250ɡ English veal mince
2 tbsp finely grated parmesan, ⲣlus extra to serve
4 anchovies, finesly chopped
2 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley
salt ɑnd fresahly gdound black pepper
350ց dried spaghetti, to serve (optional; ѕee
tip)
1 First mаke a tomato sauce. In ɑ saucepan, heat a dash of olive oil over ɑ medium heat, then add half tһe chopped onion annd
half thee garlic, tһen sauté ffor 10 minutes tߋ soften. Ꭺdd tthe tomatoess and ᴡhen the liquid ѕtarts tо bubble, reduce tօ
а simjer and leave tⲟ cook, stirring occasionally (about
20 minutes, to ϲreate a thiϲk sauce), while yߋu mɑke the meatballs.
2 In a bowl, soak the bread іn the milk until soft.
In another bowl, mix tһe beef, veal, parmesan, anchovies, half tһe parsley ɑnd the rest оf thee onions and
garlic. Τhen ɑdd the soaked bread, lightly squeezing аny excess miilk fгom it firѕt.
Mix well and season ѡith salt and pepper. Mould the mixture into 12-14 meatballs.
3 Ⲣut the 4 tablespoons оf olivee oil
in а largfe frying pan ovеr a medium heat. Whhen hot,
аdd tthe meatballs, tսrning (for aƄout 5 minutes) tto ensure tһey colour alⅼ ovеr.
If necessary, cook inn batches sо they aare not all squashed tⲟgether, setting ｅach batch aswide ᧐n a plate whіle yoou coook tһe remainder.
4 Ƭo finish, remove tһe meatballs fгom the pan and set аsіde.
Ροur the tomato sauce іnto the frying pan ovdr a
medium heat. Рut thｅ meatballs ƅack into thee pan for a fuгther 4-5 minutes
to cook thｒough. Sprinkle with thе remining
parsley ƅefore serving.
ΤIP You ccan serve tһе meatballs аs they come, or оn tоp of spaghetti.
Ιf you ѡould prefer the ⅼatter, cook tһe pasta aсcording to the packet instructions սntil ɑl
dente. Drain іt in a colander, reserving a cupful of the cookiing water to loosen thee meatball sauce
іf necesѕary, ɑnd then transfer it bacҝ to the pan ɑnd toss it with a ⅼittle olive
oil аnd butter. Put tһe spaghetti on ɑ serving plate and tօp witһ
tһe meatballs and sauce. Finish with a drizzle of olive ooil ɑnd ɑ sprinkle of parmesan.

Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first time author dreams of – massive amounts of free publicity online, in newspapers
and on TV and radio.
And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack on Aston over
what was written in his book, The Chairman’s Lounge – The
Inside Story of how Qantas sold us out.
Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which has led to him being called ‘upgrade Albo’
– and calls for an inquiry, Aston told Daily Mail Australia his book is ‘not a
hit job on Anthony Albanese’.
Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’, but reiterated that the Prime Minister ‘had a direct line to Alan Joyce’.
The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy on Qantas flights by personally requesting them from the airline’s
then CEO Mr Joyce – which the Prime Minister has categorically denied.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese got upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London,
Los Angeles and Honolulu.
But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose to shoot the
messenger and, in turn, shot himself in the foot.
He said Aston was using the accusations to sell books and said he was hiding his employment history.
‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal Party
staffer… I don’t see declarations he’s a former Qantas employee,’ the Prime Minister said.
But before the book even gets to the contents page there is a photo of Aston that refers to him as the then-Qantas corporate communications senior adviser.

And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked for
then-Liberal MP Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney
seat of Cook before Scott Morrison.
‘My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed, it’s in the first line of the
first page of the book,’ Aston said on Tuesday night, just before his book launch.
Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr
Albanese’s response gave the book, Aston was still
‘staggered’ at the untrue claims about him the Prime
Minister made.
‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this many times with public figures and leaders who struggle to
see their own part in it, the terrible circumstances that they create,’ he said.

in his attack, Aston, who is a former Australian Financial Review columnist, wonders if the Prime
Minister ‘even listens to advice at this point’.

also taking upgrades (on Qantas flights).
‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk about, which is, did you ask Qantas for confirmed upgrades on your private holidays when you were the Transport Minister?
The answer is «yes» and he’s desperately trying to avoid saying it.’
Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said
the Prime Minister should refer himself to the anti-corruption commission over
the flight upgrades.
Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase of a $4.3million clifftop mansion while so many people are struggling
to pay their mortgage or rent, the latest blow to his credibility has
led to calls for him to resign.
Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though.
‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this part to get
this far. I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.

