is not extremely serious in that
it’s very fun and meant to be enjoyed at a party, in a
club, or at home having personal fun time — to be
free of your worries at home or walking through
    life,’ she insisted.

Lady Gaga is focused on releasing her seventh studio album
this February following the disappointing reception to
    lead single Disease

Gaga released the album’s lead single Disease last month to rave reviews from music critics, who lauded it as a return to the star’s roots.

Unfortunately, the acclaim failed to translate to the charts,
with Disease debuting at No. 27 on the Hot 100 – her worst entry for a lead single in 16 years.

On the bright side, Gaga is currently enjoying one of her biggest hits in years thanks to her Bruno
Mars duet, Die With a Smile.

The ballad has so far reached No. 2 on the Hot 100 and No.
1 on the Pop Airplay Chart.

It comes after Gaga’s leading role in the disastrous Joker:
    Folie à Deux.

The follow-up to the Oscar-winning 2019 film, starring Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck (Joker) and Gaga
as Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn), faced negative reviews from critics before its
October 4 release and flopped at the box office.

Tim, 39, who played a guard at Arkham Asylum in the movie, said Todd Philips’s new film has ‘no plot’ and admitted he knew it was
    ‘going to bomb’ while filming.

Speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Tim said: ‘It’s the
    worst film ever made.

Gaga told Vogue magazine that she’s been focused on the production side of her new
    songs

Gaga released the album’s lead single Disease last month to rave reviews from music critics, but the song
    flopped on the Hot 100

‘I think what happened, after the first Joker, there was a lot of talk like, «Oh, this was loved by incels. This was loved by the wrong kinds of people. This sent the wrong kind of message. Male rage! Nihilism!»
    All these think pieces.

‘And then I think, «What if we went the other way,» and now
they have Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga tap dancing to a point
    where it’s insane,’ he continued.

‘It has no plot. We would sit there, me and these other guys were all dressed in these security outfits because we’re working at the Arkham Asylum,
and I would turn to one of them and we’d hear this crap and I’d go, «What the f*** is this?» And they’d go,
«This is going to bomb, man.» I go, «This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen.»

‘We were talking about it at lunch, and we’d go, «What is the plot? Is there a plot? I don’t know, I think he falls in love with her in the prison?» It’s not even hate-watchable.

    That’s how terrible it is.’

    M. Night shot to fame in 1999 with his film The Sixth Sense, which celebrated turning

Shyamalan recently opened up about that film’s impact on his career in an interview with People.

‘At this point, there’s so many generations of
people that have watched [my] different
    movies,’ the director said.

He added that some, people ‘only know me from [2015 movie] The Visit from then on, so they
don’t even know about The Sixth Sense. So when I think about that,
    it’s wild.’

‘Each movie, I feel this way — that I don’t know if it’ll ever get made.
I don’t know if I’ll ever get to make another one… «If this is the last one, I want it to just represent me,»‘ he continued.

Dubbed ‘Shyamaween,’ the Sixth Sense director, 54, dressed as the Joker from the recently

Shyamalan, who was born in Mahé India but grew up in Penn Valley,
Pennsylvania, released two films in the 1990s
    before The Sixth Sense.

That set off a string a big hits for the
filmmaker that includes Unbreakable (2000), Signs (2002)
and The Village (2004), that ultimately ended with
the release of Lady In The Water (2006), which barely covered the $70
    million budget.

His biggest box office success was with The Sixth Sense, grossing $672.8 million while working with a $40 million budget 25 years ago.

To date, the film made $6.6 million on its first day,
including an estimated $2.2 million from the Thursday
    night previews.

Anyone who knows me has invariably been subject to a spiel about how much I love Claudia Winkleman. In part, it’s
because she’s so silly, and in part, it’s because I’m a huge fan of
everything she presents, from Strictly to The Traitors.

But even more than any of that, it’s because I’m
obsessed with everything she wears. I’ve spent a fortune copying her
exact outfits, from her Sister Jane heart cutout
dress to a bedazzled Nadine Merabi blazer that I definitely don’t go anywhere
    fancy enough to wear.

Since 2005, Claudia has worked with stylist Sinead McKeefry to perfect her
signature style. I’d describe it as soft goth: lots of black, velvet and chunky knits,
with a fair few sequins and prints (particularly tartan) thrown in.
I’m not alone in my reverence: there are entire Instagram accounts dedicated to tracking down the
presenter’s outfits. But while they offer incredibly useful style inspo, two
issues arise repeatedly: Claudia’s clothes are usually hugely expensive or sold out (or both).

So when the Strictly host stepped out in a typically
preppy black velvet mini dress on Sunday, you’d be forgiven for assuming it was by
some top-end designer. Well, you’d be wrong. The mini dress actually came courtesy of one of our favourite high street brands,
Albaray – and you can pick it up for less than £100.

The dress is made from plush fabric with contrast satin detailing.

