Uno de los problemas más graves en la sociedad americana moderna es la GULA. ¿Qué es la «GULA”? Una definición concisa y práctica de la gula es: «un apetito desordenado de comer y beber».
Aquí la pregunta clave es: «¿vives para comer o comes para vivir?” Si vives sólo para comer, entonces eres «un Glotón». San Pablo lo describe como «¡el Dios del estómago»! Pero, si es así, que comes para vivir, entonces practicas una de las cuatro virtudes cardinales llamada «Templanza».
Los gimnasios, las dietas, recetas especiales, hasta operaciones caras han sido diseñadas para ayudar a las personas con sobrepeso, debido a la glotonería, para perder esas libras y promover una vida más saludable.
RAZONES DETRÁS DEL VICIO DE LA GULA
1. PECADO ORIGINAL. A consecuencia del Pecado Original heredado de Adán y Eva, hay un desorden en el corazón humano y uno de éstos es la gula — el deseo de comer o beber demasiado. Nota interesante: El Pecado Original de Adán y Eva era desobediencia pero también la gula — ellos comieron lo que no deberían haber comido.
2. CARACTERÍSTICA DE FAMILIA. Con frecuencia padres que carecen autodominio en sus hábitos alimentarios, transmiten esta mala costumbre a sus hijos. El no tener horas fijas de comer, siempre comer fuera, tener una mala dieta–todo esto contribuye a malos hábitos alimentarios y a la gula, ¡transmitiendolo a los hijos!
3. SOCIEDAD DE ABUNDANCIA. En la mayor parte del mundo, la comida es realmente una escasez. Muchos niños mueren de hambre cada día —alrededor de 4,000 de acuerdo a la estadística moderna. Pero no es tal la situación en Estados Unidos. Igualmente, un problema perenne de los padres es de cada semana tirar comida vieja. Lo que en Estados Unidos se tira a la basura con mucho gusto se bendiciría y comería.
4. ¡LA GULA PROMOVIDA! En combinación con la abundancia de comida, se promueve el comer en exceso. «It’s Miller time!” (“¡Tiempo para cerveza Miller!”), «¡Te mereces un descanso hoy en Macdonald’s!», “ Buffet Chino: $5.99— ¡Coma todo lo que pueda!” “¡Compra dos pizzas, recibe una gratis!” Con todos estos anuncios y promociones, ¡no es fácil contrarrestar la tentación de la gula!
5. ESTRÉS: LA LEY DE COMPENSACIÓN. Muchos comen en exceso debido al estrés de la vida moderna. La tensión, plazos que realizar, congestión vehicular, problemas económicos, pleitos familiares, preocupaciones sobre el futuro— une todos estos problemas y como escape temporal de estos problemas: ¿por qué no buscar refugio en el «placer del paladar?». ¡Vamos al buffet chino— buffet libre: $4.99!
6. ¡INTERIOR VACÍO! Una razón espiritual de la gula es lo siguiente: ¡la realidad de un interior vacío, un sentimiento interior de fracaso! San Augustín lo expresó en este refrán inmortal: “O Señor has hecho nuestros corazones para Ti, y nuestros corazones están inquietos hasta que descansen en Ti.” (Confesiones). ¡En otras palabras, nuestros corazones tienen un agujero! ¡Aquel agujero puede estar lleno de la mugre moral (pecado) o puede estar lleno de de la riqueza espiritual—Dios y Su abundante gracia! ¡Es uno o el otro! El Doctor Angélico, Santo Tomás de Aquino, lo expresó así — “¡Buscamos a Dios verdadero en Jesucristo o buscaremos al dios falso de la criatura — el placer!”
REMEDIO PARA SUPERAR EL VICIO DE LA GULA
En primer lugar, nunca debemos desesperar debido a nuestra miseria humana. En efecto somos el epítome de debilidad; sin embargo, Dios es la esencia de poder y fuerza. ¡Uno de Sus atributos es el de la OMNIPOTENCIA—Dios es todopoderoso! “Nuestra ayuda está en el nombre del Señor que hizo el cielo y la tierra.” Dios puede mover montañas y Él puede ayudarnos a vencer cualquier vicio, y esto incluye la Gula. He aquí algunas sugerencias concretas:

En español hay un dicho, ¡»No hay peor ciego que aquel que no quiere ver; no hay peor sordo que aquel que no quiere oír!» Los gulosos deben admitirlo: «¡COMO DEMASIADO!!!» o «¡COMO LO QUÉ ME HACE DAÑO!” ¡Sanación puede comenzar una vez que admitimos que tenemos un problema!
2. ¡CONFESARLO! La gracia sacramental específica de la Confesión es la de sanación. El pecado hiere nuestra alma; Jesús nos sana pero más específicamente a través del Sacramento de la Confesión. “Por Sus llagas somos sanados.”
3. ESTRATEGIA: ¡PLAN DE ACCIÓN! ¡San Ignacio nos ofrece una estrategia! Antes de sentarse a comer, decida lo que usted comerá. Luego, y esto es lo más difícil: ¡levantese de la mesa con un poco de apetito! ¡Ah! Generalmente nos levantamos, con el estómago muy lleno y habiendo comido demasiado. ¡Esto se conoce como conquista en la batalla espiritual!
4. ¡IMAGINAR LA SAGRADA FAMILIA! Otra sugerencia potente cuando estés comiendo, es imaginar que estás sentado a la mesa con la Sagrada Familia, Jesús, María y San José. Contempla una comida típica de la familia más santa que todas, comiendo y compartiendo juntos. En ingles, hay un dicho: «Aves de una bandada andan juntos.» Y “Dime con quién andas y te diré quien eres». Las buena costumbres, la cortesía, el autocontrol, la caridad exquisita de Jesús, María y José nos enseñará la importancia de comer no sólo para satisfacer nuestras papilas y deseos terrenales, sino para ser conscientes de que nuestro cuerpo es templo del Espíritu Santo y debe ser respetado como tal, así como nuestro cuerpo está destinado para la gloria eterna.
5. ¡LA RAZÓN SOBRE LA PASIÓN! En momentos de tensión y pasión, cuando estas a punto de comer, ruega por la gracia no simplemente seguir la pasión y el deseo; sino de poder dominar los impulsos y dar lugar a la razón. La razón nos enseña que el proposito de la comida es para alimentarnos y fortalecernos y de esta forma poder realizar nuestros deberes diarios. “¡Lo que la gasolina es para el tanque del carro; eso es la comida para el estómago!”
6. ¡HAMBRE Y SED PARA LA VERDADERA COMIDA! ¡Cultiva el hambre para el mejor de los alimentos—Jesús el Pan de Vida! De hecho, por qué no tratar de asistir diariamente a Misa, recibir la Sagrada Comunión frecuentemente —incluso si es posible, cada día. Si nuestra hambre y sed por Jesús en comer y beber Su Cuerpo y Sangre son intensas, entonces Jesús en efecto nos ayudará a “ordenar el desorden”, en todas formas, ¡pero específicamente en el uso adecuado de alimentos y bebidas! Roguemos a María, quien nos dio a Jesús, el “Pan de Vida”, que podamos lograr autocontrol y buscar las realidades eternas y perennes: ¡el Pan de la Palabra de Dios y el Pan de Vida en la Sagrada Comunión!