‘So to the extent that it has, I would say … anyone who reads the book will learn that this book is not a hit job on Anthony
Albanese. This book is about Qantas.
‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences
politicians on both sides of the aisle, Labor, Liberal, National, you
name it. They’ve been doing it for more than a generation.
‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia.
I’m not here trying to get a scalp. That’s not what this book is about
and it never was.’
But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the conversations being had across Australia and
eventually winds up back on Mr Albanese.
‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public is with the freebie
mindset of politicians,’ he said.

‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a long time and that kind of behaviour is quite normalised to
him, is what I’ve seen.
‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting
at the front row of the Australian Open Tennis.
‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every year for 12 years and he
was the only Prime Minister (I saw there).
‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the front row of
the International Grand Slam. He’s the first Prime Minister who I’ve ever
seen do that.
‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it looks like
to others when he’s on the gravy train. And I think (the claims in the book are) just another example of that.’
In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s travel to be booked in economy,
then someone in their office phones the airline and asks if their flight can be upgraded.
The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he had a very direct
line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.
‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where it’s in the booking and if the seat’s empty when the flight
closes, you’ll get upgraded.
‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where the ticket
is converted and you are guaranteed. You’re not going
to the airport crossing your fingers going «Geez, I hope there is a spare seat».
‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat and the only person at Qantas who can issue those types of upgrades is the CEO.
No other executive can do that.
‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades (for
Anthony Albanese).’
Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes
during his time as a travel journalist, and understands the attraction for politicians to get up there.
‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too.
Once you’ve experienced the front of the plane, it’s very hard to go back.
‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff and they’ve got chauffeured cars and they
fly in business, but they don’t get paid like CEOs …
‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford to
go flying around in the front of the plane on personal travel.
‘A normal person would say «Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’
Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.
But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events.
Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.
‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

The highly anticipated Joker sequel hit theaters on Friday, but immediately, it was fiercely panned by viewers and critics alike.
Amid the scrutiny, a clip of Lady Gaga and Joaquin discussing the film has taken over the web.
While chatting with Good Morning Britain last week, the two
stars were asked if the movie turned out to be ‘everything they expected.’

and smiled.

For a few seconds, the two stars sat in silence as they both
waited for the other to answer the question.
‘Tell them how you feel, Joaquin,’ Lady Gaga, 38, said to her costar as
she held out a fake microphone in front of him.
‘It’s so hard to talk about but I think we feel like we achieved what we set out to do,’ Joaquin, 49, simply stated.
Someone on X, formerly Twitter, posted the moment online last week and it went viral, gaining more then 437,000 views in a matter of days – and many users took their
initial silence as proof that they ‘didn’t like’
the film.
The internet has been flooded with negative posts about
the flick ever since it premiered, with one user branding it as
a ‘bore’ and another claiming it had ‘no plot.’
Many social media users have also slammed the movie’s final
scene, which saw main character Arthur Fleck (portrayed by
Joaquin) brutally stabbed to death by a fellow inmate.
This meant that the man that audiences had been watching over
the course of the two movies was never the Joker at all, but in fact, the infamous villain from the Batman series was really just the random
inmate who killed Arthur in the last moments of the film.
The shocking twist left numerous viewers unsatisfied, and they took to social
media to share their frustration.

‘The ending made the movie a complete waste,’ one outraged user wrote.
‘The ending was pathetic,’ scathed someone else. ‘WTF you mean no Joker?’
‘The ending made no sense,’ added another person.
‘That ending? It’s so bad that not only it ruins Joker
2 but also the first Joker for the audience,’ read a fourth tweet.
‘The Joker had so much potential but that f**king ending ruined everything,’ a fifth said.
The Todd Phillips-directed musical serves as a follow-up
to the 2019 box office hit, which was simply titled Joker.
The first film grossed over $1 billion and at the time was the highest-grossing R-rated
film of all time. It received 11 Oscar nominations – two of
which it won.
The sequel, however, has already been much less
successful. It had a lackluster $40 million debut at the box office in its first weekend,
and has a low rating of 33 percent and 31 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
‘Undoing much of the goodwill from its predecessor, the sequel
convolutes what could have been a unique character study into a bloated encore
that goes out with a whimper,’ reads one review.
Another critic wrote, ‘This movie is a disjointed mess and a waste of time.
It’s just tired, not particularly interesting, but it does look good from a production design standpoint.’

Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is at the heart of their reason for entering Parliament in the first
place hear themselves?
In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments
against proposed electoral reforms that the major parties look set
to come together to support.
The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate, caps on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to prevent the equivalent
of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what any party can spend at an election – actually less than the major parties currently spend.
The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations, thus increasing the transparency of who
makes political donations in the first place.
So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their cash
to influence election outcomes – and the extent to which
they can use their wealth at all will be limited.
The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed and frequency that disclosures of donations need to be made.
At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made –
but you only find out the details of who has given what
to whom many months later, well after elections are won and lost.
In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much greater transparency and far less
big money being injected into campaigning by the wealthy.
Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’ with the policy and warned the reform would ‘not stop the rot’

Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to $16,000 under the current rules, will need to disclose having done
so. And how much they can donate will be capped.
Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed
new laws, labeling them a ‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not a reform’.
They have lost their collective minds after finding
out that Labor’s proposal just might secure the support of the opposition.
I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write this column.
Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency measures stamping out the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by
the virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals,
in a united crossbench effort to drag the major parties closer to accountability.
More fool me.
The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put forward by Labor and is opposed by a growing
cabal of crossbenchers.
It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply,
the Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this
issue.
Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors such
as Clive Palmer
Another potential target of the laws is businessman and Teal funder Simon Holmes à Court
The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations

The major parties have long complained about
the influence the likes of Simon Holmes à Court wields behind the
scenes amongst the Teals.
And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the wealthy
in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules.
Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are running a mile
from reforms that will curtail dark art of political donations.
The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency
rules to take effect immediately, by the way. It won’t be some
sort of quick-paced power play before the next election designed
to catch the crossbench out.
They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough
time to absorb and understand the changes before preparing for them.
Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and
the Coalition. I imagine the opposition want to
go over the laws with a fine tooth comb.
As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which would create loopholes only the unions are capable of
taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the years to come.
But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a
deal to get these proposed laws implemented, the crossbench should offer their
support, not cynical opposition, to what is being advocated for.
They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could be incorporated in the package.
To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about being in politics to ‘clean things up’.

Jackie O Henderson has left her father Tony red-faced after a shocking stunt in which he was tricked
into reading about her threesome live on-air.
The awkward family exchange occurred on Tuesday’s Kyle and
Jackie O Show when the radio queen and co-host Kyle Sandilands
were discussing Jackie’s new memoir The
Whole Truth.
Before getting her father on the line, Jackie
explained to listeners that she was about to get an unsuspecting
Tony to read an excerpt that detailed a night of passion with then boyfriend ‘Ugly’ Phil O’Neil and a 19-year-old
stripper.
‘So this is going back to my Gold Coast days when I had met Phil who [later became] my first husband,’ the 49-year-old explained.
‘I had only just met him at this point. I think [we were] two months into seeing each other.’
Jackie then prompted her unprepared father to read the excerpt that detailed Phil’s
living situation with the stripper and another, rather unsavory ‘stoner’
flatmate.
‘He lived in a place in Main Beach that felt like a motel with two weird flatmates.
One was a stoner guy who would sit there blazed
out of his gourd,’ Tony read from Jackie’s book.

Despite the raciness of the content he had just read from his daughter’s book, Tony admitted he was
not shocked by the revelations.
‘Am I amazed? Probably not,’ he said.
‘I’m sort of trying to take all of this in. After all, its my daughter we’re
talking about. If it was somebody else, it would be a different story altogether.
I’d be so excited.
‘I’ve been round the block a few times. I understand
how these things happen.’
Another passage in the book revealed a very awkward encounter between Phil’s male flatmate and Jackie’s mother Julie.
‘My mum came over once and when no one answered the door, she put her face to the screen to see inside and that flatmate was right there in the living room, pants down, w***ing,’ a shocked Tony read.
The revelations come after Jackie spoke for the first
time about her years-long battle with drugs which saw her
secretly go to rehab at The Betty Ford Clinic in November in 2022.
During a tearful on-air admission, Jackie said at the height of her addiction, she took around 10-12 Stilnox/Ambien sleeping pills
and 24 Panadeine Forte painkillers a day.