The velvet makes it a little festive, perfect for
celebratory bashes over the next few months, particularly when paired with white stilettos à la Claud.
But it could be just as easily dressed down with white trainers
or ballet flats and a trench for a chic office outfit, so
you’ll certainly get your wear out of it.

Like all of Albaray’s products, it’s ethically made using responsible fabric and sent via
a carbon-neutral shipping method, so you can feel good about the dress’s eco-credentials as well as how it looks.

It’s currently in stock in a few sizes online (and in certain John Lewis concessions) but like
most things Claudia wears, it won’t stick around long. Now excuse me while I
    go and add to cart.

Smile 2 – starring Naomi Scott, Lukas Gage and Jack Nicholson’s son Ray – emerged as the winner after a
    horror movie box office showdown.

The fright flick eclipsed hot contender Terrifier 3 for the top spot.

The Smile sequel starring Scott, 31,  as a pop star who begins experiencing
terrifying and inexplicable events as she prepares for
a world tour, opened wide in more than 3,600 theaters, pulling in a payday of $23 million.

Ray, whose mom is Nicholson’s former partner Rebecca Broussard, shocked fans with an eerie
grin in the new movie, which was near-identical to the Oscar-winner’s maniacal smile as Jack Torrance in the 1980 Stanley Kubrick classic,

In a legendary scene, an insane Jack hacks at a bathroom door with an axe as his cowering
wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) screams inside. As he busts a hole in the door,
he sticks his face through, grins and exclaims: ‘Here’s

The original Smile, released in September 2022, and starring Sosie Bacon, was a sleeper hit, which was well received and
    earned $217,408,513 globally.

Smile 2 has received a 83-percent critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes

Up the great staircase trooped the 2,500 guests, resplendent in tiaras
and jewels or white tie and tails, to be
greeted by their hostess, the Marchioness of Londonderry, glamorous
in a clinging black satin Paris dress. Either side of her impressive cleavage
gleamed great swathes of diamonds. Round her neck hung a heavy
row of pearls that fell below her waist. On her head was the largest of the
Londonderry tiaras, so big it was known in the family as ‘the fender’.

Pale rays illuminate the top-lit gallery of Londonderry
    house

Beside her stood her handsome husband Charles, the seventh
Marquess of Londonderry, and the Prime Minister, Lloyd George.
That November night in 1919 was Edith Londonderry’s first Eve of Parliament reception, a tradition that continued
    for 20-odd years.

The Marchioness of Londonderry wears ‘the fender’ to greet guests, 1934

Londonderry House, like many of London’s great houses, was built
for entertaining. In the 18th and 19th centuries, most aristocrats and others who lived on their estates for much of the
year had a town house to which they migrated for ‘the
Season’ – those summer months filled with balls and parties, when débutantes were presented at court
and launched into ‘society’ in the hope of making a splendid marriage.

    The ballroom, Devonshire House

These houses were as magnificent as their owners could manage.

Built and decorated by the most talented of the age, they were
sumptuously furnished – walls were hung with silk, damask and
wonderful paintings – and often embellished with marble statuary.
The mustard-yellow drawing rooms of Londonderry House were filled with blue Sèvres
vases and gold plate; in the entrance hall
stood a Canova statue of Theseus and the Minotaur (now in the Victoria and Albert Museum).
Suites of rooms, with a ballroom at one end, could be flung open for entertaining.

Georgiana Cavendish (1757-1806), a lover of gambling –
    and threesomes

Today most of these palatial mansions have been pulled down or
turned into blocks of flats. With their disappearance
went their furnishings, objets and paintings. But what their wonderful rooms looked like can be seen in London: Lost Interiors, a book compiled from superb black-and-white photographs of these
amazing houses, some of which belonged to aristocratic landowners, others to plutocrats or society figures.

    The drawing room, Grosvenor House

Most of the townhouses – those used for the Season rather than permanent residences – were clustered round Park Lane, Mayfair or on Piccadilly, like
Devonshire House. Here once lived the fifth Duke of Devonshire and his wife Georgiana (pronounced jaw-janer),
whom he had married in 1774 when she was just 17.
She was a celebrated beauty who quickly became a leader of fashion, famous for her towering hairstyles three feet high, decorated with
birds, fruit, even ships in sail. The couple spent 20 years in a ménage à trois with Lady
Elizabeth Foster, Georgiana’s close friend, who was also the Duke’s mistress.
Meanwhile, Georgiana’s gambling led to mounting
debts: on her death in 1806 they were found to be the equivalent of £4 million in today’s
    money.

The rich, restless second Duke of Westminster, AKA Bendor, in his 20s

Another Park Lane mansion was Grosvenor House, belonging to the dukes of Westminster and one of the largest in London, as befitted
the family’s status and wealth (their huge fortune came from their
ownership of Mayfair). Bendor, the blond and handsome
second duke (1879-1953) was known as one of the richest men in England,
lavishing jewels on his mistresses, chief
    among whom was Coco Chanel.

    The picture gallery, Grosvenor House

A restless soul, Bendor would arrive without warning at any of his houses (or yachts).
All were kept ready: cars fuelled, silver polished,
servants in livery. But after the First World War, during which Grosvenor House had been requisitioned as a
hospital, land prices had risen so high that even for Bendor it had become uneconomic and he sold it.
It was demolished in 1927 and the Grosvenor
House Hotel was built on the site.

Designer Oliver Messel, Devonshire House, 1934

At the other end of the scale was 8 Pelham Place, the South
Kensington home of Cecil Beaton from 1940 to 1975. Superbly
furnished by this brilliant photographer, it was described loftily by
the diarist Chips Channon (for whom the word ‘snob’ could have been invented – in his diaries he declares,
‘I am only really happy with royalty’) as ‘a tiny but super-attractive snuffbox of a house’.
Beaton, himself no social slouch, ran him close:
at his parties the women often wore stiletto heels, which pitted the floor, and later he would
point them out, saying, ‘That’s Princess Marina, that’s Julie Andrews, that’s Vivien Leigh…’

French furnishings at 8 Pelham Place, the South
    Kensington home of Cecil Beaton

Beaton’s near neighbour in Pelham Place, until the mid-60s, was the great stage designer Oliver Messel.
When Messel’s nephew Tony Armstrong-Jones (later Lord Snowdon) became engaged
to Princess Margaret, Messel laid on a lunch, asking the Princess if there was
anyone she would particularly like to meet. She
said she had always greatly admired the witty cabaret star Bea Lillie and so Messel invited her.

What none of them knew was that Bea Lillie had a drinking habit.
At the end of lunch she slid quietly under the table and
was carried upstairs to sleep it off. Tony and the Princess took their leave and
Messel rushed back to his studio, where he was busy with fittings for Elizabeth Taylor, only to be interrupted by
    a telephone call.

Cecil Beaton at home in Pelham Place, 1947

‘It’s Kensington Police Station here, Mr Messel,’ said the voice at the other end.
‘We thought you ought to know that there’s a naked
woman on your balcony, throwing bottles
    at everyone who passes by.’

Among the last of these fascinating residences
to survive was the aforementioned Londonderry House.
Throughout the 20s and 30s it had seen receptions and balls, hosted by the Londonderrys for
their four daughters and two granddaughters. When eventually it had
to go, in July 1962, a farewell party for 300 was given by Alastair, the 9th
Marquess. Live sounds were supplied by a blues band featuring a
swaggering young Mick Jagger, no less – presaging the rise of a whole
    new swinging London generation.

Abbie Chatfield has revealed the sexual act she
would never engage in with her partner, Adam Hyde.

The FBoy Island star, 29, recently opened up about
the launch of her ‘kink kit’ sex toys and admitted that when it comes to bedroom fun, it’s
    strictly a two-person affair.

While she does fantasise about having a ménage à trois, Abbie
admitted that it’s something she could never actually go
    through with.

‘I have a fantasy about, like, seeing my partner f*** someone else,’ she told News Corp.

‘But I think I know in my heart that I don’t
actually want to see it. I just want to talk about it like, that’s
    something that I find hot.

‘But in reality, would I want to see that? Maybe, probably not.’

Abbie Chatfield has revealed the sex act she refuses to do with partner Adam Hyde

While she does fantasise about having a ménage à trois, Abbie admitted that it’s something she could never actually go through with.
    Pictured with boyfriend Adam Hyde

‘Like, whenever we get to a point where we’re like, «let’s have a threesome!»,
I’m like, «I don’t actually know if I’m gonna want to see that»,
    ‘ she continued.

Elsewhere in the discussion, Abbie revealed that her Peking Duk frontman partner was the perfect ‘product tester’ for the kit.

‘He had feedback about the length of the flogger,’ she said, referring to the kit’s double-ended paddle.

‘It was a little bit too short after using that on me.’

Abbie’s racy admissions come after she recently urged women to withhold sex from their
    Donald Trump-supporting partners.

In a lengthy Instagram post, in the wake of Donald Trump’s victory over Kamala Harris in the US presidential
election, the reality star told women they should refuse to date or have sex
which anyone who supports his victory.

Alongside a series of posts from her story, she wrote: ‘IF THEY WANT TO TAKE AWAY REPRODUCTIVE FREEDOMS THEN DO NOT LET THEM ENTER YOUR BODY.’

‘I’m done with the idea that men who support Trump (or Andrew Tate) are just
‘lost’ and we should have empathy for them.

They are gleefully posting threats of violence.’

They are laughing at our tears. They already have a SLOGAN in ‘your body my choice’.’

Abbie then told women to not let men with these views ‘near you’ because they are ‘dangerous’.

‘Ask them about their views! They are dangerous and they don’t deserve your presence, emotional or domestic labour.

If your partner was in support of Trump OR EVEN APATHETIC, STOP DOING ANYTHING FOR THEM THAT PATRIARCHY EXPECTS OF YOU!!
They are NOT entitled to your body or time.

‘If they see you as a human they wouldn’t need this explained to them.
    DUMP. THEM.’