Anthony Albanese has tried to claim his relationship with
Alan Joyce was a strictly professional one between a Prime
Minister and a corporate titan, as he battles claims the Qantas boss was his ‘personal travel agent’ for
free flights and upgrades.
However that characterization of the relationship
was at odds with that made by Mr Joyce, who said he was ‘good mates’
with Mr Albanese and had been ‘for years’.
In the wake of the explosive claims that the Prime Minister had Mr Joyce arrange
free tickets and upgrades, Mr Albanese distanced himself from
the Qantas chief.
When asked about about their relationship on Sunday Mr
Albanese implied it was purely in a professional capacity, having been Transport
Minister and shadow transport spokesperson before becoming Prime Minister.
‘He (Joyce) was the CEO of the national airline …
I had the same relationship with him that I have with
John Borghetti as the CEO of Virgin,’ Mr Albanese said.
That assessment was at odds with the many photos showing Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce
apparently greatly enjoying each other’s company.
Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce were pictured in high
spirits on the red carpet at the Qantas 100th Gala Dinner in March last year.
In photos from the event, Mr Joyce proudly walks the red carpet with one arm around the
prime minister and the other around Mr Albanese’s partner, Jodie Haydon.
Just five months later, in August, a smiling Mr Albanese attended Qantas’s unveiling
of it’s special ‘Yes 23′ emblazoned airplanes for the Voice
referendum.

Mr Joyce was seen touching Mr Albanese’s arm, with the PM bursting into laughter.

launch of the Qantas’ landmark Perth to London flight in March, 2018.
During a Senate hearing in September 2023, Mr Joyce said he had been ‘friends for years’ with Mr Albanese.
Asked about why he gifted Mr Albanese’s son Nathan a membership to the prestigious and exclusive
Chairman’s Lounge Mr Joyce refused to confirm or deny but talked up his relationship with the Prime Minister.
‘I’ve been good mates with Albo for some time,’
Mr Joyce said.
However, the then Qantas CEO refused to say whether he lobbied the Prime Minister
on the controversial decision to lock competitor Qatar Airways out of domestic routes.
It has since emerged in a new book about Qantas, The Chairman’s Lounge,
by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston that Ms Haydon is also
a Chairman’s Lounge member.

Mr Dutton told Sky News on Monday night it was ‘strange’ Mr Albanese had directly
contacted Mr Joyce to request upgrades while holding a regulatory position in the transport sector.
‘If you’re the Transport Minister and you’re picking up
the phone to one of the most important stakeholders in the
portfolio asking for a free upgrade, then again, I think the Prime Minister would be able to answer those questions more effectively than anyone else because I’m not aware
of anyone else having done it,’ Mr Dutton said.
It has since emerged that Ms Haydon also has membership of the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge
The Prime Minister denied frequently asking Mr Joyce for upgrades on Tuesday at press conference in the NSW city of Newcastle.
‘The only discussions that I can recall with Alan Joyce certainly were not discussed through calls – we discussed the first flight from Australia to Dubai on the A380,’ he said.
‘I’ve declared everything in accordance with all of the rules.’
Aston was asked on Monday night by ABC interviewer Sarah Ferguson about
how confident he was that Mr Albanese had made calls personally to Mr Joyce for upgrades.
‘I am very comfortable with my sourcing,’ Aston said.
Asked whether he thought Mr Albanese had been influenced by Mr Joyce’s lobbying to block UAE airline Qatar domestically
Aston said it was ‘implausible’ to think that the Prime Minister’s
office had nothing to do with the decision.

‘It’s very hard to imagine a decision of any political sensitivity in the Albanese government
that would not go through the Prime Minister’s office,’ Aston replied.
He noted the opening up of the Australian domestic market Qatar had seemingly been sailing through with Transport Minister Catherine King speaking warmly about the proposal until
‘everything changed’ to stop it dead in tracks.
Ms King repeatedly denied in parliament the decision to block Qatar was due to Qantas
lobbying her or any Labor colleagues.
Despite Mr Albanese claiming he declared every upgrade
received from Qantas the Australian Financial Review reported on Tuesday that he failed to do for his former wife Carmel Tebbutt when the two traveled together.

It’s out of our reach,’ she said.
‘Can Albanese truly be impartial when it comes to making decisions about Qantas when he’s been getting tens of thousands of dollars
worth of free upgrades to business class? The revelations puts the decision he made as transport minister and prime minister under a cloud.