She also claimed Trump’s presidency ‘will bring more violence towards women as
men do not care about us’.

‘So stop giving them the perks of a relationship with you.
It isn’t your job. Be with a man who can take care of himself, who won’t expect
sex and who actually sees you as a human being.’

Abbie’s comments echo sentiments from the 4B movement which sprung up in South Korea in the mid 2010’s.

The radical feminist movement, calls for proponents to not date,
get married, have sex, or have children with men.

Following the US presidential election some American women declared solidarity with the movement is a form of
protest against Donald Trump, and his role in the overturning of Roe

Key monthly jobs report due Friday

    *

ISM manufacturing activity at 48.7 in Nov, beating estimates

    (Updates to close)

    By Caroline Valetkevitch

NEW YORK, Dec 2 (Reuters) – The Nasdaq and S&P 500 ended higher on Monday, boosted by tech-related shares after the market posted a strong November,
with investors awaiting this week’s economic data including the
key monthly jobs report on Friday.

The Dow was down slightly on the day. Both the Dow and S&P
500 recorded their biggest monthly percentage gains in a year on Friday.

The technology, communication services and consumer discretionary sectors each rose roughly 1% on Monday, while other
segments were lower. Tesla shares advanced, with Stifel raising its price target on the stock.

«We’re seeing a market that’s in a seasonably strong period just creep higher,» said Rick Meckler, partner at Cherry Lane
Investments, a family investment office in New Vernon, New Jersey.

«It’s a tough time for people to bail out, but by the same token, I don’t see an explosive finish to the year. There’s just too much uncertainty to where we’re headed. … No one is quite sure what the plan is economically with the new administration.»

Former U.S. President Donald Trump recaptured the White House in last month’s election and
his Republican Party swept both houses of Congress, boosting stocks
    in November.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 128.65 points, or 0.29%,
    to 44,782.00, the S&P 500 gained 14.74 points,
or 0.24%, to 6,047.12 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 185.78 points, or 0.97%, to 19,403.95.

Trump’s potential plans for tax cuts and deregulation are
seen as likely to lift the market while tariffs would be negative.

Earlier, data from the Institute for Supply Management showed U.S.
manufacturing activity improved in November, while the final reading of the S&P manufacturing survey was revised upwards to 49.7, compared to a previous
    reading of 48.8.

Super Micro Computer surged after the artificial intelligence server maker began its search for a new finance chief based on recommendations made by a special committee formed to review the
    company’s accounting practices.

If ever there was a reason to spring clean! FEMAIL reveals brilliant new
beauty launches to get you ready for warm weather

With Spring just around the corner, there has never been a better time to clear out the metaphorical cobwebs by sprucing up your home, eliminating
any clutter – and adding a few new brilliant beauty
products that will get you set for the warmer weather from
    head to toe.

Once you have added some extra space on your beauty shelves by Spring cleaning away
any old, unwanted products, there are plenty of newly-launched picks
    to restock your supplies.

Several A-list-loved brands have added innovative new items to their ranges, including celebrity facialist Dr.
Barbara Sturm – whose fans include Hailey Bieber, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kim Kardashian – makeup artist Pat McGrath, and influencer Patrick Starrr.

British beauty pro Charlotte Tilbury has also
added to her skincare line-up, releasing a resurfacing
facial product that she vows will make your skin look ‘reborn’.

Here, Femail rounds up some of the most exciting launches that have hit the shelves in recent weeks – as
well as a sneak peek at some products that will be released in the near future.

    SKINCARE

Brighten up: Lumene’s new Nordic-C [Valo] Fresh Glow Brightening
Gel Mask ($24.99) not only looks like Spring sunshine, it will also help to bring a warm weather glow to your skin courtesy of its ‘skin-brightening vitamin C’,
‘hand-picked wild Arctic ingredients’, and ‘Scandinavian plant extracts’.

Something for everyone: Skin Authority’s soon-to-launch Clarifying Liquid Peel
(left, $24) is the perfect way to clear out any
winter congestion, while keeping your complexion feeling soft and hydrated.
If anti-aging is your main focus, then look no further than Elizabeth Arden’s
new Prevage Anti-Aging Daily Serum 2.0 (center, $162), a revamped version of the brand’s
best-selling product, which it claims has ‘four times the antioxidant power’.

For the eyes, StriVectin’s Intensive Eye Concentrate for Wrinkle Plus (right, $69) promises
to ‘intensively reduce the appearance of crow’s feet and under-eye lines’, meaning you will
walk into warmer weather with your freshest face yet.

A-list favorite: Celebrity facialist Dr. Barbara Sturm, who works with the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow and Hailey
Bieber, has just launched her most powerful anti-aging
product yet, the Super Anti-Aging Face Cream ($360).
According to the brand, this product will ‘deliver both immediate
and long-term anti-aging results’ courtesy of its unique ‘biomimetic formulation’ and
    ‘potent’ ingredients.

Soothe and protect: Jessica Alba’s Honest Beauty’s new Calm & Heal Melting Balm (left, $32.99) is aimed at anyone who
has been struggling with dry winter skin. The formula, which contains hydration-boosting hyaluronic acid, is incredibly soothing, and will protect your skin against any harsh environmental factors.

Meanwhile, the Dr. Jart+ Cicapair Tiger Grass Sleepair Intensive Mask (right,
$39) will help to repair and hydrate your skin overnight as you sleep,
leaving you with smooth, glowing skin come morning.

Intensive: Skincare expert Kate Somerville kicked off 2021 with the brand’s biggest launch of the year, KateCeuticals, its first ever age repair line.
Part of that range includes the Kate Somerville KateCeuticals Total Repair Cream
($120), which was inspired by the popular anti-aging facial at Kate’s clinic in Los
Angeles and promises to ‘improve the look of texture, firmness, and suppleness’.

Glitz and glam: Not only with the INC.redible Party
Recharge Hydrating Hyaluronic Under Eye Masks ($20) help to brighten and hydrate the skin under
your eyes, they will also serve as the perfect selfie accessory
    thanks to their glittery design.

Powerhouse trio: Three essential steps for any skincare routine include a great cleanser,
serum, and SPF, and luckily there are new launches to
cover all of those categories. First, the Image Skincare Iluma Intense Brightening Exfoliating Cleanser (left,
$36), which will boost the skin’s natural ‘luminosity’ which also hydrating the complexion. If dark spots are something
that you struggle with then the La Roche-Posay Glycolic B5 Dark Spot
    Corrector (center, $39.99), a dermatologist-tested formula that
uses glycolic acid to exfoliate and smooth the skin. After using all those acids,
do not forget to layer on the SPF – namely the Bliss Block Star Invisible Daily Sunscreen (right, $23.99) which is a great lightweight option to wear
    alone or under makeup.

Get that glow: Not sure how to get the perfect fake tan look?
Never fear, because these M-61 PowerGlow Peel
Gradual Tan Body Towelettes ($56) are incredibly easy
to use and will leave you with a very natural bronzed look that will
    last all summer long.

Smooth it out: To ensure your skin is at its brightest and most radiant before the summertime, acid exfoliators are
a must – and the Lancome Clarifique Double Essence Refining
Brightening Dual Essence (left, $95), the Charlotte Tilbury Super Radiance Resurfacing Facial Treatment (right, $70),
and the Drunk Elephant Protini Powerpeptide Resurf Serum (right,
$82) are all excellent options that will leave
you looking like you’ve just had the best facial of your life.

Speaking of acids… If you want something easy and travel-friendly, the Babor Refine
RX AHA Peel Pads ($79) are a great option that you can grab and use on the go.

Peace: Give your skin some much needed rest and relaxation overnight,
courtesy of State of Kind’s inaugural product,
Kindly Restore ($65). The ‘multi-tasking sleep concentrate’, which contains
CBD, rosehip seed oil, and bakuchiol oil, works to ‘deeply nourish, hydrate, and repair’ the skin while you get some shut eye.

    MAKEUP

Pack it up: Before you buy a host of new makeup and skincare,
make sure you have somewhere neat and organized to
store it all – like The Beauty Bag by Glossier,
a $28 pouch that looks incredibly fun and colorful, and will also hold more products than you know
what to do with. The bag sold out within minutes of launching, but
more will be back in stock soon so don’t dither
    on this must-have purchase…

Something for everyone: When it comes to lip products, legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath knows her stuff, and the Liquilist range is
no exception. This $200 lineup of liquid lipsticks was originally released as a limited-edition launch, but recently made
a return to the Pat McGrath Labs range after hundreds of
    requests from customers.

Summer fun: MAC Cosmetics new Black Cherry collection immediately conjures up images
of warmer weather thanks to the bright bold colors and
picture-perfect packaging – just look at the vibrant shade of the Black
Cherry Matte Lipstick (left, $20). If bold lipsticks aren’t your thing for Spring,
then why not try the Lanolips Lip Water Liquid Gold (right, $17), a shimmering and hydrating gloss that
will add the perfect glow to your pout, without any annoying
stickiness. And as far as lightweight makeup application goes, Real Techniques’ Miracle Complexion Sponge
(center, $9.99) is a must-have for your beauty bag this summer – particularly as it
is now made with antimicrobial foam that fights off germs, dead
skin cells, and any other nasties that come from daily use.

Go big or go home: Freck Beauty went viral years ago with
its freckle-faking formula (left, $28) – and it has now undergone a serious makeover, complete with sleek new packaging.

The formula is designed to sink into the skin, resulting in a much more natural look than a pencil
can offer. Speaking of natural, Lady Gaga’s Haus Laboratories has just launched a new eyebrow pencil – The
Edge Precision Brow Pencil (right, $20) – which offers
a huge variety of shades to ensure that there really
    is something for everyone.

Go for glam: Inject some serious wow factor into any makeup look with Kiss’ new My Lash
But Better range, a collection of  $4.99 falsies that are meant to look like an amplified version of your own lashes.