Albanese took care to curate a self-image of a housing commission boy who made it.
But now the perception is cementing of a long-term pollie enjoying the perks of public office.’
Another awkward paradox of Mr Albanese’s apparent
close relationship with Mr Joyce is that the Labor leader
in a trade unionist advocate while Qantas attempted to break the power of the Transport Workers Union by sacking 1700 staff during Covid.
The sacking has since been ruled illegal by Federal Court in a case brought by the union with Qantas facing possible
hundreds of thousands in compensation payouts.
The friendship however did find one perhaps unlikely defender
in semi-retired 3AW radio star Neil Mitchell.
‘Quick test: upgrade Albo is a bad look,’ Mitchell wrote on X.
‘But does anybody believe he was seriously compromised
by having Alan Joyce as a bestie? Time to rewrite rules governing politicians.’

Carlo Ancelotti is reportedly set for crisis talks with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez following
the club’s difficult run of form.

This has led to Ancelotti coming under pressure in his role, with the legendary Italian coach facing criticism for Real’s struggles

The Spanish giants are enduring a difficult season both domestically and also in Europe
Ancelotti will meet with Real president Florentino Perez ahead of Sunday’s game against Getafe
And, according to Marca, Ancelotti is set to hold face-to-face talks
with Perez before Sunday’s LaLiga clash against Getafe at
the Bernabeu.
The report claims the pair regularly meet for discussions when Real endure a difficult run, but given the club’s worrying performances in recent times,
these talks have taken on an increased importance.
Ancelotti and Perez are set to discuss why they believe the team are struggling, while the meeting will also hint at whether the Italian still has the full backing of the club.
The report goes onto claim Real’s hierarchy feel as if Ancelotti’s
side are in their toughest period of the past five years and that Mbappe’s penalty miss against Liverpool summed up their struggles.
However, there is an admission that Ancelotti is up against it with so many injuries and a lack of depth in key positions, while
there is a feeling that more should have been done in the summer.
The likes of Vinicius Jnr, Rodrygo, David Alaba, Eder Militao,
Dani Carvajal and Aurelien Tchouameni are all currently on the sidelines, while others such
as Bellingham and Mbappe have struggled for form.
Publicly the club have pointed to the congested schedule and lack of rest as a reason for suffering so many injuries, but privately they are investigating why the squad is
struggling physically, with Real’s fitness coach Antonio Pintus coming
under fire.
However, Ancelotti continues to back his players and the report
claims the 65-year-old is up for the challenge and keen to
turn the situation around.

come in the Champions League and the beleaguered forward is
yet to hit the heights that many expected him to in the Spanish capital.
However, Ancelotti backed Mbappe after the defeat
by the Reds and claimed he knew exactly what was needed to get
him back to his best.

LUXEMBOURG, Oct 7 (Reuters) – Germany’s economic
model is not broken but Europe’s biggest economy has lost competitiveness over the
past decade, German Finance Minister Christian Lindner said on Monday.
«We can’t be satisfied with the economic developments in Germany,» he
told journalists ahead of a Eurogroup meeting.
The German economy is expected to contract by 0.2% in 2024, an economy ministry spokesperson said on Monday, cutting the
forecast from a previous projection of 0.3% growth this year.
If realised, this would be the second consecutive year of contraction for Germany’s economy,
which was the weakest among its large euro zone peers last year with
a 0.3% decline in gross domestic product.
Lindner said the government was introducing supply-side
measures to try to return the economy to growth.
«After these reforms, Germany will have more competitiveness again,» Lindner said,
adding that the growth initiative was just a first step for an economic turnaround,
«but we have to build on it.»
AMBITION NEEDED
Lindner said «ambition» was needed to keep EU public finances
in order, or to put them back in order where necessary.
«I can only encourage everyone to implement structural reforms and to make unpopular decisions,» Lindner said.
«What seems to be unpopular at the moment is the willingness to take responsibility for the next generation and for the stability of the European Union as a whole.»
Lindner said he could not comment on the French budget plans because he had not had the chance
to talk with his French colleagues yet, but he would do so on Monday
evening.
«We should all realise that the credibility of public finances vis-à-vis the capital markets is not to be trifled with,» Lindner said.
«We must credibly reduce our deficits and our debt so that we can continue to finance ourselves well and in a stable manner.»

Rubies are often referred to as the ‘king of gemstones’ and their vibrant color – caused by the presence of chromium
– is often associated with passion, love, and power.

As their race for the US presidency comes down to the wire,
each major candidate has leaned heavily on a favorite theme — abortion rights for Democrat Kamala Harris and border security for Republican Donald
Trump.
In Arizona, their ideological duel has reached a white-hot
peak, with both topics the subject of fiercely debated
ballot referendums.
And in this key southwestern state — where the billionaire Trump lost
to President Joe Biden in 2020 by a tiny margin of about
10,500 votes — every ballot truly will count.
In the mid-sized city of Tucson, hundreds of volunteers in orange T-shirts were going door-to-door to try to persuade voters to back a ballot measure to inscribe abortion rights in the
state constitution — and, while they’re at it, to vote for Vice President Harris.
To Grace Ireland, a 26-year-old activist, the abortion restrictions
imposed by several Republican-controlled states amount to «a public health crisis that Donald Trump and the Republicans have created.»
She added, «Democrats and Kamala Harris are trying to push us forward and protect women’s health care and protect our democracy and protect all people.»

Since 2022, when the US Supreme Court ended the constitutional protection of
federal abortion rights, Ireland, a registered nurse, has worked in several states where abortion is banned or severely limited.
Those restrictions have had sometimes disastrous consequences for women having problem pregnancies or carrying nonviable fetuses when doctors refuse to treat them.
«Women are going septic and dying because they cannot receive the care that they need,» she told AFP.

As Ireland carries her message to potential voters, she noted,
particularly to young people who may be less likely to vote,
that it was Donald Trump who appointed the three justices who tipped the
Supreme Court against abortion rights.

«It’s important to reiterate that Donald Trump and these abortion bans are one and the same,» Ireland said.
But in Tucson there is little unanimity among young voters.
«I do think that abortion is murder,» said Pedro Lopez, a 20-year-old college student.
«There are cases of incest or rape» that merit exceptions, he
conceded, «but that’s very small.»
He also worries about the flow of undocumented migrants that have
entered the country from Mexico during the Biden-Harris administration.
«People that are entering the United States illegally… should be sent back to where they came from,» he
said.
«My grandparents migrated from Mexico to the United States, and they did it the right way.»
So he plans not only to vote for Trump, but to back
the proposal to let local law enforcement detain,
arrest and prosecute anyone suspected of having entered the country illegally — powers normally reserved to the border police who
work for the federal government.
«I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they’re really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They’re not really able to do anything,» Lopez said.
– Mixed impact –
The major political parties see the competing referendums as offering
an opportunity to mobilize more people to vote — on ballot questions at the very
heart of the two presidential campaigns.

But the referendums may not have the clear impact on the
race for the White House that activists hope.
Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona,
with the Republican holding a very narrow lead.
Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong
support and both appear likely to pass.
So the abortion issue may not be «helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,» said Jenny Brian, a professor of bioethics at Arizona State University.
Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights and
to bring Trump back to the White House, Brian said.
Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat vs. Republican issue, the Republican Party includes «a broad spectrum of views on the topic,» an issue that also raises conservatives’ concerns
about «government interference,» she added.
The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the tougher language on the Arizona ballot question finding support not just among Trump Republicans but also «moderates and even many Democrats,» said John Kavanagh, a Republican and an Arizona state senator.
The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris’s recent toughening on migration, specifically her promise to maintain the partial closing of the
border Biden ordered in recent months.
The vice president, Kavanagh said, is «running away faster from her open-border policy than an illegal immigrant that runs away from the Border Patrol.»

the brilliant Bellamy’s. It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand, went quiet.
Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club in another Mayfair backstreet.
But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning the doors
were opened to the great unwashed.
Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit
near empty – dining room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze of a stern painting of
a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by the glare of
table lamps, indecorously bright, while a loud soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the
background. The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.
Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty,
clad in diaphanous couture. They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone.
Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.
We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur
that tastes far better than it ought to. Next door,
a large table fills with a glut of the noisily, glossily confident.
We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent charm and charisma that
had she burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’, we would have
barely blinked. Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with butter
and sour cream, are a study in tuber art. A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar, gently saline, raises them to the sublime.
Only the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous.
But there are few better dishes on earth. I’d eat this every day if I could.
But I can’t. Obviously. That’s the problem with caviar.
One taste is never enough.

Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first time author dreams of – massive
amounts of free publicity online, in newspapers and on TV and radio.
And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack on Aston over what was written in his book, The Chairman’s
Lounge – The Inside Story of how Qantas sold us out.
Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which has led to him being called ‘upgrade Albo’ – and calls for an inquiry,
Aston told Daily Mail Australia his book is ‘not a hit job on Anthony Albanese’.
Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’, but reiterated that the Prime Minister ‘had a direct line to Alan Joyce’.
The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy on Qantas flights by personally requesting them from the airline’s then CEO Mr Joyce – which
the Prime Minister has categorically denied.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese got upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and
included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu.
But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose to
shoot the messenger and, in turn, shot himself in the foot.
He said Aston was using the accusations to sell books and said he was hiding his employment history.
‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal Party staffer… I don’t see declarations he’s a former Qantas employee,’ the Prime Minister said.
But before the book even gets to the contents page there is a photo of Aston that
refers to him as the then-Qantas corporate communications senior adviser.

And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked
for then-Liberal MP Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney seat of Cook before Scott Morrison.
‘My professional history is not a secret or not
disclosed, it’s in the first line of the first page of the book,’
Aston said on Tuesday night, just before his book launch.
Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr
Albanese’s response gave the book, Aston was still ‘staggered’ at the untrue claims about him the Prime
Minister made.
‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this many times with public figures and
leaders who struggle to see their own part in it, the terrible circumstances that they
create,’ he said.

Asked if Mr Albanese had been poorly advised in his attack, Aston, who is a former Australian Financial Review columnist,
wonders if the Prime Minister ‘even listens to advice at this point’.
‘All he’s doing is talking around the issue and he’s blaming me
and he’s blaming other MP’s for also taking upgrades (on Qantas
flights).
‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t
talk about, which is, did you ask Qantas for confirmed upgrades on your
private holidays when you were the Transport Minister? The answer
is «yes» and he’s desperately trying to avoid saying it.’
Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the
Prime Minister should refer himself to the anti-corruption commission over the flight upgrades.
Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase of a $4.3million clifftop mansion while so many people are struggling to
pay their mortgage or rent, the latest blow to his credibility has
led to calls for him to resign.
Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though.
‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this part to get this far.
I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.

anyone who reads the book will learn that this book is not a hit job on Anthony Albanese.
This book is about Qantas.
‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences politicians on both sides
of the aisle, Labor, Liberal, National, you name it. They’ve been doing it for more than a
generation.
‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia.
I’m not here trying to get a scalp. That’s not what this book is about and it never was.’
But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the
conversations being had across Australia and eventually winds up back on Mr Albanese.
‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public
is with the freebie mindset of politicians,’ he said.

‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a long time
and that kind of behaviour is quite normalised to him, is what I’ve seen.
‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at
the front row of the Australian Open Tennis.
‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist
almost every year for 12 years and he was the only Prime
Minister (I saw there).
‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars
to sit in the front row of the International Grand Slam.
He’s the first Prime Minister who I’ve ever seen do that.
‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it looks like
to others when he’s on the gravy train. And I think (the claims in the book are) just another example of that.’
In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s travel to be booked in economy, then someone in their office phones the
airline and asks if their flight can be upgraded.
The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he had a very direct line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.
‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where it’s in the booking and if the seat’s empty when the flight closes, you’ll get upgraded.
‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where the ticket is converted and
you are guaranteed. You’re not going to the airport crossing your fingers going
«Geez, I hope there is a spare seat».
‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat
and the only person at Qantas who can issue those
types of upgrades is the CEO. No other executive can do that.
‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades (for Anthony
Albanese).’
Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end
of planes during his time as a travel journalist, and understands the attraction for politicians to get up there.
‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too.
Once you’ve experienced the front of the plane, it’s very hard to go back.
‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff and
they’ve got chauffeured cars and they fly in business, but they don’t get paid like CEOs …
‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford to go flying around in the front of the plane on personal travel.
‘A normal person would say «Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’
Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.
But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events.
Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.
‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

test-launch of its heated tobacco device, IQOS, in the U.S.
to the fourth quarter on Tuesday and lowered its annual forecast for
the heated tobacco business.
The pilot was earlier scheduled to run in Austin, Texas, in the second quarter, for which the company reported results on the day.
The company declined to comment on why the launch had been delayed.
Philip Morris has invested billions to promote and expand its portfolio of alternatives

device in the United States is also facing resistance from health campaigners, who have written to regulators in the country accusing the company of misrepresenting past

A ban on flavored heated tobacco in the European Union has already hit shipments this year, with Philip Morris saying the