Ace of base: Give your makeup look a brilliant boost with a new primer, like the
Burt’s Bees Goodness Glows Hydrating and Illuminating Primer (left,
$11.99), which will add a stunning natural radiance to your
complexion while One/Size’s Secure the Blur Makeup Magnet
Primer (right, $30) will blur and mattify the skin while helping your other products to stay put all day long.

Full spectrum: Nars is one of the best in the business when it
comes to beauty palettes, and the newly-launched Full Dimension Cheek Palette ($49) is no exception. The four-shade offering comes complete
with everything you need to give yourself a beautiful natural glow this summer: bronzer, a highlighter, a
matte blush and a shimmering blush for those days when you
want to ramp up the radiance.

Wow factor: Now for two products that will quite literally leave you open-mouthed in awe upon your first use.
The Deck of Scarlet Metal Leaf Shadow Pot (left, $25) contains a stunning metallic eye shadow that flips to another color in the light,
allowing you to achieve an amazing chameleon-esque look with just one product.
Then there’s the KVD Beauty Good Apple Skin-Perfecting Hydrating Foundation Balm (right, $38),
the latest makeup product to earn a place in the viral hall of
fame after stunning TikTok users with its incredible coverage.

Yeehaw! The Urban Decay Naked Palettes have been a
must-have for makeup lovers for years, and the latest addition to the range – the Wild West Eyeshadow Palette ($49) – is definitely one of
the most fun and colorful to date.

Enhancement: If you’re looking for a natural beauty boost this summer,
the Nyx This Is Milky Gloss (left, $8.50) is the perfect option. Shiny without
being sticky, the formula will hydrate your lips while also adding the most subtle of shades to your
pout. As for the eyes, the Lune + Aster RealGlow Eye Illuminator (center, $24) will help
to brighten and widen those peepers with the most subtle of shimmers.
You can also use it to highlight the brow bone and accentuate the cheekbones.
However if bright and bold is more your thing, treat yourself to a
lipstick from the new limited-edition Rouge Hermes collection (right).
At $72 each, these lipsticks are not the most thrifty on the market,
but the beautiful formula and stunning packaging make them more than worth
    the investment.

Genius! With many people still hesitant to get in-person manicures, DIY nail sessions
have become much more frequent. And thanks to Essie’s new Virtual Try-On Salon, the
process of picking the perfect shade for your nails has
never been easier. You can upload imagery of your own hand,
or pick from a list of models, and then try on each of the brand’s different shades
    for size.

Spring fling: Nothing screams warm weather like some bright and
bold nails, and we are obsessed with the combination of Olive & June’s Hibiscus (left, $8),
a bright and funky pink, and Jin Soon’s Daisy (right, $18), a fresh and bold confetti that will add a fun-loving feel
    to any manicure.

    FRAGRANCE

Feels: We fell in love with Byredo Mixed Emotions ($270) from the moment we heard its name – and thankfully the scent
itself was just as brilliant as its witty moniker.
‘Designed to reflect the tumultuous nature of our times’, Mixed Emotions is a delicious blend of
‘comforting’ notes like maté and ‘reassuring’ scents such as black tea
and violet leaf. It feels like a warm, and beautifully-scented, hug every time
    you apply.

Take your pick: NEST New York has just unveiled a line of perfume oils ($98)
that offer a great alternative to a traditional scent.
Available in four different scents – Indian Jasmine, South Pacific Sandalwood, Turkish Rose,
and Madagascar Vanilla – there is sure to be a fragrance in there to suit everyone.

Getaway: Until it is safe for you to fly to Fiji in person, you can bring the tropical
scents of island life into your home courtesy of Bath
and Body Works’ Beachy Keen three-wick candle
    ($24.50).

    HAIRCARE

Celebrity-approved: At last, we can all start our journey
to getting hair like Jennifer Lopez courtesy of this new hair mask created by her long-time hairstylist Chris Appleton. The
Color Wow x Chris Appleton Money Masque ($45) helps to repair the locks and
leave your hair looking ‘smooth and glossy’, just like J-Lo’s.

Smooth and sleek: After a year of lockdowns and
salon closures, we are all about embracing our natural assets, starting with our hair.
And that means treating our tresses to some extra TLC with brilliant
products like the Maui Moisture Frizz Free +
Shea Butter Leave-In Conditioning Mist (left, $8.99), the Gussi
Hair At-Home Keratin Treatment Kit (center, $65), and the KMS Moist
    Repair Hydrating Oil (right, $25)

Beach babe: Now we may have to steer clear of tropical beaches this year,
but that doesn’t mean we can’t achieve those much-loved beachy waves.
First, wash your locks with the John Frieda Frizz Ease Dream Curls Shampoo and
Conditioner (left, $6.99) to moisturize the locks and enhance your natural curls, and then spritz away with the Oribe
Aprés Beach Wave and Shine Spray (right, $44), which will add the perfect amount of texture.

    BATH AND BODY

Keep up with this Kardashian! Kendall Jenner has stunning pearly whites so
we are happy to take any dental care recommendation from
her – including the newly-launched Moon Essentials Fluoride-Free
Whitening Toothpaste ($3.99) which promises a ‘superior whitening experience’ that comes complete with ‘a perfectly balanced
    mint flavor’

Sweet dreams: Honestly, who doesn’t dream of chowing down on a candy-esque gummy before bed?
And thanks to these Uncle Bud’s CBD Sleep Gummies ($34.99), you can not only
satisfy that sweet tooth, you can enhance your sleep at the same time.

Essentials: If you’re someone who struggles with sensitive skin, then the Dial Clean + Gentle Hypoallergenic
Body Wash (left, $3.99) could be a great option for you – plus
the aloe will help to soothe any sunburn that you suffer this summer.
And if you want to dazzle people with your smile – when it’s safe to remove your
face mask that is – the Go Smile Glow on the Go (right,
    $89) is a must.

All six senior members of the new federal anti-corruption watchdog have
accepted Qantas Chairman’s Lounge memberships as calls grow to refer Anthony Albanese
over the perks he took from the airline.

Gift disclosure logs for the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC)
leadership positions show commissioners are all part of Australia’s ‘most
exclusive club’ the Chairman’s Lounge membership extended by invite only
    by the Qantas chair.

This has raised concerns over how impartial the body would be
    when dealing with Qantas matters.

If Mr Albanese has requested flight upgrades from former
Qantas CEO Alan Joyce directly, as reported in a new book, he may have fallen foul of the strict Ministerial Code of Conduct which prohibits ministers from
    seeking ‘any kind of benefit’

    Commissioner Paul Brereton declared Chairman’s
Lounge membership in 2023, as did the CEO Philip Reed and deputy commissioners Jaala Hinchcliffe and Nicole Rose, Sky News reported
    on Wednesday.

Deputy commissioners Ben Gauntlett and Kylie Kilgour declared their membership
in February 2024, which means it was after the NACC
    began operation in July 2023.

NACC Commissioner Paul Brereton declared his Chairman’s
    Lounge membership in 2023

An NACC spokesperson confirmed the Commissioner, three deputy commissioners and CEO are
    members of the Chairman’s lounge.

‘This does not impact the integrity of the Commission,’ the spokesman said.

‘Each of the statutory office holders has made appropriate declarations in regards
to Chairman’s lounge membership in the NACC Gifts and Benefits register.

‘Qantas is not a Commonwealth agency within the Commission’s jurisdiction.’

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton and his deputy Sussan Ley have said the
Prime Minister should refer himself to the NACC over 22 upgrades and extra
Chairman’s Lounge memberships received from Qantas.

An insight into the type of service offered by the
Chairman’s Lounges was offered by a job ad posted on employment site Indeed for the one at Canberra Airport.

The ad, placed by hotel group Accor that Qantas contracts
to run the lounges, stated they were seeking ‘a highly motivated
Food & Beverage Attendant to join our experienced and
    professional Front of House team’.

‘This role is based within the Chairman’s Lounge, a small fine dining restaurant and lounge area that offers an a la carte menu designed
by Neil Perry Consulting,’ the ad states.

‘Service is discrete yet attentive, providing friendly and efficient
food and beverage offerings that meets our passengers’ expectations.’

A job ad for the Canberra Qantas Chairman’s Lounge sets out the requirements to serve the high
    and mighty

Applicants must ‘have experience working in a fine dining environment and the ability to
work a seven- day rotating roster.

The claims Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy when booking Qantas flight by personally requesting them from Mr Joyce are
made in a new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe
    Aston.

Aston alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce while in his various parliamentary
jobs, which included Minister for Transport to ask for special upgrades that only the CEO could dole out for himself
    or his family.

According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the
22 flights Mr Albanese received upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome,
    London, Los Angeles and Honolulu.

The book also revealed that as well as son Nathan having
a ‘plus one’ Chairman’s Lounge membership Mr Albanese’s partner Jodie Haydon did as well.

Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that all were ‘declared in the appropriate way’.

WHAT IS THE QANTAS CHAIRMAN’S CLUB?

The Qantas Chairman’s Lounge is an invitation-only club
approved by the company chairman, with the guest list a closely-guarded secret.

It has been dubbed ¿the most exclusive club in the country¿ and comes with a distinct black card.

Members include senior-ranking MPs including ministers, state premiers and the
Prime Minister, leaders of major unions and sporting groups,
Qantas ambassadors, selected A-list celebrities, major corporate figures and high-profile media personalities.

The clubs can be found in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra,
Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide but are not signed, you have to
    know where to look.

Inside you will find expensive wood and brass furnishings, wool carpet and marble flooring all bathed in natural light.

Members enjoy fine à la carte dining with a complimentary premium array of beers, spirits and Australian wines.
Wine bottles are often given as departing gift

Facilities may also include spas, showers and an assortment of books and magazines.

Members may bring in two guests at a time.

Lounge attendants personally alert you when your flight is
to board and your personal preferences are logged

The days when we were all content to sip from a fat-lipped, sturdy, intelligent
    wineglass is over.

Maximilian Riedel, the 11th new release of famed Riedel glassmaker and CEO of Riedel
Crystal the united states, likes to name those ‘joker glasses,’ and he has
a point. We most likely shouldn’t be sipping excellent wine from utilitarian vessels.
Preaching the gospel of making use of suitable stemware, Mr.
Riedel is indeed a true believer. Rightfully so,
his household company is responsible for whatever a revolution within the wineglass business.

Yet this begs the question, does the wine glass matter that so much?

A certain lot within the community will have you believe that
the shape of a wineglass has no effect on the taste
you the wine being savoured. This, for the wine loving community is nothing but a grave
    sin.

After years and years of wine tasting, connoisseurs have an unanimous opinion and
that has been well known and accepted- the perfect wineglass is the perfect
    companion for the perfect wine.

    But which wineglasses to buy?

Do a small experiment: pour your favourite wine in a coffee cup, a rocks glass and
an excellent wine stem. You will experience the fullest from the thin-lipped,
svelte profile of a suitable wineglass that makes
it possible for swirling, considering air is
wine’s excellent friend. If your wine is stuffed
right into a tiny bowl, an oddly formed mug or, a
pink Solo cup, good, you’ll fail to notice the nuances in aroma and style.

But, most of us cannot afford to buy a wineglass for each
grape varietal (currently Riedel presents wineglasses for everything from Chardonnay and Pinot
Noir to Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon). So we suggest buy the varietal specific glass
of the varietal you enjoy the most. When you love Pinot Noir,
buy a Pinot Noir glass, for instance. The other trick is to
Spend approx. The same amount of money per glass that you
simply do to your bottle of wine.

It has been said that drinking bubbles from a wide-mouthed wineglass as it enhances the experience completely.

Andrea Robinson, sommelier for Delta Air strains, grew so frustrated with
the ‘which stem for what wine’ dialog that she got
down to make The ONE-one excellent stem for all reds and
one ideal stem for all whites. Robinson spent over three years
constructing the prototypes for her glasses.
After years of tastings and research, Robinson concluded that the 2 nice shapes
to begin from had been Pinot Noir glasses for reds and Sauvignon Blanc glasses for whites.

Riedel puts some love into every wine glass they make. It’s slightly lavish and overly scientific,
however the enthusiasts find it irresistible. «We see glass as an instrument designed to highlight specifics from the DNA of all grape varieties. Our stems are designed in style workshops, now not on computer systems or on a drawing pad.» Maximilian likes to point out.
Riedel confesses to having a favourite stem-and for good rationale.
«My favourite glass has an emotional connection; it’s the first varietally specified glass ever created (with the aid of my grandfather), a pinot noir glass (the Riedel Sommeliers Burgundy Grand Cru / Pinot Noir Wine Glass)which holds 37 oz., greater than a single bottle. His different fave? The Vinum Excel which used to be at first developed to compliment Oregon Pinot Noir. «i admire this shape for
many causes; it’s a multi-tasking glass. Even the cellar grasp at Dom Perignon uses it
    for their rose old Champagnes.»

In India, wine sommeliers and enthusiasts have slowly yet steadily taken up the daunting task of introducing the concept of wineglasses affecting the taste of wine.

For a long time, people were content with buying one standard flute or broad shaped glass and that was that. But with the advent of regular exchange of information and the constant need to maximise the experiences of luxury, it was but little surprise that wine glasses and their variety would slowly found their place in India as well.

At present there are as many stem options as there are wines. Schott Zwiesel’sTritan line boasts a floor finish supposed to fortify the wineglass-ideal for keeping inebriated social gathering-goers from breaking the glasses. They are also promoting a completely new tasting glass called ‘Airome’, which in keeping with the website is «a built-in aroma wave, » designed to enable extra space within the glass for the wine to breathe.

Nowadays you can get wine glasses in India from a variety of places, be it your local lifestyle store or a chic global boutique in a quaint location in town. But Wine aficionados find ordering online the best solution. A wide array of websites sells wineglasses in India. Not only are they well stocked but also offer the necessary variety a connoisseur looks for.

It is also possible to buy original Riedel wineglass series online. But locally crafted wine glasses within India are nothing short of perfection themselves. The craftsmanship is boast-worthy and the experience, in no way, falls short.

The constant talk about whether all the pain of choosing the right wine glass is worth it or not, is simply put to rest with time and experience. Once you start enjoying and admiring the variety of wine, the point about the glasses automatically slip into the conversation.

Certainly, the talk these days is extra about which stem one will have to buy and whether or not longer the wine stem will have an impact on the type of wine. As is so quite often the case with the fruit of the vine, that reply is personal. Riedel has been known to sum up when asked what each good wine stem should have, and he went on to say «excellent wine to share.» Oh, and the foremost rule of them all? Wash the wine glasses the next day, now not after you’ve emptied the bottle. Visit wine & Beer Glasses
